An Outcast of the Islands

An Outcast of the Islands
An Outcast of the Islands is the second novel by Joseph Conrad, published in 1896, inspired by Conrad''s experience as mate of a steamer, the Vidar. The novel details the undoing of Peter Willems, a disreputable, immoral man who, on the run from a scandal in Makassar, finds refuge in a hidden native village, only to betray his benefactors over lust for the tribal chief''s daughter. The story features Conrad''s recurring character Tom Lingard, who also appears in Almayer''s Folly (1895) and The Rescue (1920), in addition to sharing other characters with those novels. It is considered to be underrated as a work of literature for many. Conrad romanticizes the jungle environment and its inhabitants in a similar style to his Heart of Darkness. This novel was adapted into the film Outcast of the Islands in 1951 by director Carol Reed, featuring Trevor Howard as Willems, Ralph Richardson as Lingard, Robert Morley, and Wendy Hiller. The work was quoted in T. S. Eliot''s The Hollow Men (''Life is very long.''). (wikipedia.org)

Nostromo - A Tale of the Seaboard (Unabridged Deluxe Edition)
In ''Nostromo: A Tale of the Seaboard,'' Joseph Conrad weaves a complex narrative set in the fictional South American country of Costaguana, grappling with imperialism, capitalism, and human greed. This unabridged deluxe edition showcases Conrad''s renowned literary style, characterized by a rich, lyrical prose and a multi-layered structure that invites readers to ponder the intricacies of moral ambiguity. The book unfolds through a diverse cast of characters whose fates intertwine in the pursuit of silver mines, revealing the corrupting influence of wealth and the fragile nature of civilization. As a work deeply rooted in the socio-political climate of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it critically examines colonial exploitation and the complexities of identity in an age of imperial ambition. Joseph Conrad, born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857, drew from his own experiences as a sailor and a keen observer of the world to craft his narratives. His time in South America, coupled with his Polish heritage, provided a unique perspective on the themes he explores in ''Nostromo.'' Conrad''s exploration of moral dilemmas and his portrayal of characters trapped by their circumstances reflect his broader existential concerns and critique of European colonial pursuits. This masterwork is recommended for readers seeking a profound exploration of the human condition amidst the backdrop of colonialism. ''Nostromo'' challenges its audience to reflect on the ethical implications of wealth and power, making it a timeless and essential read for anyone interested in the intersections of history, morality, and literature.

Lord Jim and Nostromo

release date: Nov 01, 2000
Lord Jim and Nostromo
Selected by the Modern Library as two of the 100 best novels of all time Nostromo Originally published in 1904, Nostromo is considered by many to be Conrad''s supreme achievement. Set in the imaginary South American republic of Costaguana, the novel reveals the effects of unbridled greed and imperialist interests on many different lives. Although each character''s potential for good is ultimately corrupted, Nostromo underscores Conrad''s belief in fidelity, moral discipline, and the need for human communion. The author himself described the book as ''an intense creative effort on what I suppose will remain my largest canvas.'' ''Conrad endeavored to create a great, massive, multiphase symbol that would render his total vision of the world, his sense of individual destiny, his sense of man''s place in nature, his sense of history and society,'' observed Robert Penn Warren. ''Nostromo is the most strikingly modern of Conrad''s novels,'' said V. S. Pritchett. ''It is pervaded by a profound, even morbid sense of insecurity which is the very spirit of our age.'' This volume is the companion to the acclaimed multipart series aired on Masterpiece Theatre. Lord Jim Lord Jim is a classic story of one man''s tragic failure and eventual redemption, told under the circumstances of high adventure at the margins of the known world which made Conrad''s work so immediately popular. But it is also the book in which its author, through a brilliant adaptation of his stylistic apparatus to his obsessive moral, psychological and political concerns, laid the groundwork for the modern novel as we know it.

Under Western Eyes

Under Western Eyes
Bomb-throwing assassins, political repression and revolt, emigre revolutionaries infiltrated by a government spy: much of Under Western Eyes (1911) is more topical than we would wish. Set in Czarist Russia and in Geneva, and told through the Western eyes of Conrad''s English narrator, we are given a somber but not entirely pessimistic view of the human dilemmas which are born of oppression and violence. It is by common critical consent, one of Conrad''s finest novels.
