release date: Oct 09, 2020
A Concise History of the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War, 1846-1847
Tyler''s narrative has long been considered the authoritative work on this heroic battalion of Mormon volunteers. The battalion, numbering about 500 men, was organized at Council Bluffs, Iowa, in July 1846. After reaching Santa Fe, they headed to California following the Gila River. They experienced, as reflected in Tyler''s vividly written account, a journey filled with unbelievable hardship. Thirst, starvation, heat, and freezing cold were their constant companions." The reached San Diego in January 1847 and, though they never saw combat, they "established Fort Moore in Los Angeles and strengthened the American hold on California. In addition to telling the story of the trek west, Tyler provides and important overview of the bitter rivalry between Stephen Watts Kearny and John C. Fremont for political control of newly conquered California; life in the pueblos of San Diego and Los Angeles; the return journey to Salt Lake City; and the role of several ''Battalion Boys'' who were at Sutter''s Mill on that fateful January 1848 morning when John Marshall discovered gold."—Zamorano 80

Items on the Priesthood, presented to the Latter-day Saints
In "Items on the Priesthood, presented to the Latter-day Saints," John Taylor, a prominent early leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, addresses the theological and practical implications of priesthood within the context of the Latter-day Saint movement. Through a series of insightful essays and reflections, Taylor combines doctrinal exposition with a pastoral tone, emphasizing the importance of priesthood authority, its divine origin, and its role in the spiritual governance of the church. Body Horror

release date: Sep 01, 1998
Body Horror
What compels us to look at shocking photographs or, alternatively, to look away? Should the media use disturbing images to inform, at the risk of offending? How is our sense of politics, morality, and culture affected when we are exposed to gruesome images of accidents and disasters, murder and execution, grief and death? In Body Horror, John Taylor addresses these questions by examining how the media presents unsettling pictures, especially those of dead and injured "foreigners." Drawing on recent experiences in the Gulf, Bosnia and Rwanda, Taylor argues that documentary photography, for all the horror it reproduces, ultimately defines a democracy. Fully aware of the voyeuristic aspects of photojournalism, Taylor probes the difficulty of applying moral imperatives when separating the utility of showing images of suffering and violence from the risk of either insulting or gratifying public sensibilities. A compelling documentary of photography''s cultural and political power, Body Horror analyzes the moral responsibility attached to publishing and bearing witness to photographs of violence, and the historical amnesia that arises when such imagery remains unseen.

An Inquiry Into the Principles and Policy of the Government of the United States

release date: Jan 01, 1998
An Inquiry Into the Principles and Policy of the Government of the United States
Originally published in 1814, this is a reprint of the Yale University Press 1950 edition with an introduction by Roy Franklin Nichols. 562 pp. Taylor wrote this important work in 1814 as a reply to John Adams's Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America. Unlike Adams, he rejects the concept of "a natural aristocracy" of "paper and patronage" and a federal government based on a system of debt and taxes. He considers the American government to be one of divided powers responsible to the sovereign people alone. Opposed to the extent of power awarded to the executive office, he calls for shorter terms for the president and all elected officers. Charles Beard said this work "deserves to rank among the two or three really historic contributions to political science which have been produced in the United States." JOHN TAYLOR [1753-1824] was known as "John Taylor of Caroline County, Virginia." He served in the Continental Army and later in the Virginia House of Delegates, then served three terms as a member of the United States Senate. He is considered to be one of the nation's greatest philosophers of agrarian liberalism. He was one of the nation's first proponents of states' rights. His works include New Views of the Constitution of the United States (1823), Construction Construed, and Constitutions Vindicated (1820) and A Defence of the Measures of the Administration of Thomas Jefferson. By Curtius (1804), an argument in favor of the achievements of the first Jefferson administration.
