Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard
Sampath Chawla was born in a time of drought that ended with a vengeance the night of his birth. All signs being auspicious, the villagers triumphantly assured Sampath''s proud parents that their son was destined for greatness. Twenty years of failure later, that unfortunately does not appear to be the case. A sullen government worker, Sampath is inspired only when in search of a quiet place to take his nap. "But the world is round," his grandmother says. "Wait and see! Even if it appears he is going downhill, he will come up the other side. Yes, on top of the world. He is just taking a longer route." No one believes her until, one day, Sampath climbs into a guava tree and becomes unintentionally famous as a holy man, setting off a series of events that spin increasingly out of control. A delightfully sweet comic novel that ends in a raucous bang, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard is as surprising and entertaining as it is beautifully wrought.

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny
BOOKER PRIZE LONGLIST • A spellbinding story of two young people whose fates intersect and diverge across continents and years—an epic of love and family, India and America, tradition and modernity, by the Booker Prize–winning author of The Inheritance of Loss “A spectacular literary achievement. I wanted to pack a little suitcase and stay inside this book forever.”—Ann Patchett “A novel so wonderful, when I got to the last page, I turned to the first and began again.”—Sandra Cisneros “Devastating, lyrical, and deeply romantic . . . an unmitigated joy to read.”—Khaled Hosseini “A grand and stirring love story, written in exquisite prose.”—Namwali Serpell “Magnificent . . . A masterpiece.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review “A sweeping page-turner, The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny is a kind of Romeo and Juliet story for a modern, globalized age.”—Publishers Weekly (Top 10 New Fall Books) One of Book Riot’s Three Most Anticipated Books of the Fall When Sonia and Sunny first glimpse each other on an overnight train, they are immediately captivated yet also embarrassed by the fact that their grandparents had once tried to matchmake them, a clumsy meddling that served only to drive Sonia and Sunny apart. Sonia, an aspiring novelist who recently completed her studies in the snowy mountains of Vermont, has returned to her family in India. She fears that she is haunted by a dark spell cast by an artist to whom she had once turned for intimacy and inspiration. Sunny, a struggling journalist resettled in New York City, is attempting to flee his imperious mother and the violence of his warring clan. Uncertain of their future, Sonia and Sunny embark on a search for happiness together as they confront the many alienations of our modern world. The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny is the sweeping tale of two young people navigating the many forces that shape their lives: country, class, race, history, and the complicated bonds that link one generation to the next. A love story, a family saga, and a rich novel of ideas, it is the most ambitious and accomplished work yet by one of our greatest novelists.

EL LEGADO DE LA PERDIDA

release date: Jul 26, 2007

Intermediate Deduction Problems

Intermediate Deduction Problems
The problems in this book are based on addition circuits. However, the problems have been designed to be about deduction rather than simple addition. The highly interconnected addition circuit problems from the second grade addition book have been presented as deduction problems. The difficulty level for these problems are much higher and meant for students in Middle School, while taking courses on Pre-algebra. All the problems are presented in a visual manner, using interconnected circuits. These circuits introduce notions of adding in series as well as parallel. The problems also require ability to order the sequence of additions among the circuit nodes. Such problems can help develop visual and spatial skills. Many of the problems in this book are circuit representations for generating algebraic functions such as [n!], n DEGREES2, n DEGREES3, 2 DEGREESn, and so on. Although intimidating at first sight, these problems can be solved by forming systems of linear equations. The problems in this book have been limited to single variable expressions. The deduction problems have a simple format. The final or intermediate values based on addition of intermediate circuit nodes are provided for each problem. The goal is to find all the values based on addition of the inputs. A few solved examples using algebraic expressions are provided in the beginning for illustration purposes. These problems can also be solved visual
