I Tidig musik har Jeffrey Eugenides samlat noveller som han skrivit sedan slutet av åttiotalet och många av dem handlar om själsligt självskadebeteende. Få samtida författare skriver lika träffsäkert om företrädesvis välutbildade män och kvinnor ur medelklassen vars liv sakta men säkert börjat rämna. De har sunkiga kök och sömnproblem, deras karriärer har gått i stå och hustaken läcker. Eugenides är särskilt intresserad av männen, av att tränga sig in i de mörka och outtalade inre tankarna hos äkta män och fäder. Till exempel är Charlie, som han gärna medger i "Hitta skurken", "bristfällig make" till en kvinna som bara gifte sig med honom för att få uppehållstillstånd. För sent kommer han underfund med vad som är nyckeln till en god relation. "Vid frukosten skickar man marmeladen. Man frågar: ́Hur har du haft det idag? ́ och låtsas bry sig. Såna grejer funkar verkligen." Samlingen rymmer tio noveller. Den tidigaste, "Otämjda trädgårdar", skrevs 1988, alltså fem år innan debutromanen Dödens Jungfrur gavs ut. De senaste texterna är daterade 2017.

Da ist ein Familienvater, der im Garten an der Feuerstelle sitzt und auf sein Haus schaut, das er nach einem Seitensprung nicht mehr betreten darf. Da ist ein junges Mädchen, das von den indischen Eltern an einen Unbekannten verheiratet werden soll; um dem zu entgehen, verführt sie einen Mann, der nicht weiß, dass sie noch minderjährig ist, und wirft ihn dadurch aus der Bahn. Da ist ein Lektor, der viel arbeitet und trotzdem so wenig verdient, dass seine beiden Kinder oft woanders übernachten müssen, weil zu Hause das Geld fürs Heizen fehlt; also beschließt er, sich das dringend Benötigte selbst zu beschaffen, und veruntreut das Vermögen seines Chefs. Da ist die 88-jährige Della, die mit einer Demenz-Diagnose in ein Pflegeheim kommt; ihre langjährige Freundin entführt sie trotz Schneesturm-Warnung in ein abgelegenes Haus. Und schließlich ist da noch die junge Frau, die sich per Bratenspritze ihren Kinderwunsch erfüllen will. Verkappte Romane oder doch eher nicht? Jeffrey Eugenides, der "Epiker" unter den amerikanischen Romanautoren, ist auch ein Meister der kleineren Form – das zeigen diese virtuos komponierten und mit großer Menschenkenntnis erzählten Geschichten.
