Dopo l’invasione e l’occupazione della Polonia nel settembre del 1939, furono cacciati dagli ufficiali tedeschi, riuniti in un ghetto e poi deportati. Fu reclusa con la madre in diversi lager, tra cui quello di Auschwitz-Birkenau, ed entrambe furono spedite a morire a Bergen-Belsen. Il 15 aprile 1945 l’esercito britannico le liberò, ma la madre morì in ospedale dodici giorni dopo la liberazione. Renee si è sposata con un ufficiale britannico e da allora vive a Londra.
