The War Against Dummy Math: How Seven School Districts Changed U. S. Education by Embracing Algebra for All
This is the story of a few inspired individuals who challenged the conventional wisdom of their day by insisting that all ninth graders can and should take Algebra I - including minorities often put in "Dummy Math" courses.Jay Mathews, one of the nation''s leading education journalists, describes the uphill struggle of a few determined individuals who created the Equity 2000 Project - a national effort to demonstrate the advantages of having every ninth grader take Algebra I. Investigation of Light Absorption and Emission in Ge and GeSn Films Grown on Si Substrates

Investigation of Light Absorption and Emission in Ge and GeSn Films Grown on Si Substrates
Room temperature photoluminescence was observed from GeSn films with Sn content up to 4 %. The peak wavelength of the emission was found to shift to lower energies with increasing Sn content, corresponding to the decrease in the direct band gap E0 of the material. An additional peak in the spectrum was assigned to the indirect band gap. The separation between the direct and indirect peaks was found to decrease with increasing Sn concentration, as expected. Electroluminescence was also observed from Ge/Si and Ge0.98Sn0.02 photodiodes under forward bias, and the luminescence spectra were found to match well with the observed photoluminescence spectra. A theoretical expression was developed for the luminescence due to the direct band gap and fit to the data.

Work Hard. Be Nice.

release date: Jan 20, 2009
Work Hard. Be Nice.
When Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin signed up for Teach for America right after college and found themselves utter failures in the classroom, they vowed to remake themselves into superior educators. They did that—and more. In their early twenties, by sheer force of talent and determination never to take no for an answer, they created a wildly successful fifth-grade experience that would grow into the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP), which today includes sixty-six schools in nineteen states and the District of Columbia. KIPP schools incorporate what Feinberg and Levin learned from America''s best, most charismatic teachers: lessons need to be lively; school days need to be longer (the KIPP day is nine and a half hours); the completion of homework has to be sacrosanct (KIPP teachers are available by telephone day and night). Chants, songs, and slogans such as "Work hard, be nice" energize the program. Illuminating the ups and downs of the KIPP founders and their students, Mathews gives us something quite rare: a hopeful book about education.

Supertest
Recognized by universities throughout the world, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a college entrance examination that students can take in any country. A school that adopts the IB curriculum ensures that its academics are brought up to international standards. Over 500 U.S. high schools currently participate in the International Baccalaureate program. As the IB concept gains ground with students, parents, and teachers in North America, Supertest tells two illuminating stories: how the IB program came to be and eventually reached the United States, and how it came to be implemented at Mount Vernon High in Alexandria, VA. The book provides insight into how ideas first conceived by a small group of educators in Switzerland eventually helped improve a typical American public school.
