The objective of this book is to analyse the Old Icelandic sagas dealing with the twelfth to fourteenth centuries – the secular contemporary sagas and the bishops’ sagas – from the perspective of cultural memory studies. This approach foregrounds their function as sources of the late medieval Icelanders’ collective identity, shaped by the narrative tradition and the current concerns. It is argued here that the intertextual relations between the Old Icelandic historiographical texts extend beyond the literary level and influence the perception of the past itself. The accounts of events from the settlement to the fourteenth century form a coherent narrative that acknowledges the historical development but accentuates the themes and values that continued to define the collective identity. Within this framework, the book presents a detailed analysis of how this function of the narrative shaped the sagas depicting the time when Iceland was gradually integrated into the Norwegian kingdom. As such, it contributes to a more nuanced understanding of how this culturally significant period of medieval Icelandic history was perceived when the memory of it was still crossing the boundary between common knowledge and foundational history.

To know what life was like for someone in the past, we must read their story in a way that we can understand. Steve Cornish was born in 1887 and killed in action in 1917, one of the millions of victims of the First World War. He was an ordinary man—a son, brother, father and husband who simply lived his life and did what he thought he should. He spent a little over a year as a soldier, and died minutes into his first action. Just one of the millions. Steve left no diaries or personal records, and no substantial family memory. We know him only through official records—birth, immigration, marriage, legal, military, and death. The closest we can get to the man himself is his signature on his enlistment papers and small, grainy photographs. He exists in the middle ground between those for whom much information exists—those considered by their contemporaries and history to have been important—and the countless billions for whom there is no record. His life was, nonetheless, adventurous and rich with personal experience, and he played his part in the grand and humble events of history. Cancer is the leading cause of death in the United States. The improvement of screening procedures and treatments have led to higher survival rates, and consequently to an increased number of individuals who fear that their cancer might come back. Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is defined as the fear, worry, or concern that cancer may come back or progress. FCR has been found to be the number one unmet need of cancer survivors. High levels of FCR are associated with greater psychological distress, impaired functioning, decreased quality of life, and increased medical consultations, psychotropic usage and health-care costs. It is therefore crucial to offer these patients an appropriate and effective treatment. The books first propose a theoretical model of FCR that identifies the five main targets of intervention in this program: 1) cognitive interpretation; 2) behavioural avoidance; 3) cognitive avoidance; 4) reassurance and control seeking; 5) intolerance of uncertainty. Then, each target is discussed and specific cognitive-behavioural therapy strategies are suggested that focus on each of them based on the best available empirical evidence for the treatment of anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety disorder) and cancer-related anxiety. This book will be of interest to clinicians working with cancer patients such as psychologists and other health care providers as well as cancer patients and survivors. Which Latin adjectives and adverbs allow for comparative and superlative forms, and which ones do not? This question may seem trivial to those working with modern languages but is not at all trivial in the case of a dead language such as Latin that has no native speakers and a limited corpus of written texts. This monograph aims to introduce the theme of informal learning. It consists of the theoretical part and the results of research conducted at the Faculty of Education, Palacký University in Olomouc among its master's students – future English teachers and the students of other 3 universities. It attempts to find out how often and how the students use online platforms, applications, websites and social networks in their informal learning and formal education. It describes the differences and similarities between the students' use of online technology for their own supervised and unguided learning and for the purposes of their formal studies. Comparisons in the use of online technology are made with regards to the students' gender and form of studies. The third part consists of the qualitative part of research focused on how future teachers of English have been approaching online technologies throughout their lives, primarily for the sake of informal education. In semi-structured interviews, teacher candidates who study primary and lower-secondary education at the Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc shared their history of using online applications and web pages from their young school age up to the present time. Differences and similarities between the two groups of students are explored, as well as the potential influence of their specific histories with online technologies on how they plan to utilize these in their future careers.

This study provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of Hus''s ideas on the last things as they are presented in both his work and life. It examines the content and language of his works, particularly his Latin sermons and correspondence, from a literary-historical perspective. It explores general eschatology (Antichrist, purgatory, heaven and hell), as well as its intertwining with the Last Things that Jan Hus experienced personally in his struggle against Antichrist. Thus, the reader will learn not only about Hus''s official ideas, but also about his intimate thoughts contained in correspondence written during his exile and even as he was in prison awaiting death. The book also presents Hus''s eschatology in the broader context of Church reform. It clarifies how Hus''s eschatology developed from its beginnings up to his death, and takes into account the writings of other thinkers whose ideas are connected to Hus''s eschatology, such as John Wycliffe, Mili? of Krom??i, Mat?j of Janov, and Nicholas of Dresden. The book also features an introductory prolegomena on Hus''s life and work and early reform eschatology, which describes not only relevant Czech influences on Hus''s eschatology (e.g. university theology, social-political factors, the Czech preaching tradition), but also European influences (e.g. Peter Lombard, heterodox doctrines).

This book explores the “Turkish paradox” – women’s lower representation in local politics than in parliament. By analyzing life stories of 200 female municipal councilors and party representatives, it offers a comprehensive assessment of what makes local politics in Turkey particularly inaccessible to women. It places women’s pathways within the cycles of exclusion, starting by political socialization, going through the candidate recruitment process and continuing after the election. The research presented here brings together gender studies and political sociology and offers novel applications of concepts including intersectionality and biographical availability. It covers all major political parties and diverse local configurations in Turkey, and reveals political strategies of women in conservative parties as well as the reasons behind the exceptionally high representation of women within the pro-Kurdish political parties. In colonial-era Egypt, a new social category of "modern men" emerged, the efendiyya. Working as bureaucrats, teachers, journalists, free professionals, and public intellectuals, the efendiyya represented the new middle class elite. They were the experts who drafted and carried out the state''s modernisation policies, and the makers as well as majority consumers of modern forms of politics and national culture. As simultaneously "authentic" and "modern", they assumed a key political role in the anti-colonial movement and in the building of a modern state both before and after the revolution of 1952. Lucie Ryzova explores where these self-consciously modern men came from, and how they came to be such major figures, by examining multiple social, cultural, and institutional contexts. These contexts include the social strategies pursued by "traditional" households responding to new opportunities for social mobility; modern schools as vehicles for new forms of knowledge dissemination, which had the potential to redefine social authority; but also include new forms of youth culture, student rituals, peer networks, and urban popular culture. The most common modes of self-expression among the effendiyya were through politics and writing (either literature or autobiography). This articulated an efendi culture imbued with a sense of mission, duty, and entitlement, and defined the ways in which their social experiences played into the making of modern Egyptian culture and politics.
