The Serpent Symbol in the Ancient Near East

release date: Nov 12, 2001
The Serpent Symbol in the Ancient Near East
The serpent symbol has been a part of western culture since antiquity. Throughout time, it has been misunderstood and misrepresented. The Serpent Symbol in the Ancient Near East is the first comparative study of the origins of the serpent symbol from its first attestations in Dravidian South India through Mesopotamia and the Ancient Near East including, Egypt, Classical Greece, and as far west as ancient Carthage. The role of the serpent as the agent of life, death, and healing is demonstrated in the various cultures both individually and in combination, in order to clearly understand the symbol.

Trabajar con las emociones en psicoterapia

release date: Dec 01, 1999

Neuromorphic Systems

release date: Jan 01, 1998
Neuromorphic Systems
Neuromorphic systems are implementations in silicon of sensory and neural systems whose architecture and design are based on neurobiology. This growing area proffers exciting possibilities, such as sensory systems that can compete with human senses and pattern recognition systems that can run in real time. The area is at the intersection of neurophysiology, computer science and electrical engineering. This book brings together recent developments in Europe and the US, so that researchers in both academia and industry can find out about the state of the art. As well as elementary material on what neuromorphic systems are and why they are growing in importance, the book contains details of current work. Them are articles on aspects of implementing sensory neuromorphic systems, as well as articles on neuromorphic hardware.

Emotion in Psychotherapy

release date: Feb 16, 1990
Emotion in Psychotherapy
The study of psychotherapy has often been limited to the ways in which cognitive and behavioral processes promote personal change. Introducing a ground breaking perspective, Greenberg and Safran''s compelling new work argues that the presently-felt experience of emotional material in therapy forms a vital underpinning in the generation of change. By including emotion as a psychotherapeutic catalyst, the book offers a more complete and encompassing approach to the process of psychotherapy than has ever before been available. EMOTION IN PSYCHOTHERAPY draws from the literature of both clinical and experimental psychology to provide a critical review of theory and research on the role of emotion in the process of change. Providing a general theoretical framework for understanding the impact of affect in therapy, this unique volume describes specific change events in which emotions enhance the achievement of therapeutic goals. Case examples and extensive transcripts vividly portray a variety of affective modes--such as completing emotional expression, accessing previously unacknowledged feelings, and restructuring emotions--and illustrate in clear, practical terms how certain processes apply to particular patient problems. Moving beyond the standard approaches to therapy, this volume offers an integrated approach that carefully consider''s the client''s state in the session that must be amenable to intervention as well as any given intervention and its resulting changes. Its attention to both the theoretical and practical considerations of implementing a balanced psychotherapeutic approach--combining behavioral, cognitive, and affective modes--makes this an invaluable volume for practitioners and researchers of all orientations. The book will be of particular interest to clinicians seeking integrative approaches to psychotherapy, and to academic psychologists concerned with expanding the paradigm of cognitive psychology.

Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples

release date: Oct 07, 1988
Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples
This influential volume provides a comprehensive introduction to emotionally focused therapy (EFT): its theoretical foundations, techniques, and clinical practice. EFT is a structured approach to couple therapy that integrates intrapsychic and interpersonal perspectives to help couples create new, more satisfying interactional patterns. Since the original publication of this book, EFT has been implemented and tested with growing numbers of couples in a wide range of settings. The authors, who codeveloped the approach, illuminate the power of emotional experience in relationships and in the process of therapeutic change. The book is richly illustrated with case examples and session transcripts.

Bred In The Bone

Bred In The Bone
Bred In The Bone By Leslie S. Talley In this sequel to Make Old Bones Otis, Clarice, and Miss Letty act as exchange innkeepers at Castle Keep in St. Augustine, Florida. Castle Keep, built of timbers from a shipwreck, has a disturbing history which carries over to the present. Recently a series of break-ins by a homeless man and the sound of chains dragging in the attic complicate matters. Miss Letty and Clarice visit the original plantation site where Clarice discovers a skeleton in the icehouse. In addition, they find the burned body of the homeless man in a dragon sculpture, causing them to make connections among disparate events separated by over a century. Add to the mix a psychic, an African-American journalism student, the Donner wedding party, Florida Gators, two snobbish Southerners, father and son mural painters, an obstreperous Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Charles Dickens, and an obnoxious, but, unwittingly, helpful twelve-year-old named Beddington.

The Closer The Bone

The Closer The Bone
The Closer the Bone The Closer the Bone, the third adventure of sleuths Clarice Campion and Miss Letty, finds Clarice, husband Otis, and Miss Letty, former star of the Silent Screen, acting as exchange innkeepers at Flanagan’s Guest House in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. From the first they are locked between two feuding families, the Quinns and the Donovans. Seamus Quinn is found stabbed and bleeding out on Flanagan’s doorstep although the trail of blood leads from the Donovans’. Assorted disparate winter boarders add fuel of their own. Had Seamus tried to blackmail someone? Why do people keep disappearing and reappearing at Flanagan’s? And why does Fergus Flanagan return abruptly from his odyssey in Florida? What is he hiding? And who puts foxglove in his tea? Clarice and Miss Letty’s search for answers leads them to a convent in Cork, a tinker camp on the Beara Peninsula, and Athlone, home of two of their boarders. All in all they consult T.D. Doyle, the representative for Bray; an Anglican vicar; and a tabloid journalist. But the murderer has plans for Clarice: an ‘accidental’ fall onto the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) tracks which run behind Flanagan’s. Will Clarice escape and reveal secrets that will rock Ireland to its core? Fans of Make Old Bones and Bred in the Bone won’t want to miss this latest installment in the series.
