Cape

release date: Jun 20, 2023
Cape
A young child learns that even superheroes hurt too in this heartrending story about loss and love, written by debut author Kevin Johnson and illustrated by #1 New York Times bestselling illustrator Kitt Thomas. When a child loses the person in his life that he loves more than anything, he uses his cape as protection from his grief. On the day of the funeral, he uses it to block out the pictures and stories people share, refusing to acknowledge the memories that keep bubbling up. He won''t think about them. He doesn''t want to. He avoids the memories, until he no longer can. He remembers then. Their laugh, their smile, the moment they gave him the cape. The cape transforms, becoming a source of comfort and strength as the child navigates the sadness and joy that these memories bring up. In Cape, Kevin Johnson has crafted an achingly beautiful and honest story about processing and redefining grief after the loss of a loved one. With evocative illustrations by New York Times bestselling artist Kitt Thomas (Stacey’s Extraordinary Words), Cape is a powerful, unforgettable, and necessary story.

Desperate Action

Desperate Action
In similarity with other Kevin Johnson books, this crime thriller is best enjoyed by reading a chapter or two at a time, then to ponder the plot to the readers preference, then returning to do the same again. This can provide added reading enjoyment and mental stimulation. Our hero, Dr. Dan Thompson, ex RAAF pilot, having recently lost his wife of 20 years to bowel cancer, takes a break from his Sydney medical practice and tours Europe and England only to be caught up with the Covid 19 virus epidemic and the resultant travel restrictions inter country. To return home, he is lucky to be offered a passage on a cargo vessel En-route to Fremantle/Perth Western Australia. The ship is hijacked by Indonesian pirates, cargo stolen, and the ship released, sailing onto its destination Fremantle. Enforced into a 14-day hibernation period, he endures the confinement, then meets his daughter and together they plan a driving trip to Darwin that should if correctly timed, allow him to eventually cross borders to return to his Sydney home. After encountering a nasty road accident, Dan meets the crew of a Royal Flying Doctor aircraft who as an urgent fill-in, seek his expertise at least over the next few weeks. He meets the Senior Sister Jenny Cousins, and together they save lives and begin to enjoy each other''s company. It is then Dans old enemy finds him and attempts to complete his life''s desire; to injure Dan in the same way Dan did to him. Shot him in the knee, all those years ago. This is Liu Wei Cong, ex Indonesian Army now drug distributer and money launderer. He has amongst his clients list, General Peng Fu of the Chinese Republican Army, Councillor and one of ten, sitting on China''s highest court. The business these two do is in big numbers, with the General believed to be responsible for the original spreading of Covirus 19, via international travellers, and various airport terminals. The plot is fast moving, but believable, and if not rushed by skim reading, an enjoyable read should be experienced.

Dangerous Times
Born in Perth, Western Australia, during World War 2 to an English-born mother and a fourth-generation Sydney-based Engineer father. Kevin was introduced to flying at an incredibly early age, with his father teaching flying to recruits during the war period. They resided in a close city above average suburb where he was educated and enjoyed a wide range of sporting activities, archery, cricket, and baseball in which he represented the State. His friends introduced him to car racing, horse sports, and surf lifesaving so that by the age he reached eighteen. He had acquired a very wide education. This led him to a real estate occupation where he experienced domestic building, valuation, and a wide field of property sales, development, and consultancy. Kevin became the City Valuer of Perth, then moved on to an agency partnership and remarkably high-value property, industrial, city leasing, and sporting complexes, continuing to mines, towns, and interstate commercial development. He was a court witness on many occasions acting for Local, State, and Federal government agencies, and later towards retirement, concluded with the assessment of major complexes for insurance purposes. Along the way, Kevin was appointed President of the local progress association, Captain initially, then President of a major golf club, President of the Institute of Valuers WA division, the Australian Institute for several years, Captain of a prestigious yacht club. He was appointed to several business boards such as the land valuation tribunal, town planning, and compensation appeal boards. On retirement, the computer talked. He began writing a fantasy trilogy, something that had been buzzing around in his head, gradually expanding and growing with newly discovered events since the time he was an adolescent. That completed, he found it necessary to keep writing, and now on his seventh book (the last three being crime thrillers), agrees he will keep writing till all his days are done. He says the enjoyment he gains from writing is immense and just hopes the readers on turning the final page, smile and say, ah! Yes! That was a worthwhile experience.

Take a look from a Police Officer who was well liked by the public, made it to retirement age, but was cast aside by the "system" of Law Enforcement that didn't necessarily agree publicly with the "Community Policing" style they all praise to your face.

How Did You Get To Be Mexican

release date: Jun 21, 2010
How Did You Get To Be Mexican
During an interview for a faculty position, a senior professor asked Kevin Johnson bluntly, "How did you get to be a Mexican?" And, a young woman at a Harvard Law School dinner party inquired, "Are you one of those people whose high school friends are all dead from gangs and stuff?" The son of a Mexican American mother and an Anglo father, Professor Johnson has spent his life in the borderlands between racial identities. In this insightful book, he uses his experiences as a mixed Latino Anglo to examine issues of diversity, assimilation, race relations, and affirmative action in the contemporary United States. Johnson also grew up in the borderlands between classes. He spent his childhood with his mother, first on welfare and then with a racist working-class stepfather. As an adolescent, he moved to his father''s home in a predominantly upper-middle-class suburb. His educational experiences too extend from a racially mixed elementary school to an all-white high school, and from Berkeley to Harvard Law School. From this vantage point, he analyzes the intersection of race and class in the United States. This book looks not just at the question "Who is a Latino?" but also at the question of where persons of mixed Anglo-Latino heritage fit into the racial dynamics of the United States. Professor Johnson''s mother was an ardent assimilationist who classified herself as "Spanish"; her failure to become a part o f middle America led her into depression and eventually mental illness. Her son has woven not just her experiences and his own, but also those of friends and relatives, into a complex and moving story of one white/brown man''s search for identity.
