British Militarism, Sport, Remembrance

release date: Oct 31, 2025
British Militarism, Sport, Remembrance
British Militarism, Sport, Remembrance: "Support the Troops" critically explores the complex and evolving relationship between sport and militarism in the UK, offering an in-depth analysis of how political power and ideological narratives are constructed and contested through this nexus. Framed around a clear thematic arc spanning power, politics, media representation, sociological interpretation, and ideological paradox, the book provides the first comprehensive resource on the sport-military connection in a British context. Drawing from a wide range of examples, it examines how sport is routinely employed to generate public support for the military, particularly through campaigns and rituals linked to national remembrance and troop appreciation. Each chapter builds on the last: from unpacking the political dimensions of militarism and sport, to analysing the ideological weight of UK remembrance culture, to demonstrating how deeply embedded military support narratives are within sporting institutions. Ultimately, the book reveals how these narratives function in public life and media and exposes the ideological reality of the overarching "support the troops" orthodoxy embedded in everyday life in the UK. This book will be useful for students, scholars, and researchers in the fields of sociology, political science, sport studies, cultural studies, and media studies, as well as policymakers and those working in the military or sport sectors who seek a deeper understanding of the ideological role of sport in shaping public perceptions of the military in the UK.

Vietnam Studies - U.S. Army Special Forces 1961-1971

release date: Aug 15, 2014
Vietnam Studies - U.S. Army Special Forces 1961-1971
Includes 6 Maps, 25 photo illustrations, 10 Charts and 8 Tables. "As long ago as 1957, U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers were in the Republic of Vietnam, going about their business of training, advising, and assisting members of the Vietnamese Army. Despite the old Army witticism about never volunteering for anything, the Special Forces soldier is, in fact, a double volunteer, having first volunteered for airborne training and then again for Special Forces training. From a very meager beginning but sustained by a strong motivation and confidence in his mission, the Special Forces soldier has marched through the Vietnam struggle in superb fashion. "In 1957 some fifty-eight Vietnamese soldiers were given military training by Special Forces troops. Ten years later the Special Forces were advising and assisting over 40,000 paramilitary troops, along with another 40,000 Regional Forces and Popular Forces soldiers. This monograph traces the development and notes the progress, problems, successes, and failures of a unique program undertaken by the U.S. Army for the first time in its history. It is hoped that all the significant lessons learned have been recorded and the many pitfalls of such a program uncovered... "With the withdrawal of the Special Forces from Vietnam in 1971, the Army could honestly lay claim to a new dimension in ground warfare the organized employment of a paramilitary force in sustained combat against a determined enemy. I know I speak for my predecessors and successors in claiming that the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was the finest collection of professional soldiers ever assembled by the U.S. Army, anywhere, anytime."

A Cultural History of the Atlantic World, 1250-1820
"A Cultural History of the Atlantic World, 1250-1820 explores the idea that strong links exist in the histories of Africa, Europe and North and South America. John K. Thornton provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the Atlantic Basin before 1830 by describing political, social and cultural interactions between the continents' inhabitants. He traces the backgrounds of the populations on these three continental landmasses brought into contact by European navigation. Thornton then examines the political and social implications of the encounters, tracing the origins of a variety of Atlantic societies and showing how new ways of eating, drinking, speaking and worshipping developed in the newly created Atlantic World. This book uses close readings of original sources to produce new interpretations of its subject"--

Parties, Elections, and Policy Reforms in Western Europe
This book provides a comparative assessment of social pacts between governments, labor unions and employer organizations in Western Europe. Using a dataset covering 16 European countries, as well as eight in-depth country case studies, the authors argue that governments’ choice of social pacts or legislation is less influenced by economic problems, but is strongly influenced by electoral competition.

Rethinking Industrial Relations

release date: Jan 31, 2002
Rethinking Industrial Relations
This original book is a wide-ranging, radical and highly innovative critique of the prevailing orthodoxies within industrial relations and human resource management. It covers: * central problems in industrial relations * the mobilization theory of collective action * the growth of non-union workplaces and the prospects and desirability of a new labour-management social partnership * an historical account of worker collectivism, organization and militancy and state or employer counter mobilization * a critique of postmodernism and accounts of the end of the labour movement. Containing a detailed examination of the evolution of industrial relations, it argues that the area is often under-theorized and influenced by the policy agenda of the state or employers, and will prove informative reading for students of industrial relations.

The Kongolese Saint Anthony

release date: Jan 01, 1998
The Kongolese Saint Anthony
Publisher description: This book tells the story of the Christian religious movement led by Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita in the Kingdom of Kongo from 1704 until her death, by burning at the stake, in 1706. Beatriz, a young woman, claimed to be possessed by St Anthony, argued that Jesus was a Kongolese, and criticized Italian Capuchin missionaries in her country for not supporting black saints. The movement was largely a peace movement, with a following among the common people, attempting to stop the devastating cycle of civil wars between contenders for the Kongolese throne. Thornton supplies background information on the Kingdom, the development of Catholicism in Kongo since 1491, the nature and role of local warfare in the Atlantic slave trade, and contemporary everyday life, as well as sketching the lives of some local personalities.

Development of the Capacitor Discharge Vaporization Technique to Produce Aerosols Formed Under Conditions Postulated for Hypothetical Core Disruptive Accidents

Development of the Capacitor Discharge Vaporization Technique to Produce Aerosols Formed Under Conditions Postulated for Hypothetical Core Disruptive Accidents
This report describes the development of a Capacitor Discharge Vaporization (CDV) method for the out-of-pile creation of energy states in fast breeder reactor fuel (or simulants) that are consistent with those postulated for Hypothetical Core Disruptive Accidents (HCDA). The results of the development experiments, concurrent planning, test article construction, peripheral equipment design and construction, and computer modeling studies are discussed in relation to their effects on the design of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Capacitor Discharge Vaporization (ORNL CDV) System. The completed ORNL CDV System is described in detail, including all the required subsystems and data acquisition equipment. Operational features, equipment capability, and expected performance are also discussed.
