I 1914, under 1. verdenskrig, reddet Harry Colebourn, som var veterinær for hestene til soldatene, en liten svartbjørnunge. Han kalte bjørnen for Winnie fordi han selv kom fra en liten by som het Winnipeg. Lenge var Winnie sammen med soldatene, men til slutt måtte veterinæren Harry overlate den lille svartbjørnen til de andre. Winnie fikk et nytt hjem, og en av dem som ble veldig glad i bjørnen, var sønnen til forfatteren A.A. Milne.
