The Black Widow

release date: Aug 13, 2024
The Black Widow
A candid and moving autobiography by the ''Black Widow'' of billiards Jeanette Lee was 18 years old when she walked into a New York City pool hall and became enamored by the elegant geometry of the game. Before long, she was an unmistakable figure on the international competition circuit, dressed head-to-toe in black, stalking the billiards table and gazing down her cue as if tracking her prey. In this new memoir, the woman nicknamed ''The Black Widow'' opens up about her legendary career and the rich, unpredictable life she''s woven around it. Lee details her upbringing in a Korean-American household in Brooklyn, her single-minded drive to reach the pinnacle of her sport, and her unlikely entry into the realm of mainstream celebrity in an era where female athletes rarely got their share of the limelight. Lee also reflects on her lifelong struggle with scoliosis, which necessitated over twenty operations during her playing career; her public battle with Stage 4 ovarian cancer; and the communities that gave her strength throughout. Written with warmth and candor, this is the definitive story of a true icon.

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • An inspiring and intimate self-portrait of the champion of equality that encompasses her brilliant tennis career, unwavering activism, and an ongoing commitment to fairness and social justice. “A story about the personal strength, immense growth, and undeniable greatness of one woman who fearlessly stood up to a culture trying to break her down.”—Serena Williams In this spirited account, Billie Jean King details her life''s journey to find her true self. She recounts her groundbreaking tennis career—six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, twenty Wimbledon championships, thirty-nine grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes." She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women''s movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement. She describes the myriad challenges she''s hurdled—entrenched sexism, an eating disorder, near financial peril after being outed—on her path to publicly and unequivocally acknowledging her sexual identity at the age of fifty-one. She talks about how her life today remains one of indefatigable service. She offers insights and advice on leadership, business, activism, sports, politics, marriage equality, parenting, sexuality, and love. And she shows how living honestly and openly has had a transformative effect on her relationships and happiness. Hers is the story of a pathbreaking feminist, a world-class athlete, and an indomitable spirit whose impact has transcended even her spectacular achievements in sports.

Investigation of Binder Rheology and Performance Outcomes of Recycled Hot-mix Asphalt Using Different Rejuvenation Agents

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Investigation of Binder Rheology and Performance Outcomes of Recycled Hot-mix Asphalt Using Different Rejuvenation Agents
The research presented in this thesis investigated the effect of various rejuvenation agents on the performance of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) surfacing mixes containing high levels of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) material (30%). The research aimed to develop testing methodologies for evaluating the mechanical performance properties of HMA mixes and for the characterisation of extracted binder properties. The methodologies were used determine the effects of various rejuvenators on the mechanical performance properties and binder properties fundamental to the long-term performance of pavement surfaces. A testing methodology was developed to investigate the performance properties of five HMA mixes including four mixes that were rejuvenated using different rejuvenation agents and one control. The mechanical testing methodology provided a comprehensive assessment of mix properties that are fundamental to the long-term performance of recycled pavements. A methodology for the characterisation of extracted binders was developed to evaluate properties that had a significant effect on the performance of the binder and therefore the overall mix. The binder properties were compared to results obtained from mechanical performance tests to establish a relationship between binder rejuvenation and performance observations. The results obtained from mechanical testing demonstrated that the cracking resistance of recycled mixes could be significantly improved through the use of rejuvenation agents. Rejuvenation also decreased the stiffness of the mix and had a negative effect on the resistance of a mix to permanent deformation. From the characterisation of the binder, it was found that rejuvenation agents altered the rheological properties of the binder but did not have a notable effect on chemical composition. The rheological performance parameters of the binder correlated to the mix performance observed from mechanical tests. Overall this research has shown that rejuvenation agents can be utilised to enhance the performance of recycled mixes by restoring binder properties.

Let's Get Steppin! Saving the Next Generation..Pedometer Walking

release date: May 01, 2011
Let's Get Steppin! Saving the Next Generation..Pedometer Walking
Inspired by the "The Big Challenge" series that aired in 2007 on kids and obesity, and the Surgeon General''s report that advocates obesity is more prevalent and pervasive among Blacks and Hispanics; King presented a pedometer challenge to her granddaughter in 2008, who was 8 years old at the time. Notable results were observed. Her desire for outside activities increased immensely. Attempting to reach her daily goal of 12k steps became additive. The pedometer was viewed more as a game, than a tracking tool. King shares frankly concerning her and her families battle with obesity and the associated complications of Type II diabetics, heart disease, sleep apnea, kidney failure, and hypertension to name a few. As a writer, author, she tells her irrefutable testimony of how she attributes the aid of pedometer walking and alternative food selections to her being able to ward off Type II Diabetes thus far. In an eye opening and thought provoking approach; she highlights the impact of the church and its unconscious role on how it contributes toward the advancement of obesity. She also spotlights manufacturers in their supportive and not so supportive efforts. "The church in a good conscious state can''t be guilty of creating an opportunity and an environment for the very thing that they preach and teach against, [temptation."] "I tussled with the idea of holding off publishing this book until I''d attained my desired weight goal; I figured that it would be received or recognized as being a more effective or proven mechanism. You know... after the victory. Then I was reminded that it''s during the struggles of life is when encouragement, comfort, and strength is needed the most, whether you''re the one that''s receiving it or giving it."[Excerpt from Introduction.] Wonderfully illustrated in colorful photo''s of food, charts, graphs and alternative food recipes. "Let''s Get Steppin!" offers an innovative, identifiable and plain talk method to a targeted segment of America concerning the debilitating disease of Obesity. It''s non-clinical, yet, in a clinical approach, it promotes self awareness along with her proven principles to assist in tackling the war on obesity. If you or your family members are toiling with the "generational curse" of obesity and its related complications as King confesses...this book will leave you hopeful!...

Contested Place: Religion and Values in the Dispute, Burnt Church/Esgenoopetitj, New Brunswick

Contested Place: Religion and Values in the Dispute, Burnt Church/Esgenoopetitj, New Brunswick
Residents of the two communities of Burnt Church, Mi''kmaq and English, both argue that understanding the dispute requires understanding the place in which it occurred. The philosophical articulation of place suggests that place is the necessary ground of existence, and the way in which people and landscapes inscribe themselves on one another over time (Casey 1993, Malpas 1999, Stefanovic 2000). Religion and values shape sense of place in Burnt Church/Esgenoopetitj both historically and culturally; further, people''s senses of place are themselves profoundly religious, as sense of place binds together communal social identity. Exploration of this place-based understanding of the dispute, and its history, raises the importance of native and non-native rights, sovereignty, nationalism, and conservation as values articulated in the dispute, and socially and religiously negotiated during and after the conflict. The dissertation concludes with a brief examination of the importance of non-local senses of place in the dispute, such as those of the Canadian government and Canadian activists. Resolution of conflicts such as the dispute in Burnt Church/Esgenoopetitj asks for more than simply negotiating the presenting issue, whether that issue is fishery access, forestry, or land rights; resolution requires attending to the implicit values and senses of place of both aboriginal people and settler communities.

Human Blood Cells
This important book uses selected molecules expressed on erythrocytes, lymphocytes, platelets and granulocytes to illustrate how genetic polymorphisms and variations in these molecules can affect their structure and function in mature human blood cells. The examples described tend to have a clinical association. Human blood group antigens and HLA antigens are classic examples of genetic polymorphism and they are important in blood transfusion and organ transplantation, respectively. In common with the blood group antigens, the polymorphic and variant antigens on platelets and granulocytes can be targets for antibodies in feto-maternal antigen incompatibility and transfusion reactions. Certain inherited haemolytic anaemias can be attributed to some of the polymorphic and variant forms of erythrocyte anion transport protein, spectrin, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase which exhibit abnormal structural or functional properties. Similarly, the study of cytokine gene polymorphism can provide a further understanding of the immune/inflammatory diseases and allogeneic transplantation.
