Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
"Northanger Abbey" by Jane Austen is a novel written in the early 19th century. The story introduces Catherine Morland, a young woman whose unremarkable upbringing and lack of traditional beauty set her apart from the stereotypical hero-lines of romantic fiction. However, Catherine harbors a longing for adventure and the romantic ideals perpetuated by the novels she devours, which foreshadows her journey into society, particularly as she embarks on a trip to Bath. The opening of the novel sets the stage for Catherine''s character development and introduces her mundane life contrasted with her fantastical aspirations. From early childhood, it is clear that Catherine is more inclined towards physical activities than traditional feminine pastimes, a trait that persists into her teenage years as she develops a fascination for the very novels that shape her romantic notions. Her first significant adventure begins when she is invited to Bath, where she hopes to find excitement, friendship, and possibly romance, particularly with Mr. Tilney, a character that stirs her interest. The narrative promises a witty exploration of societal norms, personal growth, and the dissonance between one''s reality and their expectations, making it an engaging read for those interested in character-driven stories that satirize romantic tropes.

Sense and Sensibility (Jane Austen Collection)
For Elinor Dashwood, sensible and sensitive, and her romantic, impetuous younger sister Marianne, the prospect of marrying the men they love appears remote. In a world ruled by money and self-interest, the Dashwood sisters have neither fortune nor connections. Concerned for others and for social proprieties, Elinor is ill-equipped to compete with self-centered fortune-hunters like Lucy Steele, while Marianne''s unswerving belief in the truth of her own feelings makes her more dangerously susceptible to the designs of unscrupulous men.

Persuasion By Jane Austen (Fictional & Romantic Novel) "The Complete Unabridged & Annotated Version"
Persuasion is the last novel fully completed by Jane Austen. It was published at the end of 1817, six months after her death. The story concerns Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of 27 years, whose family is moving to lower their expenses and get out of debt, at the same time as the wars come to an end, putting sailors on shore. They rent their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife''s brother, Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth, had been engaged to Anne in 1806, and now they meet again, both single and unattached, after no contact in more than seven years. This sets the scene for many humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne Elliot in her second "bloom".The novel was well-received in the early 19th century. Greater fame came later in the century, continued in the 20th century, and through to the 21st century. Much scholarly debate on Austen''s work has since been published. Anne Elliot is noteworthy among Jane Austen''s heroines for her relative maturity. As Persuasion is Austen''s last completed novel, it is accepted as her most maturely written novel showing a refinement of literary conception indicative of a woman approaching forty years of age. Unlike Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, the novel Persuasion was not rewritten from earlier drafts of novels which Austen had originally started before 1800. Her use of free indirect discourse in narrative was by 1816 fully developed and in full evidence. The first edition of Persuasion was co-published with the previously unpublished Northanger Abbey, written in 1803; later editions of both were published separately.Popular acceptance of the novel was reflected by two notable made-for-television filmed adaptations released first in Britain: Amanda Root starred in the lead role in the 1995 version co-starring Ciarán Hinds, and was followed by Sally Hawkins in the 2007 version made for ITV1 co-starring Rupert Penry-Jones.

This story--which is, of course, a skit on the "terror" novel of Mrs. Radcliffe''s school--was not published till after its author''s death, when, in 1818, it was bound up with her last book, "Persuasion."
