release date: Oct 24, 2018
Changing Ideas about Women in the United States, 1776-1825
Written in 1954 and published in 1981, this fascinating study remains authoritative as an account of a body of opinion about women’s nature and role that was in vogue in America during the first half-century after independence. Combining intellectual and social history, this work was one of numerous attempts being made at the time to add depth to American social history dealing with women and women’s experiences before feminism. The author explores British sources of American thought as well, presenting an early comparative history, and offers a focus on religion to show how processes of change to ideas about women occurred.

Diasporas, Cultures of Mobilities, ‘Race’ 1

release date: Nov 25, 2016
Diasporas, Cultures of Mobilities, ‘Race’ 1
This volume examines the evolution of the concept of diaspora since the advent of Diaspora Studies in the 90s, specifically vis-à-vis other concepts: transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, creolization. The essays depict the discontinuities of diasporic experience, but also its ongoing negotiations. Building on transatlantic, gender studies and queer theory, they address the theoretical turn when sexual difference is taken into account and gender troubled. Allying theory and case studies, covering diasporas as diverse as the African, Caribbean, Palestinian, South and South-East Asian diasporas, the dispersion of Romas, the spaces of the Indian Ocean, South Africa and New Zealand, this volume promotes another diasporic model: multidirectional, plural and global. It finds in literature and film tools to think the ‘super-diversity’ and the contradictions of our global world.

Severn and the Day She Silenced the World
Severn Suzuki''s speech at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio caught the attention of the world. As the daughter of environmentalist David Suzuki, Severn''s concern for the environment was fueled by a trip to the Amazon rainforest at age nine. Back home in Vancouver, she and her friends started ECO, the Environmental Children''s Organization, combining their efforts to raise enough money to travel to Rio. They couldn''t have imagined the effect they would have on the adults gathered there. More than twenty years later, Severn''s speech continues to receive thousands of hits on YouTube. Severn''s story is about the power that children have to create change when they work together, and how their voices can stand out above the politics and cynicism of adults.
