Making Mondragón

release date: Oct 15, 2014
Making Mondragón
Since its founding in 1956 in Spain''s Basque region, the Mondragón Corporation has been a touchstone for the international cooperative movement. Its nearly three hundred companies and organizations span areas from finance to education. In its industrial sector Mondragón has had a rich experience over many years in manufacturing products as varied as furniture, kitchen equipment, machine tools, and electronic components and in printing, shipbuilding, and metal smelting.Making Mondragón is a groundbreaking look at the history of worker ownership in the Spanish cooperative. First published in 1988, it remains the best source for those looking to glean a rich body of ideas for potential adaptation and implementation elsewhere from Mondragón''s long and varied experience. This second edition, published in 1991, takes into account the major structural and strategic changes that were being implemented in 1990 to allow the enterprise to compete successfully in the European common market.Mondragón has created social inventions and developed social structures and social processes that have enabled it to overcome some of the major obstacles faced by other worker cooperatives in the past. William Foote Whyte and Kathleen King Whyte describe the creation and evolution of the Mondragón cooperatives, how they have changed through decades of experience, and how they have struggled to maintain a balance between their social commitments and economic realities. The lessons of Mondragón apply most clearly to worker cooperatives and other employee-owned firms, but also extend to regional development and stimulating and supporting entrepreneurship, whatever the form of ownership.

The simple recipes collected here include such traditional favorites as Molasses Cookies, Lemon Bars, Peasant Bread, Buttermilk Biscuits, Peach Crumb Pie, Oat-Bran Muffins, Carrot Cake, Blueberry Buckle, Yellow Cake with Chocolate Icing, and, of course, unbeatable Chocolate Chip Cookies. Cricket Sings

Cricket Sings
For Cricket Sings, Cahokia medicine woman, the omens have been bad. She is old, and so at this year''s Sun Ceremony she will tell her stories, the tales handed down from grandparents to grandchildren since the memory of the People began. The Sun King is dying, unable to perfom the Ceremony which will bring good crops to the fields. Called to help because she is a healer, she is faced with the dilemma of whether to stimulate the comatose ruler long enough to perform the Ceremony or to poison him so that his son can perform it. Her decision to feign the King''s death by switching his body with that of another old man who has recently died puts her entire family in danger. This beautifully written novel explores the conflict between loyalty to the tradition of the People and the love of family. The resolution, set against the chaotic mourning for the Sun King, is compelling, believably constructed out of what little factual information is known about the prehistoric dwellers of Cahokia.

Equity Expansive Technical Assistance for Schools

release date: Jan 01, 2023
Equity Expansive Technical Assistance for Schools
Based on the author''s experience leading equity-focused technical assistance centers, this book details approaches to partnering with educators and other stakeholders to eliminate racial disproportionality in special education. Because of its historical and current relevance as an indicator of systemic oppression, Thorius centers disproportionality as a crucial issue to be addressed through technical assistance partnerships. For these partnerships to be successful, technical assistance providers must: (1) support partners in engaging with systemic and individual oppressions that contribute to inequities at the intersections of racism and ableism, and (2) introduce partners to resources that mediate learning about, and development of, locally relevant solutions that abolish racism and ableism in tandem. Equity Expansive Technical Assistance for Schools provides a research-based framework for conducting technical assistance, including vignettes and facilitation guides that educational leaders can use to address disproportionality in special education within their local contexts. Book Features: Detailed protocols for professional dialogue toward eliminating racial disproportionality in special education. Expanded definitions and descriptions of disproportionality as an issue of ableism, as well as racism. Real-life examples of technical assistance and professional development partnership activities that improve conditions leading to, and outcomes of, disproportionality.
