The popular Rock Island Railroad stretched from Chicago to Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas with passenger and freight service, and included the Peoria Rocket, Des Moines Rocket, Quad City Rocket, Texas Rocket, Kansas City Rocket, Twin Star Rocket, Zephyr-Rocket, Rocky Mountain Rocket, the flagship Golden State between Chicago and Los Angeles, and suburban commuter service in Chicago. Included are system map, timetables, travel brochures and full-color section of Rock Island depots and stations.

The Great Northern Railway (GN) main line stretched 1,700 miles from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Seattle, Washington, and was the most northern transcontinental railroad in the United States. In addition, GN branch lines stretched north from the Twin Cities to Superior and the Minnesota Iron Ore Range, and from Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Winnipeg, Manitoba; through Montana to Great Falls, Helena and Butte, and from Seattle to Vancouver, British Columbia. Other popular Great Northern passenger trains were the Badger-Gopher (St. Paul-Superior-Duluth), Dakotan (St. Paul-Minot), Cascadian (Seattle-Spokane), Red River (St. Paul-Grand Forks), Internationals (Seattle-Vancouver) and Winnipeg Limited (St. Paul-Winnipeg). Historic images include 4-4-0 steam locomotive William Crooks, the first steam locomotive to operate in Minnesota. Like other railroads, Great Northern purchased diesel locomotives from Electro-Motive Division consisting of the FT, F3, F7 and E7. Later models were U25B, U28B, U33C, SDP40, SDP45 and the first SD45 named “Hustle Muscle.” Also pictured are boxcab Z-1, Y-1 and W-1 electric locomotives.

Interurban Trains to Chicago follows Samuel Insull's Great Chicago Systems, three superb interurban routes powered by electric traction that carried passengers from the north, west and southwest into downtown Chicago. They were the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad, Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad, and the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad. Coverage includes the Skokie Valley Route, South Shore Lines and Sunset Lines. Vintage photographs, timetables and poster advertising are featured.

With declining passenger revenues Burlington President Ralph Budd realized something unique was needed to lure passengers back to train travel. The result was the Zephyr. The Zephyr's appeal during the Great Depression was tremendous, its sleek lines and streamline design was the beginning of a styling revolution. In 1934, the only real hope was the future and the future was the Zephyr. A Burlington Superintendent best summed the Zephyr experience in these words, ''You would first notice a speck of stainless-steel emerging out of the distant haze. Then in spectacular fashion it would flash by, a mass of shimmering steel, traveling a hundred miles an hour and within seconds vanish again in the distance.'' Featured in high quality photos and descriptive captions the Burlington Zephyrs are shown in a variety of scenic, rural and urban settings.
