The fourth volume in McDonald''s Canberra series tells the story of the creation of a national capital in a quiet corner of country NSW. There are glimmers of a grand vision conceived by the six ex-colonies for their capital in the wake of federation, as a means of helping define the new nation itself. But the path was often diverted by jurisdictional jealousies, which bled into the painful processes of site selection and the choice of a design. The treatment of Walter and Marion Griffin, and the dilution of their plan, is a tragedy, which still polarises opinions today. There are some disconcerting truths revealed. The capital was conceived within the context of the White Australia Policy. Despite the pomp of the opening celebrations of the provisional Parliament House, McDonald shows how the fractures within Australian society came to the fore: in race, religion, and class. It was not the rose-coloured spectacle that is so often portrayed. Nothing evinces this so clearly as the brave sovereignty protest of Nangar and Ooloogan on that day in May 1927. Canberra IV also relays the carnage of the land resumptions. There were attempts to socially engineer a utopian model and to win over the city''s disenfranchised residents. But if anything galvanised the population against the bureaucracy, it was prohibition. Canberra asserted itself in the late 1920s. Its community did not just emerge from the cosy cottages of a transplanted Public Service. It evolved from a mix of elements including the workers'' camps, the rump of the original pastoral communities, and the new commercial sector. Canberra IV also looks at how the city''s development stalled during WWI, ramped up again in the 1920s, but was dampened again by the Great Depression and, of course, another World War. The builders of Canberra never really had a clear run. The book also covers the demise of the old villages. And, of course, the impact on neighbouring Queanbeyan, was profound, with that town changing in ways unimaginable at the turn of the century and, along the way, endured shabby treatment from the FCT administrations.

This is the first volume of the first major history of the Canberra-Queanbeyan district since the three-volume set by Gillespie, Gibbney and Sparke, in 1988-1991. McDonald begins with the district''s ''prehistory'', considering what Canberra life was like before 1788. He examines how the landscape evolved into its recognisable form by the end of the Ice Age and considers possible evidence of the first ancient footprints - perhaps other hominins - 130,000 years ago. The volume discusses how Aboriginal occupation was concentrated at campsites along the waterways, especially during the temperate months and in the alpine areas in winter and during the moth hunting season at mid-summer. Agriculture, aquaculture, and hunting methods are examined, including fire-stick farming. Local religious practices and views on the afterlife are also considered as well as the nature and structure of the different local Aboriginal bands in the 1820s and beyond. McDonald also includes new research on the first British expeditions to Canberra and their use of Aboriginal expertise. The most confronting chapter of this volume deals with the invasion. In Canberra it used to be claimed that there was no resistance. McDonald debunks this myth, showing that the impact was genocidal. There are also detailed appendices. One covers the etymology of local names, particularly the toponym, ''Canberra''. Another provides the first ever historiography of the Canberra district. There are 16 maps, 14 tables, several biographies, and illustrative figures.

In 2006, I was told by a spirit guide that I would write a book. Yes, I see spirits. “That sounds good but what story had I to tell? My guidance came from two sources; spirit and dreams. My childhood had been a ‘lie’ and I came to realise that much of my adult life was a ‘lie’ also. I wasn’t quite the person that I thought I was. During my childhood I had been the victim of abuse from an adult who I trusted. Unfortunately, I continued with this habit as an adult and would have difficulty facing up to anything. I had two options: run, as I had been doing, or face the truth about myself. I opted for the latter. Today I do not acknowledge negativity. I learn from every experience and think positively. It does help somewhat when the guidance that I receive is ‘out of this world!’

In the late 2010s, the United States experienced a period of widespread silencing. Protests of unsafe drinking water have been met with tear gas; national park employees, environmentalists, and scientists have been ordered to stop communicating publicly. Advocates for gun control are silenced even as mass shootings continue. Rather, living feminist politics requires individual interpretation and struggle, collective discussion and disagreement, and recognizing difference among women as well as points of convergence in feminist struggle. Badass Feminist Politics includes a diverse range of engaging feminist political projects to not only analyze the work being done on the ground but provide an overview for action that can be taken on by those seeking to engage in feminist activism in their own communities. Contributors included here are working for equality and equity and resisting violent, racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, and sexist language and action during this tension-filled political moment. "This series of experiments used the multiple learning and memory systems hypothesis of the mammalian nervous system to investigate the possibility that the amygdala, dorsal striatum, and hippocampal systems might, in certain situations, interact to produce behavior in the normal animal. Using variations of the conditioned-cue preference (CCP) task, evidence is presented showing that context-specific information acquired by the hippocampus interferes with acquisition of amygdala-based stimulus-reward learning. It was also demonstrated that there are amygdala-, dorsal striatum-, and hippocampus-based forms of place learning and that cue ambiguity and movement are important factors determining which of these learning and memory systems gain behavioral control in place learning situations. These findings provide evidence for interactions among learning and memory systems and implicate the amygdala and dorsal striatum in some types of non-hippocampal based place learning using distal cues." --
