New Releases by L Frank Baum

The volume begins with an historical overview written by Baum himself, in which he notes that the first use of the name "Mother Goose" was by the great French author of fantasies, Charles Perrault -- the inventor of Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Puss in Boots. Each tale begins with the nursery rhyme, and then a tale that illustrates the rhyme follows -- told in Baum's charming, natural fashion. Mother Goose in Prose is a delight for children of all ages. The book's last selection features a girl named Dorothy who can talk to animals — an anticipation of the Oz books. When Baum later included this story in his Juvenile Speaker (1910) and The Snuggle Tales (1916–17), he changed the girl's name to Doris, to avoid confusing her with Dorothy Gale.

Little did Cap'n Bill realize his words would start him upon the greatest and most perilous adventure of his life -- along with the little sea-loving girl Mayre, whom he nicknamed Trot.

In The Sea Fairies, the famous author of the Oz books takes us on an adventure to a fairyland -- one to be found deep below the rolling waves of the ocean!

Note: this isn't generally considered an Oz book, and you'd be hard pressed to find a mention of Oz in these pages. But in later books Baum wrote characters from this and other books into his Oz titles -- which makes these Oz series books, after a fashion.

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is the fourth book of the series. An earthquake splits open the earth under Dorothy, and she, her kitten Eureka, her cousin Zeb, and a horse named Jim fall into a city of glass. They are joined by the Wizard of Oz and nine piglets, and must wander through dangerous lands trying to find their way home.

In their journeys, they must cope with invisible bears, flying gargoyles, and a den of young dragons. But rescue, and a return to the Emerald City, are not the end of Dorothy's troubles.

The Emerald City of Oz is the fifth book of the series. Oz is in trouble. The evil Nome King is determined to recover the Magic Belt from Ozma, ruler of Oz. He plans to tunnel under the Deadly Desert that surrounds Oz, to emerge in the Emerald City and lay waste to it and the land around it.

Meanwhile, Dorothy has moved to Oz with her Uncle Henry and Auntie Em after life got hard in Kansas. They tour the land, having entertaining adventures, and return to the Emerald City just as the armies of the Nome King are beginning their final assault.
