Cake From Lucie

release date: Apr 14, 2026
Cake From Lucie
Inventive, French-inspired dessert recipes from the founder of the beloved New York City bakery, From Lucie. “I dare you to page through Lucie’s book and not feel a flutter of joy. These are desserts to make you dream.”—Dorie Greenspan, James Beard Award–winning author of Dorie’s Anytime Cakes Lucie Franc de Ferriere is the owner and head baker at From Lucie, a small bakery in the East Village known for its whimsical baked goods adorned with fresh flowers. Born and raised in Southern France, Lucie grew up baking cakes with her mother at the family''s farm and bed-and-breakfast in their 165-year-old chateau, and after moving to New York City, she became homesick and turned to baking for a taste of home. Eventually, Lucie’s baked goods became so popular at café pop-ups that she decided to take a leap of faith and open her own bakery. Now in Cake From Lucie, Lucie invites home bakers to join her in creating gorgeously imperfect treats in her signature style, from easy everyday recipes to more intricate showstoppers. Lucie’s creations are less sweet than American-style baked goods, allowing her subtle and unique flavor combinations to shine. Indulge in a moist Zucchini Honey Mascarpone Cake that highlights the tastes of summer, or a layered Chamomile Cake with Whipped Cream and Strawberry Sumac Jam that beautifully melds citrus and herbal notes. For an effortless bake, try Lucie’s Blueberry Fennel Loaf, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, turn to her Blood Orange Olive Oil Princess Cake. Her popular Salted Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies are the ultimate afternoon treat, and a Tiramisu Charlotte will wow at your next dinner party. With transportive photography from Lucie’s farm and personal stories woven throughout, Cake From Lucie captures the charm of the French countryside and the buzz of New York City while relaying the secrets for Lucie’s beautiful and memorable desserts.

How the Hell Did I Not Know That?

release date: Aug 26, 2025
How the Hell Did I Not Know That?
After quitting her job with an awkward text to her boss, Lucie Frost planned to live out her early retirement fantasy. Except she was lost, an empty nester with no job, no structure, no identity, and no clear purpose. Everything changed after she binge-watched the television program 90 Day Fiancé one day, which led to a stream of answers to her question about midlife stagnation: What do we do with our lives when our jobs or children are no longer making those decisions for us? Her trivia-filled memoir, How the Hell Did I Not Know That?, follows the first year of Frost’s postretirement era, a year when curiosity pulled her off the couch and into a world where she discovered how to build a fulfilling life from the smallest of wonders—things like how to unboil an egg with urine (but why, oh why?), where the vice president of the United States lives (something we should know?), and why the sky is blue (wait, didn’t we learn that in third grade?). How the Hell Did I Not Know That? is a witty and honest companion, a girlfriend, if you will, for women in midlife who are struggling to find their place in the world, who are concerned about misogyny, climate change, and the industrial prison complex, just not while watching the latest episode of The Bachelor. Frost shows us that women “of a certain age” need to take themselves seriously while remembering to laugh at inappropriate things and that they can find meaning in life by relying on the power of curiosity.

Cyber Sovereignty

release date: Jun 11, 2024
Cyber Sovereignty
Governments across the globe find themselves in an exploratory phase as they probe the limits of their sovereignty in the cyber domain. Cyberspace is a singular environment that is forcing states to adjust their behavior to fit a new arena beyond the four traditional domains (air, sea, space, and land) to which the classic understanding of state sovereignty applies. According to Lucie Kadlecová, governments must implement a more adaptive approach to keep up with rapid developments and innovations in cyberspace in order to truly retain their sovereignty. This requires understanding the concept of sovereignty in a more creative and flexible manner. Kadlecová argues that the existence of sovereignty in cyberspace is the latest remarkable stage in the evolution of this concept. Through a close study of the most advanced transatlantic cases of state sovereignty in cyberspace—the Netherlands, the US, Estonia, and Turkey—Cyber Sovereignty reveals how states have pursued new methods and tactics to fuel the distribution of authority and control in the cyber field, imaginatively combining modern technologies with legal frameworks. In times of booming competition over cyber governance between democracies and authoritarian regimes worldwide, cyber sovereignty is a major topic of interest, and concern, for the international community.

Passionate Copying in Late Medieval Bohemia

Passionate Copying in Late Medieval Bohemia
This book presents a detailed case study of Crux de Telcz (1434–1504), illustrating the complexity of the manuscript culture of the second half of the 15th century. The scholar reconstructs Crux’s biography using more than 150 colophons and notes, and analyzes his role as an author, translator, complier, glossator and primarily as a scribe. For comparison, Kimberly Rivers’ study on the Würzburg Franciscan scribe Johannes Sintram († 1450) is included in the book. The most conspicuous feature of the examined late medieval manuscript culture is the unprecedented number of scribe’s paratexts (contents, indexes, explanatory notes, references, identification of sources and others), accompanied by a no less unprecedented number of errors, confusions, obscurities and incoherencies.ufeff First volume of the Prague Medieval Studies (PRAMS) series.

Trans Sex

release date: May 23, 2021
Trans Sex
Finalist, 2022 Lambda Literary Awards (Trans-Non-fiction Category) Winner, of the 2022 AASECT Book Awards (Book for Sexuality Professionals) Winner of the 2023 SSTAR Consumer Book Award! Despite the increasing visibility of trans and non-binary folx in media, political representation, and popular culture, their sexual lives and erotic embodiments are woefully under-attended-to in both scholarship and clinical practice. The aim of this book is to equip providers with both conceptual frameworks and concrete tools for better engaging their trans, non-binary, and gender expansive clients in pleasure-centered discussions of sexual health. Challenging the dominant images of trans sexualities that appear in the existing literature, such as an emphasis on avoiding gender dysphoria, the preservation of sexual function, or on sexual losses that may arise as a result of transition pathways, Trans Sex offers a pleasure-positive approach to working with trans clients. Providing concrete clinical practices and practical activities that utilize social justice, intersectional trans feminism, and radical queer theory as key conceptual frameworks, this groundbreaking text is designed to be accessible to a wide range of providers. This book draws on Fielding’s experiences as both a trans client/patient and as a therapist to shift and expand the conversation and includes contributions from other trans and non-binary providers working at the intersection of gender-affirmative care and sexuality. Trans Sex seeks to move trans sexualities from the margins of gender-affirmative clinical practice, to center pleasure, and to spark creativity and empathic attunement within the client-provider relationship. Whether they be mental health or medical providers, trainees, or seasoned practitioners in gender-affirmative work or sexualities, readers will be able harness creative strategies to enhance their practice and become more imaginative providers.

Eschatology in the Work of Jan Hus

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Eschatology in the Work of Jan Hus
This study provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of Hus''s ideas on the last things as they are presented in both his work and life. It examines the content and language of his works, particularly his Latin sermons and correspondence, from a literary-historical perspective. It explores general eschatology (Antichrist, purgatory, heaven and hell), as well as its intertwining with the Last Things that Jan Hus experienced personally in his struggle against Antichrist. Thus, the reader will learn not only about Hus''s official ideas, but also about his intimate thoughts contained in correspondence written during his exile and even as he was in prison awaiting death. The book also presents Hus''s eschatology in the broader context of Church reform. It clarifies how Hus''s eschatology developed from its beginnings up to his death, and takes into account the writings of other thinkers whose ideas are connected to Hus''s eschatology, such as John Wycliffe, Mili? of Krom??i, Mat?j of Janov, and Nicholas of Dresden. The book also features an introductory prolegomena on Hus''s life and work and early reform eschatology, which describes not only relevant Czech influences on Hus''s eschatology (e.g. university theology, social-political factors, the Czech preaching tradition), but also European influences (e.g. Peter Lombard, heterodox doctrines).

The Age of the Efendiyya

release date: Sep 18, 2017
The Age of the Efendiyya
In colonial-era Egypt, a new social category of "modern men" emerged, the efendiyya. Working as bureaucrats, teachers, journalists, free professionals, and public intellectuals, the efendiyya represented the new middle class elite. They were the experts who drafted and carried out the state''s modernisation policies, and the makers as well as majority consumers of modern forms of politics and national culture. As simultaneously "authentic" and "modern", they assumed a key political role in the anti-colonial movement and in the building of a modern state both before and after the revolution of 1952. Lucie Ryzova explores where these self-consciously modern men came from, and how they came to be such major figures, by examining multiple social, cultural, and institutional contexts. These contexts include the social strategies pursued by "traditional" households responding to new opportunities for social mobility; modern schools as vehicles for new forms of knowledge dissemination, which had the potential to redefine social authority; but also include new forms of youth culture, student rituals, peer networks, and urban popular culture. The most common modes of self-expression among the effendiyya were through politics and writing (either literature or autobiography). This articulated an efendi culture imbued with a sense of mission, duty, and entitlement, and defined the ways in which their social experiences played into the making of modern Egyptian culture and politics.

Hard Feelings
We''re supposed to be having a party. It''s s''posed to be fun. This is my house, and when I say everybody have fun, then everybody have fun. Thatcher''s Britain – Brixton, 1981. As tensions mount on the streets, in the safety of their home, a group of Oxford University graduates barely notice what''s happening on the streets outside as police and rioters clash, shops are looted, and buildings are set on fire. In both worlds there is a fight for rights... a fight for respect ... a fight for control. Who will win? Who will lose? Who will make the strongest cocktail? And when the dust finally settles the question remains... Will things ever change? This is the story of how Dr. Werner Prenzlau, and Lucie Spitzer met and fell in love, how they were painfully separated by world events that completely overturned their personal lives, and how against all odds, G-d miraculously brought them back to each other to spend the rest of their years together.

Flavour Science
Recent advances in flavor perception have provided us with an in-depth understanding of the aroma–aroma, aroma–taste and aroma–texture interactions that occur during the consumption of wine. This creates new opportunities for flavor and texture optimization by the selection of starter cultures with specific flavor profiles. In this short chapter, we demonstrate the use of a micro-scale fermentation setting in a real product matrix of beer and wine for the selection of starters which are able to produce the desired target (enhancing or masking) flavor compounds. With this approach, it is possible to selectively optimize your product in a natural and successful way.

The Future of the Public Domain

release date: Jan 01, 2006
The Future of the Public Domain
The presence of a robust public domain is an essential precondition for cultural, social and economic development and for a healthy democratic process. But the public domain is under pressure as a result of the ongoing march towards an information economy. Items of information, which in the `old economy had little or no economic value, such as factual data, personal data, genetic information and pure ideas, have acquired independent economic value in the current information age, and consequently become the object of property rights making the information a tradable commodity. How and to what extent does the commodification of information affect the free flow of information and the integrity of the public domain? Does the freedom of expression and information, guaranteed inter alia in the European Convention on Human Rights, call for active state intervention to `save the public domain? What means both legal and practical are available or might be conceived to guarantee and foster a robust public domain? These were the main questions that were addressed in a major collaborative research project led by the Institute for Information Law of the University of Amsterdam (IViR) in co-operation with the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society (TILT) of Tilburg University, and funded by ITeR, the Dutch National Program for Information Technology and Law. Thirteen contributions from academia worldwide make up the present book, addressing the future of the public domain from a different angle. In addition, all authors were invited to reflect upon the notion and role of the public domain in the context of information law and policy. Should this concept be limited to that of a `negative image of (intellectual) property protection, i.e. all publicly available information not subject to a property right, and therefore freely (i.e. gratis) available, or should a broader approach be taken, e.g. all information available from public sources at affordable cost? Should information policies be aimed at maximizing the public domain or optimizing information flows? To what extent are these aims congruent? This book takes a broader, `information law oriented approach towards the question of preserving the public domain, in which a wide range of interrelated legal questions converge. Issues treated in this book include: Economic analysis of the public domain Fundamental rights analysis of the public domain Impact of the application of technological protection measures and contractual restrictions on the public domain The impact of the expansion of copyright, database right and patent rights on the public domain The impact of the commodification of private data, government information, indigenous knowledge on the public domain The capacity of the Open Source and Creative Commons Movements to preserve the integrity of the public domain The Future of the Public Domain is an important work for all those interested or involved in the regulation of the knowledge economy. Legal scholars, academic and research institutions, corporate counsel, lawyers, government policymakers and regulators all these and more will benefit enormously from the thoughtful and incisive discussions presented here.
