Searching for Rosanna

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Searching for Rosanna
Searching for Rosanna was inspired by a family legend of Revolutionary War heroism. Rosanna Waters Farrow rescued her three Patriot sons from imminent execution by the British Colonel John Cruger. Or so the story goes. The author's quest to determine the veracity of the tale sparked a journey to the beginnings of colonial America. This family history winds through Jamestown and Bermuda, the Northern Neck of Virginia, and the backcountry of South Carolina. The author's ancestors were ordinary colonists, all of whom lived extraordinary lives. She comes to know them through the history of the times in which they lived. Her family's story is one many Americans share: ancestors who left family, home and country for an uncertain life in a New World.(More)The author learned about Rosanna through her grandmother's application to the Daughters of the American Revolution; coincidentally, her husband's grandmother applied to the DAR also citing Rosanna and her legendary heroism, thus revealing a shared ancestral line. Research took the couple to battlefields and gravesites, which are included in the appendices. Narratives by family members on both sides are included as a gift to future generations.

Don't Look, Lucy!

Don't Look, Lucy!
I wrote this book after a nasty incident of discrimination when my daughter was three. She is nineteen now. I want to put this book in the public domain as a child-friendly approach to the dos and don'ts of interacting with people with differences. This book explores how my daughter would feel after a shopping trip when she is perceived with positivity and then negativity. I've read so many delightful children's books to pupils over the years. I wanted to capture a message and a memory in mine.

Challenging Standards in Mathematics

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Challenging Standards in Mathematics
This report is one in a series of reference documents designed especially to assist educators who are directly involved in the revision and improvement of content standards. It presumes a basic understanding of the purposes for standards and the process of standards review and evaluation. This document is intended to be a desktop reference volume that curriculum specialists might use to focus and revise existing mathematics content. This report also may be useful to educators and policymakers who want to ensure that the mathematics standards they hold for high school graduates are adequate to satisfy the expectations of post-secondary institutions and employers. This report focuses attention on student knowledge and skills in mathematics that recently have been identified as important for success beyond high school but that are not found even among state standards that have been highly rated. Identification of this important but missing mathematics content resulted from a comparison of national and highly rated state documents that describe what students should know and be able to do by the end of 12th grade against documents that describe the knowledge and skills that incoming college students should acquire to be successful in their first year of college. The analysis showed that most of the content identified as important for post-secondary schooling does indeed appear in state and national standards documents; however, a small number of concepts in skills important for incoming college students are not.

Sequenced Benchmarks for K-12 Mathematics

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Sequenced Benchmarks for K-12 Mathematics
This report presents mathematics benchmarks organized into instructional sequences by topic. Each sequence is based upon an analysis of the order of content as it appears among a set of highly rated state standards. The report is intended to inform and guide state or district curriculum directors or others who, starting from content that is placed within broad grade bands, need to assign specific grades to benchmarks or objectives. Alternatively, those who have benchmarks or objectives already placed at specific grades may wish to compare the sequence of content outlined in this report in order to confirm the commonality of that sequence. Teachers may find the sequence of content useful for organizing instruction. The product of this analysis across the standards documents is presented in 31 topic sequences. Each sequence represents the articulation of that aspect of a topic that was supported by evidence from state standards documents. The topics that could be sequenced in this report comprise 123 unique benchmarks. Reviewing each topic in turn, users can compare the content to their own state standards document.
