The Missionary Mind and American East Asia Policy, 1911–1915

release date: Mar 17, 2020
The Missionary Mind and American East Asia Policy, 1911–1915
At a telling moment in the development of American East Asia policy, the dream of a Christian China, made vivid by the utterances of returned missionaries, fired the imagination of the general public, influenced opinion leaders and policymakers, and furthered the Open Door doctrine. Missionary-inspired enthusiasm for China ran parallel to the different attitude of the American business community, which viewed Japan as the more appropriate focus of American interest in East Asia. During the five years here examined, the religious mentality proved stronger than the commercial mentality in influencing American policy toward the Chinese Republican Revolution and the Twenty-one Demands of 1915. James Reed’s treatment of the struggle between William Jennings Bryan and Robert Lansing over the Japanese demands in China is detailed and penetrating. This book builds on the work of Akira Iriye, Michael Hunt, Ernest May, and others in its analysis of cultural attitudes, business affairs, and the mindset of the foreign policy elites. Its thesis—that the Protestant missionary movement profoundly shaped the course of our historical relations with East Asia—will interest both specialists and general readers.

Parents as Talent Developers

release date: Dec 19, 2016
Parents as Talent Developers
Our purpose in writing this book is to give minority parents (African American, Latino) the tools they need to help their children perform much better in school. The content of the book comes from discovering actual parental practices used by minority families whose children excel at school. Our research teams went to public schools in minority neighborhoods in New York City and Long Island to find high-achieving minority children. We then visited their families and interviewed the parents and children separately to uncover what the parents did to warrant such high achievement. It is these minority parents who are the instructors in this book. We have talked with them, wrote down their stories, and extracted the parental practices that we call kernels. Kernels are seeds in the plant world. The kernels on an ear of corn are the seeds needed to grow the next generation of corn. We use this term in the sense that each parental practice that we highlight in this book should be viewed as a seed for a childs academic growth. Our research teams highlight ninety-six kernels and embed many more practices in the text that bolster academic achievement. It is a resource that minority parents can use to give their children the opportunities that result from an emphasis on academics. The book is also designed for educators to use in their everyday interactions with minority and nonminority parents.

From global complexity to local reality: Aligning implementation pathways for the Sustainable Development Goals and landscape approaches
The Global Landscapes Forums held in Warsaw (November 2013) and Lima (December 2014), coupled with the CGIAR Development Dialogues (New York, September 2014), have helped position ‘landscape approaches’ at the center of sustainable development initiatives and global discourse. The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and its many partners continue to devise ways to best introduce a holistic and integrated ‘landscapes’ approach to balance trade-offs between conservation and development, including agriculture, with the aim of influencing both policy and practice.

To what extent does the presence of forests and trees contribute to food production in humid and dry forest landscapes?

release date: Feb 23, 2015
To what extent does the presence of forests and trees contribute to food production in humid and dry forest landscapes?
This review assesses the strength of the evidence that reports how forests and trees contribute to agricultural (food) production in order to prioritize further research for better decision-making. The search strategy employs terms from studies on forests, agroforestry, ecosystem services and agriculture across a range of bibliographic databases, internet and specialist search engines and an open call for gray literature. Retrieved articles will be screened by title, abstract and full text and inclusion/exclusion exercise will generate the final list of studies. Data from these studies will be extracted using a coding tool. Due to anticipated heterogeneity in the retrieved data, we will group findings into appropriate categories as an initial presentation of the data. Sub group meta-analysis by types of ecosystem services and other appropriate predictors will be conducted to show the positive or negative effects of forests and trees on food production. We consider there may be significant gaps in the literature with regard to: 1) Which ecosystem services are provided by forests and trees within a landscape; 2) Over what spatial scales are these services transferred, and; 3) To what extent are these services ultimately translated to increased food production?

The Birth Control Movement and American Society

Originally published in 1984. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. The Heart's Events
The letters collected here comprise an important chapter in the life of Walter Pater's literary career. They record in great detail the relations between this Victorian man of letters and his publisher, Macmillan and Co. Specifically they illustrate how such discussions affected the form as well as the content of his books. The book provides a very full illustration and analysis of the crucial influence of the author-publisher relationship to literature.

Put Your Mindset to Work

Put Your Mindset to Work
The right mindset can make you three times more likely to get the job you want-and even less likely to lose it later. What does it take to get and keep the job you want? Ninety-six percent of employers argue that it''s not just about having the right skills for the position- it''s all about the right mindset. As two leading experts on the subject, Reed and Stoltz know what employers really want from the people they hire and keep. According to their extensive and globally acclaimed research, there is a specific set of mental traits that will make you exponentially more desirable to potential employers, and more likely to succeed and enjoy your job once you''re hired. This "3G Mindset" is: ? Global-the openness and big-picture perspective to compete on a global scale in any job ? Good-a positive force with an unwavering moral compass ? Grit-the tenacity and resilience to thrive on adversity The authors reveal why employers are three times more likely to hire people with the right mindset over those who are more qualified on paper. This book provides an actionable approach for both assessing and developing these essential traits.

Thomas Mann

release date: Jan 01, 1996
Thomas Mann
T.J. Reed's study has long established itself as the standard work in English on Thomas mann, and offers as comprehensive a view of Mann's fiction and thought as is available in any language. It is based on a coherent close reading of Mann's oeuvre, literary and political, and also onmanuscripts and sources, and was part of the first phase of literary scholarship that opened up the resources of the Zurich Thomas Mann Archive. Further documents that have appeared since then - Mann's diaries, notebooks, and other correspondences - have not fundamentally altered the individualinterpretations or the overall picture the study offers, and in some respects have emphatically confirmed them. A further chapter added to this edition covers the new documentation, gives a vigorous account of the main curents in Mann scholarship and criticism over the last two decades suggestinghow we should now see the writer, the man, and the political figure, and above all the complex relationship between the three.

The Border Ballads

The Border Ballads
The Border ballads are the creation of a medieval frontier community who were Borderers before they were Scots or English and whose first allegiance was to the kinship group, the Surname. In this study, James Reed discusses the ballads within their geographical and historical environment as the unique record of a people tenuously surviving in a world of poverty, violence and superstition, yet singing down the centuries their strange and melancholy tales of love and hate and longing, of thieving and killing, of jealousy, incest, witchcraft and revenge.
