The Formation of Scholars

release date: Jun 19, 2012
The Formation of Scholars
This groundbreaking book explores the current state of doctoral education in the United States and offers a plan for increasing the effectiveness of doctoral education. Programs must grapple with questions of purpose. The authors examine practices and elements of doctoral programs and show how they can be made more powerful by relying on principles of progressive development, integration, and collaboration. They challenge the traditional apprenticeship model and offer an alternative in which students learn while apprenticing with several faculty members. The authors persuasively argue that creating intellectual community is essential for high-quality graduate education in every department. Knowledge-centered, multigenerational communities foster the development of new ideas and encourage intellectual risk taking.

Music Listening Habits and Psychological Well-being in Young Adults

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Music Listening Habits and Psychological Well-being in Young Adults
Abstract: Music listening is an activity that nearly every young adult engages in. Research on the psychological effects of music listening show varying results. This study’s purpose was to explore possible relationships between young adults’ listening habits and psychological well-being. A survey, completed by 192 young adults between the ages of 18 and 25, was used to identify the participants’ music listening habits, level of psychological well-being, and demographic information. A series of statistical analyses were conducted to determine relationships between several music factors, demographic factors, and psychological well-being. The results of these analyses show that there is a statistically significant positive relationship between young adults’ music listening habits and their psychological well-being. More than any other factor measured, how an individual engaged in music listening determined their level of psychological well-being. In addition, the lyric content of music had a significant relationship to higher or lower psychological well-being. These results suggest that music listening habits and the lyric content of music may have an impact on young adults’ psychological well-being.

Men and Emotions...

release date: Jan 01, 2023
Men and Emotions...
Imagine navigating through an unfamiliar city without any street signs or GPS--the journey would quickly become difficult and chaotic. We would find ourselves frustrated, possibly in danger, ill-at-ease, and probably lost. We would never choose to disregard road signs or forget to use our GPS; this information helps us stay on course. Emotions are our internal GPS that help us navigate our way through the world. Most importantly, they guide our relationships with the people we care about. Sadly, the idea that men who express emotions are weak is deeply embedded in our society. Men and Emotions . . . It''s a Thing is a book that pushes back against the idea that men should not be in tune with or express their emotions. In this practical yet heartfelt book, Laura Jones Swann brings a wealth of information based on her 35 years of experience in the counseling field as well as her academic career. You will gain a deeper understanding of your emotions, as well as learn strategies and tactics to help process them. You will read 29 stories from men who have embraced the power that emotional awareness can offer--power to have agency of action even when anger, hurt, frustration, or surprise emerge from within. Emotional awareness does not equal weakness. This book is for men (and all people!) who would like to face life''s challenges from a place of strength, wisdom, and compassion--from a place of more complete self-awareness.

Dan Fogelberg's The Innocent Age

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Dan Fogelberg's The Innocent Age
In a 1981 New York Times review of Dan Fogelberg''s The Innocent Age, Stephen Holden claimed that the album''s lyrics were, "perhaps the most spectacular example of artistic overreaching that the singer/songwriter genre has produced.&" Other critics at the time also disdained the album as too serious or ambitious (Pond; Browning). Holden and his contemporaries clearly did not foresee the album''s subsequent commercial and financial success nor its value as musical art. Through music-text analysis and considerations of historical context, I argue that The Innocent Age was not only a commercial success but also worthy of recognition as an artistic achievement, and that it is indeed a song cycle. This thesis will inform issues related to music-text analysis and analytical methods drawn from those of concept albums and song cycles. Sources for this thesis include album reviews, Of Time and the River by Thomas Wolfe, the score, recordings, published interviews, survey data, and other secondary sources.

The Oregon Trail Is Still Alive

release date: Jan 01, 1997
The Oregon Trail Is Still Alive
This book is three stories combined to tell the last one. The first is a diary of Nathaniel Myer, which begins March 21, 1853, that takes the Myer family on their five & one half months of covered wagon adventure, ending in Oregon. The second is a diary covering the authors'' three week RV caravan trek along the Oregon Trail. The third is a story based upon Nathaniel Myer''s diary. Nathaniel was age 68, his wife, Mary, 61; their offspring ranging from age 38 to 4 months. Included were seven hired hands, five teams of oxen, two horse teams, & eighty head of cattle. Our reason for joining the caravan, at Independence, Missouri, was to experience the Oregon Trail as closely as practical. We wanted to relate to the experiences of thousands of emigrants who traveled two thousand miles over the trails to Oregon, now well marked with posts & monuments. Most of the time we were on back roads, with many unpaved & dusty! Many reference books, diaries, & maps are available. The book ends with a fascinating story of the life of a pioneer family on their wagon train journey to Oregon.

Data Experiences

Data Experiences
For the past twenty years, the data visualization movement has reworked the way we engage with information. It has brought fresh excitement to researchers and reached broad audiences. But what comes next for data? I seek to create example "Data Experiences" that will contribute to developing new spaces of information engagement. Using data from Silent Spring Institute''s environmental health studies as a test case, I explore Data Experiences that are immersive, interactive, and aesthetic. Environmental health datasets are ideal for this application as they are highly relevant to the general population and have appropriate complexity. Dressed in Data will focus on the experience of an individual with her/his own environmental health data while BigBarChart focuses on the experience of the community with the overall dataset. Both projects seek to present opportunities for nontraditional learning, community relevance, and social impact.

Exploring Attitude Transformation

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Exploring Attitude Transformation
The purpose of this systematic grounded theory study was to explore the process of change in teacher attitudes toward including Roma (Gypsy) students in non-segregated schools in Romania. The theories guiding this study included Mezirow''s (1991, 2000) theory of transformation, Gay''s (2002, 2013) theory of culturally responsive teaching, and Bandura''s (1977, 1997) theory of self-efficacy. These three theories guided this research inquiry into how attitudes change, how teacher attitudes affect beliefs and actions, and how self-efficacy affects teacher attitudes. This study sought to answer the following questions: What is the process of transforming Romanian teacher attitudes toward including Roma students? What factors influence attitude change of Romanian teachers toward the Roma? How do Romanian teachers use their transformed attitudes in working with Roma students? What role does self-efficacy play in developing Romanian teacher attitudes toward Roma students? Interviews, observations, and timelines of 23 current teachers took place in Romania. The Model of Transformation: Awakening to Empowering was constructed to show the process of transformation that was revealed during this study. The greatest influences discovered for affecting attitude change were personal reflection, childhood experiences, role models, and ongoing education courses. Teachers who chose to see their classroom as a familial unit, becoming like a foster parent for their students, and incorporated new teaching strategies, worked most successfully with their Roma students. Based on the data, self-efficacy was important for empowering the teachers and helping them to empower others in working with the Roma.
