Ash’s Cabin

release date: Aug 13, 2024
Ash’s Cabin
Ash has always felt alone. Adults ignore the climate crisis. Other kids Ash’s age are more interested in pop stars and popularity contests than in fighting for change. Even Ash’s family seems to be sleepwalking through life. The only person who ever seemed to get Ash was their Grandpa Edwin. Before he died, he used to talk about building a secret cabin, deep in the California wilderness. Did he ever build it? What if it’s still there, waiting for him to come back...or for Ash to find it? To Ash, that maybe-mythical cabin is starting to feel like the perfect place for a fresh start and an escape from the miserable feeling of alienation that haunts their daily life. But making the wilds your home isn’t easy. And as much as Ash wants to be alone...can they really be happy alone? Can they survive alone? From New York Times–bestselling author and illustrator Jen Wang comes a singularly affecting story about self-discovery, self-reliance, and the choice to live when it feels like you have no place in the world.

Taiwan and the Changing Dynamics of Sino-US Relations

release date: Feb 06, 2022
Taiwan and the Changing Dynamics of Sino-US Relations
Wang discusses the dynamics of Sino–US relations since 2008 and the implications for relations between Taiwan and both the United States and the People’s Republic of China. Ever since China surpassed Japan to become the world’s second largest economy, it has appeared to shift its policy shift from “biding our time” and a self-described “peaceful rise” toward increased assertiveness in regional and international affairs. This has only become more pronounced since the 19th Party National Congress in October 2017, when Xi Jinping reiterated his agenda for “the Chinese Dream.” In contrast, the US’s “Pivot to Asia” strategy has been widely perceived as unsuccessful. In its precarious political position between China and the United States, Taiwan is especially exposed to the fluctuations in policy and diplomatic relations between the two powers. The three bilateral relationships are intertwined, with policy changes and actions in any one of them affecting the other two. Wang emphasizes the “small power” and “disputed nation-state” perspective of Taiwan, over the “great power politics” of the United States and China. In doing so, he presents an analysis of how the changing dynamics of Sino–US relations and the great power transition in Asia have an impact on smaller stakeholders in the region. A valuable resource for scholars and policy-makers with a focus on Taiwan’s position in Sino–US relations.

Stargazing
Stargazing is a heartwarming middle-grade graphic novel in the spirit of Real Friends and El Deafo, from New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Jen Wang. Moon is everything Christine isn''t. She’s confident, impulsive, artistic . . . and though they both grew up in the same Chinese-American suburb, Moon is somehow unlike anyone Christine has ever known. But after Moon moves in next door, these unlikely friends are soon best friends, sharing their favorite music videos and painting their toenails when Christine''s strict parents aren''t around. Moon even tells Christine her deepest secret: that she has visions, sometimes, of celestial beings who speak to her from the stars. Who reassure her that earth isn''t where she really belongs. Moon''s visions have an all-too-earthly root, however, and soon Christine''s best friend is in the hospital, fighting for her life. Can Christine be the friend Moon needs, now, when the sky is falling? Jen Wang draws on her childhood to paint a deeply personal yet wholly relatable friendship story that’s at turns joyful, heart-wrenching, and full of hope.

Longevity, the Current and Recent Antiaging Medicine, and Clinical Trials

release date: Dec 02, 2017
Longevity, the Current and Recent Antiaging Medicine, and Clinical Trials
Current health strategy has usually concentrated on the treatment of diseases after its start within a general health-care system. The way is harsh for the people. The trend of expenditures in health care will nearly undoubtedly lead to massive rises in medical expenses, likely failing the national health insurance system. The flow of healthcare would be set to change, with more critical rank involved in preventive medicine. Thus, with its focus on aging, anti-aging medicine might play a vital character in preventive medicine. For example, there are two antiaging drugs (USA) and one antiaging nutraceutical (Japan) for the human clinical trials under the approvals by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and these tests are ongoing. The term for anti-aging clinical trials is the first time to be used approved by FDA for the clinical trial using metformin. The first example of this standard change is approval by FDA of the clinical trial for deciding the efficacy of metformin, in reducing the risk for aging-associated diseases. This book is intended to introduce these messages to ordinary people. Hopefully, people will have a better future.

The Maculoprotective Effect of a Thiol Antioxidant in Retinal Degeneration Models

release date: Jan 01, 2017
The Maculoprotective Effect of a Thiol Antioxidant in Retinal Degeneration Models
"Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness among adults, age 60 and older, in developed countries. While oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of AMD, clinical studies have shown that dietary antioxidants can delay progression of AMD. Currently, there is no FDA-approved treatment for AMD. Therefore, we hypothesized that N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA), a thiol antioxidant, would protect retinal pigment epithelium and impede the progression of retinal degeneration. The goal of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of NACA in preventing retinal pigment epithelial cell and photoreceptor death in AMD models. To achieve this, we used the oxidants tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and sodium iodate (NaIO3) in a cell model and an animal model to evaluate the effects of NACA. Our data suggest that pretreatment with NACA reduces the sub-lethal (but not lethal) effects of TBHP in primary cultures of human retinal pigment epithelial cells. NACA significantly improves cell survival when administered prior to and during the occurrence of oxidative damage similar to that observed in the development of dry AMD. In the chemically- induced retinal degeneration animal model, NACA eye drops partially prevented reduction in visual function, as determined from electroretinograms (ERG) recorded 36 hours after NaIO3 injection. Other toxic effects were observed at a later time point after NaIO3 injection: increased lipid peroxidation (as measured by formation of 4-hydroxynonenal, 4-HNE), elevated cysteine levels, and death of photoreceptors resulting in outer nuclear layer thinning. NACA eye drops reversed these toxic effects. In conclusion, this potent antioxidant should continue to be investigated as a treatment for AMD"--Abstract, page iv.

Peanuts: A Tribute to Charles M. Schulz
What¡¯s to Love: No one can deny the cultural impact of Charles M. Schulz¡¯s Peanuts, and it has been a singular honor for us to be able to continue his legacy. In 2015, Peanuts celebrates its 65th anniversary, so we thought there was no better way to recognize Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the rest of the gang than to invite some of the world¡¯s best-known names in comics, children¡¯s books, comic strips, cartoons, and webcomics to come together and show their love for Schulz. What It Is: Peanuts: A Tribute to Charles M. Schulz is a giant love letter from creators new and old from comic strips to webcomics, children¡¯s books to comic books. Unprecedented at this scale, it is very rare for the Schulz estate to allow other cartoonists to illustrate the Peanuts gang in their own signature styles. This collection of original stories, pin-ups, and strips pay tribute to Schulz and the world of Peanuts, and includes contributions from Raina Telgemeier (Smile), Jen Wang (In Real Life), Patrick McDonnell (Mutts), Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo), Terry Moore (Rachel Rising), Mike Allred (Silver Surfer), Paul Pope (Battling Boy), and many more. The Rise of China and Chinese International Relations Scholarship

release date: Aug 23, 2013
The Rise of China and Chinese International Relations Scholarship
This book looks at the relationship between Chinese international relations (IR) scholarship and China’s rise as a world power. Specifically, it addresses how China’s rising international status since the early 1990s has shaped the country’s IR studies, and the different ways that Chinese IR scholars are interpreting that rise. The author argues that the development of IR studies in China has been influenced by China’s past historical experiences, its recent change in status in world politics, and indigenous scholarly interpretations of both factors. Instead of treating Chinese IR scholars as value-free social scientists, the author shows how Chinese scholars—as purposive, strategic, and emotional actors—tend to manipulate existing (mostly Western) IR theories to support their policy propositions and identity statements. This book represents one of few efforts to determine how local Chinese scholars are constructing IR knowledge, how they are dealing with intersections between indigenous Chinese and imported IR theory and concepts, and how Chinese scholars are analyzing “their China” in terms of its current rise to power.

Low Temperature Lithographically Patterned Metal Oxide Transistors for Large Area Electronics

Low Temperature Lithographically Patterned Metal Oxide Transistors for Large Area Electronics
Optically transparent, wide bandgap metal oxide semiconductors are a promising candidate for large-area electronics technologies that require lightweight, temperature-sensitive flexible substrates. Because these thin films retain relatively high carrier mobilities even in an amorphous state, metal oxide-based field effect transistors (FETs) can be processed at near-room temperatures. Compared to amorphous silicon FETs, which are the dominant technology used in display backplanes, metal oxide FETs have been demonstrated with higher charge carrier mobilities, higher current densities, and faster response performance. In this thesis we present a low-temperature (''1000C), scalable, fully lithographic process for top-gate, bottom-contact amorphous zinc indium oxide FETs using parylene, a room-temperature-deposited CVD polymer, as gate dielectric. Electrical characteristics were compared for FETs of varying device dimensions (W, L) using a standard set of extracted device parameters. We show in both simulation and experiment that the FET threshold voltage can be modified by varying the channel thickness alone, without requiring the additional complexity of multiple channel materials or different dopings. The baseline lithographic process was further developed to enable the integration of FETs of different channel thicknesses, and hence threshold voltages, on a single substrate. The availability of FETs with different threshold voltages allows the implementation of enhancement-depletion (E/D) logic circuits that have faster speeds and smaller device areas than single-VT topologies. Using the two-VT lithographic process, we fabricated integrated E/D inverters that operate at VDD as low as 3V with gains u003e 20 and symmetric noise margins ~1.2V. Furthermore, we demonstrated integrated 11-stage and 21-stage E/D ring oscillators that operated rail-to-rail at VDD= 3V and maintained oscillation for VDD as low as 1.7V. These results demonstrate the potential for low VDD metal oxide-based integrated circuits fabricated in a low temperature budget, fully lithographic process for large-area transparent electronics.

Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle Disruption of Store-operated Calcium Entry in a Muscarinic Receptor Signaling Pathway

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle Disruption of Store-operated Calcium Entry in a Muscarinic Receptor Signaling Pathway
"The influences of ZnO nanoparticles on cellular responses to activation of muscarinic receptors were studied in Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing the human M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. ZnO particles (20 nm) induced cytotoxicity in a time and concentration-dependent manner: following a 24 h exposure, toxicity was minimal at concentrations below 20 [mu]g/ml but virtually complete at concentrations above 28 [mu]g/ml. ZnO particles did not affect antagonist binding to M3 receptors or allosteric ligand effects, but increased agonist binding affinity while eliminating guanine nucleotide sensitivity. At a noncytotoxic concentration (10 [mu]g/ml), ZnO increased resting [Ca2]i from 40 to 130 nM without compromising calcium homeostatic mechanisms. ZnO particles had minimal effects on inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3)- or thapsigargin-mediated release of intracellular calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum, but strongly inhibited store operated calcium entry (capacitive calcium entry). The latter effect was seen as 1) a decrease in the plateau phase of the response and 2) a decrease in Ca2 entry upon introduction of calcium to the extracellular medium following thapsigargin-induced depletion of calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum (EC50''s [approximately] 2 [mu]g/ml). Thus, ZnO nanoparticles interfere with two specific aspects of the M3 signaling pathway, agonist binding and store operated calcium entry"--Abstract, leaf iii
