Some Achieve Greatness

release date: May 04, 2021
Some Achieve Greatness
“Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.” William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night Around the globe people have been crying out for “Leadership”: demanding it, begging for it. From the farcical spectacle of short-lived Australian prime ministers shoving each other through the revolving door to scandalous failures of governance in Australia’s financial institutions and the moral abyss in church leadership, to the mess of Brexit and the chaotic unpredictability of the Trump administration, and now the greatest leadership challenge since World War II: Covid-19. Stable, reliable, sensible leadership has been in short supply. We often resort to the word ‘Shakespearean’ to explain our dramatic times. And indeed, we can learn a lot from Shakespeare about leadership – good and bad. The world’s greatest analyst of human behaviour and motivation; a man well acquainted with crises of leadership in tumultuous times; a man whose dry wit, bottomless empathy enabled him to encapsulate countless valuable life lessons that still ring with relevance today. As someone who has spent a good deal of the last seventy-something years studying, performing and directing Shakespeare’s plays, John Bell has absorbed quite a few valuable lessons in life, character and leadership from the bard, and then put these to good use running two successful theatre companies. Some Achieve Greatness contains invaluable lessons on leadership, drawn from John Bell’s extensive relationship with Shakespeare and his own experience as a cultural leader, illustrated with an irreverent and contemporary set of cartoons by Cathy Wilcox.

Lyon Township

release date: Sep 22, 2014
Lyon Township
Lyon Township and the unincorporated hamlet of New Hudson are nestled in the southwest corner of Oakland County. They have a rich history of agricultural production. Early 20th-century records show that farmers and families socialized closely with their neighbors in the nearby village of South Lyon when the hard work of the day was done. New Hudson supported two general stores, a tavern, a post office, schools, and churches. However, the start of the I-96 expressway in the 1950s took commuters off the streets and away from local businesses, causing some to close. By the 21st century, the tides turned again, when the proximity to the expressway brought attention to the community and heralded in a new construction boom, earning Lyon Township the distinction in 2012 as one of Michigan’s fastest-growing communities.

10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10

release date: Aug 29, 2014
10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10
A single line of code offers a way to understand the cultural context of computing. This book takes a single line of code—the extremely concise BASIC program for the Commodore 64 inscribed in the title—and uses it as a lens through which to consider the phenomenon of creative computing and the way computer programs exist in culture. The authors of this collaboratively written book treat code not as merely functional but as a text—in the case of 10 PRINT, a text that appeared in many different printed sources—that yields a story about its making, its purpose, its assumptions, and more. They consider randomness and regularity in computing and art, the maze in culture, the popular BASIC programming language, and the highly influential Commodore 64 computer.

Advance And Retreat: Personal Experiences In The United States And Confederate States Armies [Illustrated Edition]

release date: Nov 06, 2015
Advance And Retreat: Personal Experiences In The United States And Confederate States Armies [Illustrated Edition]
Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. “When John Bell Hood entered into the services of the Confederate Army, he was 29 years old, a handsome man and courageous soldier, loyal to the ideal of Confederate Independence and eager to fight for it. He led his men bravely into the battles of Second Manassas, Gaines’s Mill, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. He rose fast, attaining the temporary rank of full general, only to fall faster. Hood emerged from the war with his left arm shattered and useless, his right leg missing, his face aged far beyond his 33 years, and with his military reputation in disgrace. Blamed by contemporaries for contributing to the defeat of his beloved Confederacy, Hood struggled to refute their accusations. His most vehement critic, General Johnston, charged Hood with insubordination while serving under him and, after succeeding him in command, of recklessly leading Confederate troops to their “slaughter” and “useless butchery.” Sherman, too, in his Memoirs, took a harsh view of Hood. Born of controversy, Advance and Retreat is of course a highly controversial book. It is also full of invaluable information and insights into the retreat from Dalton in early 1864, the fighting around Atlanta, and the disastrous Tennessee Campaign in winter of that year. Far from being a careful, sober, objective account, this book is the passionate, bitter attempt of a soldier to rebut history’s judgment of himself as general and man.”-Print ed.

Rebels on the Great Lakes

release date: Sep 14, 2011
Rebels on the Great Lakes
In 1863–1864, Confederate naval operations were launched from Canada against America, with an unexpected impact on North America’s future. Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, a myth has persisted that the hijackers entered the United States from Canada. This is completely untrue. Nevertheless, there was a time during the U.S. Civil War when attacks on America were launched from Canada, but the aggressors were mostly fellow Americans engaged in a secessionist struggle. Among the attacks were three daring naval commando expeditions against a prisoner-of-war camp on Johnsons Island in Lake Erie. These Confederate operations on the Great Lakes remain largely unknown. However, some of the people involved did make more indelible marks in history, including a future Canadian prime minister, a renowned Victorian war correspondent, a beloved Catholic poet, a notorious presidential assassin, and a son of the abolitionist John Brown. The improbable events linking these figures constitute a story worth telling and remembering. Rebels on the Great Lakes offers the first full account of the Confederate naval operations launched from Canada in 186364, describing forgotten military actions that ultimately had an unexpected impact on North Americas future.

Liszt

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Liszt
Franz Liszt was one of the most awe-inspiring figures in all of music history. As a composer, he was experimental and inventive, pushing the boundaries of form and harmony. As a pianist, he possessed breathtaking virtuosity: his masterful technique was almost acrobatic. Liszt left behind an enormous body of piano music - by turns poetic, glittering, prophetic, profound, and haunting - that failed to command the acclaim it deserved in his lifetime. Today, however, Franz Liszt is widely known as both a brilliant composer and one of the greatest pianists ever.

On Shakespeare

release date: Jan 01, 2012
On Shakespeare
With humor, wit, and based on a lifetime of experience, a fascinating backstage pass to the life and plays of the Bard from a Shakespearean actor and director with 50 years of experience So I'm sitting here backstage, waiting for my entrance, caked in fake blood and taking part in a play that is brutal, nihilistic and offensive according to all criteria of "good taste." And it's thrilling. Did Shakespeare really write all those plays? Why do actors do Shakespeare in modern dress? How does one prepare a role? What's it like doing a long run? Did Shakespeare believe in ghosts? Was he a subversive? Every day after every performance around the world, theatergoers ask these sorts of questions. Here, a man who thinks, breathes, and interprets Shakespeare's canon every day of his life gives his responses to these questions based on experience and reflection. After many years of reading, performing, and directing Shakespeare in the UK and in Australia with the Bell Shakespeare Company, John Bell offers a unique view of the histories, tragedies, comedies, and romances, and a memorable insight into the sonnets. His passionate relationship with Shakespeare informs and deepens our understanding of the man and his works. Vivid, accessible, and fascinating, this is a book that confirms Shakespeare's enduring relevance to our lives.

Beethoven's Symphonies

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Beethoven's Symphonies
Ludwig Van Beethoven's nine symphonies stand as towering masterworks at the core of the classical canon. In Beethoven's hands, the symphony expanded dramatically in scope and power in a way that would revolutionise both the form itself and music in general. The impact of Beethoven's nine was such that composers long after him would write their own symphonies in his shadow. In this book, acclaimed Pianist and critic John Bell Young explores each of the nine symphonies, always looking beneath the surface for what makes the music so compelling. He places them in their historical and cultural context, and he describes how the Russian concept of intonatsiia, a way of perceiving relationships "between the notes," can help deepen our appreciation of these pieces. The accompanying CD contains selections from all of the symphonies, each performance conducted by the legendary Wilhelm Furtwangler.

Principles of French Law

release date: Mar 27, 2008
Principles of French Law
Principles of French Law offers a comprehensive introduction to French law and the French legal system in terms which a common lawyer can understand. The authors give an explanation of the institutions, rules and techniques that characterize the major branches of French law. The chapters provide the reader with a clear sense of the questions that French lawyers see as important and how they would answer them. In the ten years since the publication of the first edition, French law has changed in significant ways. European Union law and the European Convention on Human Rights have had a significant impact, especially on procedural law and family law. There has been a new Commercial Code, major legislation on divorce, succession and criminal law, as well as significant developments in the Constitution. In addition, there have been considerable developments in the case-law and a much discussed proposal for reform of major areas of the law of obligations. The chapters present not only the rules of law, but, where appropriate, the principles and values underlying the system. Considerable use is made of juristic literature and of examples from French case law. The book is designed for students studying French law at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and as preliminary reading for students about to study in France. It will also serve as an initial point of reference for scholars embarking on a study of French law.

Their creators Joe Shuster, Harold Foster, Dave Sim, and Todd McFarlane are Canadians. And while many of the cutting-edge talents of contemporary comix and graphic novels are also from Canada artists such as Chester Brown, Seth, Dave Cooper, and Julie Doucet far too few Canadians realize their country had a remarkable involvement with the "funnies" long before. Invaders from the North profiles past and present comic geniuses, sheds light on unjustly neglected chapters in Canadas pop history, and demonstrates how this nation has vaulted to the forefront of international comic art, successfully challenging the long-established boundaries between high and low culture. Generously illustrated with black-and-white and colour comic covers and panels, Invaders from the North serves up a cheeky, brash cavalcade of flamboyant and outrageous personalities and characters that graphically attest to Canadas verve and invention in the world of visual storytelling.

Bell's investigations offer lessons on issues which the English judiciary was having to confront in the period of reform at the time of this book's publication.

Non-Governmental Organisations in International Law
Even when governments have no democratic basis, they are regarded as the sole representatives of their populations on the international plane and take important decisions on their behalf. It is therefore important that other voices can be heard in international fora alongside governments. NGOs have an increasingly important legal and political role and use several different avenues for their work, such as lodging cases before international courts and other bodies and participating in international meetings and conferences. This book explores these possibilities for the participation of NGOs in international law.

In Apartheid's Shadow

release date: May 21, 2019
In Apartheid's Shadow
In 1952 an Australian journalist cabled from Johannesburg 'Apartheid is the trigger that has fired racial explosions in South Africa and sent echoes rumbling around the world'. In the outposts of Europe's unstable empires, entrenched racism came under unprecedented assault. 'White Australia', especially, was challenged as opposition to racial oppression under a white minority regime in South Africa hardened. In both countries the politics of anti-racism were unleashed - albeit in different ways and with very different consequences. In South Africa entrenched systems of white supremacy were brutally enforced under Apartheid. In Australia, ideologies of race and white privilege were disrupted and, slowly, walls of discrimination cracked. Race politics in post-war Australia was deeply affected by the fractious international struggle over apartheid. The movement against apartheid obliged white Australia to grapple with moral and political issues embedded in its own racialised history and sense of nation. Contests provoked by apartheid were played out on the world stage and, as Indigenous activists emphasised, in Australia's own backyard. This pioneering book explores these struggles as white Australia was hesitantly rejected and the nation negotiated its place in a post-colonial world.

Epitaph on a Beech Tree - a Tale of the Great War

release date: Apr 01, 2018
Epitaph on a Beech Tree - a Tale of the Great War
Epitaph on a Beech Tree is a love story set around the time of the Great War. It postulates the life of an invisible hero; just another everyman for whom all individual records have been lost. Ben Robinson, a miner who becomes a despatch rider during the war, can't accept the concept of duty as defined by populist notions of 'King, Country and Religion'. Even so, he serves with distinction at some of the most destructive battles in a three-year campaign, winning the Military Medal (MM). But when his sense of purpose is destroyed, he is left clutching at straws. After the war, his situation leads him into two, unfulfilling relationships, both of which, in different ways, help to re-establish his true, spiritual identity. The story is authorised by Divisional War Diaries and Records, and observations and anecdotes gathered by the author and his family. The fiction relies on perceptions of social and emotional characteristics which continue to inspire and bedevil attempts at personal, domestic, national and international well-being.
