What You Think You Know About Football is Wrong

release date: Oct 31, 2019
What You Think You Know About Football is Wrong
Our view of football will never be the same again... Written by a world-respected football historian, this football history/gift title reveals the global game''s greatest myths and untruths. Football has been completely mythologized and many of the things football fans think they know about football and its history turn out not to be true. We want to believe the myths, and so they become accepted. So much football writing is not properly researched, and so the myths get repeated... again and again and again. Backed up by the highest level of academic research yet written in an accessible, mass-market style, the book will explore the truth behind many accepted myths. For example, did you know: - The Germans took football to Brazil, not the English - Rugby and not football could quite easily have been the world''s leading sport - There are gay professional players ....and always have been! - Goalkeepers should not dive for penalties - Football hooliganism did not begin in England - Shirt colours do make a difference - Cambridge and not Sheffield is the home of the oldest football club in the world - Arsenal should not be in the Premier League... they cheated to be there - The Dynamo Kiev team were not executed after beating a German SS team in 1941 - England did not win the World Cup fairly in 1966 ... but not in the way you think! Written by Kevin Moore, the founding director of the National Football Museum (the world''s leading football museum), this thoroughly researched and authoritative book will debunk more than 50 of the greatest myths surrounding football.

How Best to ‘Go On’? Prospects for a ‘Modern Synthesis’ in the Sciences of Mind

release date: Aug 08, 2016
How Best to ‘Go On’? Prospects for a ‘Modern Synthesis’ in the Sciences of Mind
Psychology straddles areas from the biological to the social and cultural. Within that vast range, there have been recent explosions of interest in neuropsychology, genetics and epigenetics, and the evolutionary bases of mindedness. Correspondingly, there have been conceptual innovations and new empirical evidence in relation to the embodied, social and discursive processes supporting mind and personhood. Simultaneously, awareness of developmental processes and their dynamic interweaving of genetic, physiological, neurological, social and cultural elements has also increased. Might such developments help ‘connect the dots’ between diverse aspects of mindedness and the contexts within which it arises? Whilst it seems clear that mind is co-constituted of both biological and socio-cultural processes, how might we bring these disparate realms of knowledge together? In a number of these areas, suggestive integrative possibilities have been explored (e.g., predictive processing, embodied and situated cognition, dynamic developmental systems theory) and insights such as a focus on action, ‘knowledge as skills’, embeddedness and connectivity have been pursued across a range of disciplines. This edited collection of articles bring together such possibilities – and others - in the same forum in order to provide an opportunity to re-visit a recurring discussion within theoretical psychology: The claimed lack of - and potential for - theoretical synthesis and unity. While the chapters range over a number of areas of research, this collection is focused on current prospects for conceptual synthesis within - or convergence of research between - aspects of mind and mindedness. As is clear from the contributions, it highlights integrative conceptual proposals that emphasize action-orientation, process, embeddedness and connectivity – especially between explanatory ‘levels’. Beyond specific proposals for integration, several of the contributions explicitly or implicitly expose broader questions about the purpose of psychological research, the epistemological and ontological commitments required, and the relevant social, political and economic contexts within which such research is performed. This is perhaps inevitable since any aim for synthesis of various understandings of mind will - or should - lead to consideration of the general implications, beyond the ‘science’, that follow from an integrated account of mind and mindedness. Whether or not the contributions in this volume provide insights into profitable paths towards greater theoretical synthesis in the sciences of mind or, alternatively, provide grist for the mill of renewed skepticism over the potential or even desirability of such synthesis is unpredictable. Whichever the outcome, we feel sure that they will help provoke future productive research in, and thinking about, the sciences of mind. Kevin Moore and John Cromby Associate Guest Editors

Integrative Medicine for Vulnerable Populations

release date: Nov 01, 2019
Integrative Medicine for Vulnerable Populations
This first-of-its-kind title addresses the failures of an often fragmented healthcare system in managing vulnerable patients with multiple, chronic, co-morbid conditions -- patients who are frequently unresponsive to the methods and approaches used to treat other patients with conditions that are less complicated. The book emphasizes a holistic evaluation to patient care that looks at the whole patient, providing comprehensive formulations that describe the interacting problems that afflict the patient, including elements that are barriers to effective treatment of active medical problems and barriers to recovery. The book begins by defining integrated care, discussing the types of patients who benefit from this approach and some of the models of care, including financing, barriers to acceptance, and advocacy for patients. The second section discusses the structural elements of integrated care, including the building of a team approach, issues of leadership, and role definition, as well as the authors’ experiences in overcoming some of the problems. In the remaining sections, the book discusses major complicating features of the patients seen in integrative care settings, including a description of the kinds of problems, a model for formulation of patient cases, and successful approaches to treatment of these problems. Finally, some of the real-world applications where integrative care provides better outcomes is covered, including in terms of addictions, medically complex patients, and chronic pain patients. Integrative Medicine for Vulnerable Populations - A Clinical Guide to Working with Chronic and Comorbid Medical Disease, Mental Illness, and Addiction is a major contribution to the clinical literature and will be of great interest to health care professionals, administrators, policy stakeholders, and even interested patients and patient advocates.

Untrumpable

Untrumpable
One of the most important questions upon which man will ever be forced to wager is this:given our uncertainty about the afterlife, so what? In this book, Moore argues that our uncertainty about the afterlife should matter to us greatly, if we are wise. And in order to complete the failed task that Blaise Pascal initiated, the provision of a sound and valid argument about how to wager on the afterlife under uncertainty, Moore argues for and defends the following new argument. In brief: 1. Foolishness occurs under the following conditions: (a) when one is aware of a severe threat to his or her most relevant interest, (b) when one knows how to minimize the risks to such an interest against such a threat and (c) when, in the face of such a threat-awareness, one flouts his or her risk minimization know-how, opting to hope solely in luck’s favor. 2.The possibility of a just and severely retributive afterlife counts as a real and severe threat to our most relevant interests (and it is the only sort of afterlife possibility that does so). 3. Despite our uncertainty about the afterlife, we know how to minimize our risks against such a threat. 4. Therefore, given both that we are aware of such a severe threat to our most relevant interest and that we know how to minimize our risks to such, whenever we choose not to live in accordance with such know-how we are acting foolishly. After carefully building his case for this conclusion, Moore lays out its implications, responds to many foreseeable objections and, in the final chapter, closes with a fitting and uncommon defense of Christianity as a beautiful and wise hope.

Beyond Salsa Bass

release date: Mar 09, 2012
Beyond Salsa Bass
Volume 6 of Beyond Salsa Bass begins our 4-volume study of the style of Alain Pérez - the composer of La sandunguita, Salsa timba y amor, and Amigo Juan. Pérez is one of the most talented bassists, composers and arrangers of modern Cuban music. He shared a very unique musical chemistry with Issac Delgado and pianist Melón Lewis, the subject of Volumes 6-9 of Beyond Salsa Piano. The bass series follows the piano series exactly, covering the same songs, now from the perspective of the bassist. In addition to transcribing the notes, we also transcribe the percussive sounds that he uses to create his funky style. Each musical example is provided in 16th note notation, 8th note notion and bass tablature. There are corresponding audio and video products for each volume.

God, Conceivability, and Evil

release date: Feb 04, 2017
God, Conceivability, and Evil
Perhaps you’ve heard that Alvin Plantinga resolved the logical problem of evil decades ago and that even most atheists agree. But, what if you aren’t most folks? What if you find yourself in that minority of folks who still worry about the compatibility of God and evil? What if you question Plantinga’s dubious suggestion that God’s desire for moral good is a good enough reason for Him to allow evil (if, as it turned out, He couldn’t get any moral good without allowing at least some evil)? What is the resolve for worries such as these? God, Conceivability, and Evil is about resolving the logical problem of evil for the rest of us. And, importantly, it is about doing so in a way that allows us to avoid BS-ing ourselves and others in the process. The solution that Moore defends to the logical problem of evil, in view of his worries about Plantinga’s Free Will Defense, is philosophically interesting, methodologically intuitive, theologically consistent and apologetically pertinent.
