The Value of CopyworkThe work of transcribing acts upon the child''s mind and body, developing both the powers of the mind and hand. By taking careful note of where to place a capital letter, comma, period, or other punctua-tion mark, the child is absorbing grammatical laws that are naturally reproduced when he writes from his own knowledge. Spelling is also trained through transcribing. In fact, copywork is a child''s introduction to spelling. Children are encouraged to look at the word, see a picture of it with their eyes shut, and then write the word from memory.The earliest practice in writing for children of seven or eight should be done through copywork. This activity should only and always be a slow, careful, and precise work. It should never be rushed.
