What Happens Here Stays Here?

What Happens Here Stays Here?
Life course theory suggests that an individual''s development is influenced by many factors such as one''s past choices and environment. The twenties are a period of great autonomy for many young people with opportunities to engage in choices with lasting consequences, both positive (e.g., furthering education, volunteering) and negative (e.g., crime, risky sexual behavior, heavy video game use). The current study explored the relationship between behaviors during one''s twenties and indices of adjustment (i.e., life satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and hope) and maladjustment (i.e., poor emotional health and regret) in one''s thirties. Additionally, as factors such as income and biological sex may limit or impact the choices one has available to them or chooses to engage in during this time period, income and biological sex were both tested as moderators. Participants included 4,969 (59% female, 41% male) individuals between the ages of 30 and 35. Employing structural equation modeling, results revealed that choices from emerging adulthood were associated with outcomes during one''s thirties. Specifically, education and volunteering were associated with positive outcomes (i.e., higher life satisfaction, better emotional health, and lower levels of regret); volunteering was also significantly associated with hope and relationship satisfaction. Criminal activity, on the other hand, was associated with negative outcomes (i.e., lower life satisfaction and higher levels of regret). Number of non-committed sexual partners was significantly associated with lower relationship satisfaction and emotional health. This study contributes significantly to the literature on emerging and early adulthood by suggesting that choices made during emerging adulthood impact adjustment or maladjustment during early childhood.

Positive Discipline for Teenagers, Revised 3rd Edition

release date: Aug 14, 2012
Positive Discipline for Teenagers, Revised 3rd Edition
A Positive Approach To Raising Happy, Healthy and Mature Teenagers Adolescence can be a time of great stress and turmoil—not only for kids going through it, but for their parents as well. It’s normal for teens to explore a new sense of freedom and to redefine the ways in which they relate to their parents, and that process can sometimes leave parents feeling powerless, alienated, or excluded from their children’s lives. These effects can be magnified even further in this modern age of social networks, cell phones, and constant digital distraction. This newly revised and updated edition of Positive Discipline for Teenagers shows parents how to build stronger bridges of communication with their children, break the destructive cycles of guilt and blame that occur in parent-teen power struggles, and work toward greater mutual respect with their adolescents. At the core of the Positive Discipline approach is the understanding that teens still need their parents, just in different ways—and by better understanding who their teens really are, parents can learn to encourage both their teens and themselves, and instill good judgment without being judgmental. The methods in this book work to build vital social and life skills through encouragement and empowerment—not punishment. Truly effective parenting is about connection before correction. Over the years, millions of parents have come to trust Jane Nelsen’s classic Positive Discipline series for its consistent, commonsense approach to raising happy, responsible kids. This new edition is filled with proven, effective methods for coping with such parenting challenges as: -Fostering truly honest discussions with your teen -Helping your teen handle the online world -Turning mistakes into opportunities -Keeping your sanity while raising your teen—and making sure your own teenage issues aren’t weighing you down -Teaching your teen how to pursue the goal that make them happy…and a few that make you happy too (like chores) -Making sure you’re on your teen’s side, and that they know that -Avoiding the pitfalls of excessive control and excessive permissiveness

''Do You Have a Sleepy Grandma?''

release date: Jul 26, 2012
''Do You Have a Sleepy Grandma?''
The reason for writing this piece for publication was that I have a Sleepy Grandma. I am also dedicating my book to my Sleepy Grandma Erma Lee Jackson. I felt this would be a fun title for children. This is due, to they may experience the same and can relate to the content. My Grandma went through a sleepy phrase, as she got older and I felt it was a little humorous. Grandma’s do get a little tired. We would start a conversation. I’d look up and she’d be sitting in a chair with her eyes closed and relaxed talking to me. Next thing I knew, she was sleeping in her chair. She was my inspiration!! Thank you Sleepy Grandma.

Seven Steps on the Writer's Path

release date: Jan 01, 2003
Seven Steps on the Writer's Path
"Don''t live with a lover or roommate who doesn''t respect your work," says the short story writer Grace Paley. "Buy time" to write if you have to, she goes on to say. In fact, "borrow to buy time," if you have to. Do anything, in other words, to make it possible for yourself to write. "Write what will stop your breath if you don''t write," Paley says. In other words, if you privately think, "I''ll die if I can''t write," that may just be true. And so the ultimate loyalty to yourself is to write in order to save your life. In exchange for your life, know that your writing will ask a lot of you. It will drive a hard bargain. Writing asks a lot of all of us who do it, as does any art, or anything worth doing. Be prepared to give it what it requires. The blank page, the impossible deadline, the exhilarating rush of inspiration, the perils of publication: There is no profession more maddening or more rewarding than being a writer. Yet surprisingly, all writers, no matter how famous or successful, pass through the same sequence of stages in the course of their careers. It was this remarkable insight that inspired veteran writers Nancy Pickard and Lynn Lott to pool their talents and write a book. The result is one of the wisest and liveliest guides to the literary life ever written -- a volume of astonishing revelation, warm reassurance, brilliant encouragement, and welcome humor. Drawing on their own experience as writers of fiction and nonfiction as well as the insights of scores of colleagues, Pickard and Lott follow the trajectory of the writer''s life from the first time that inner voice whispers "I want to write" to the burst of accomplishment that comes when the book is finished, the vision expressed, the dream made real. No matter what you write or how much recognition you''ve received, if you''re serious about writing as a profession, you are bound to pass through the seven steps on the writer''s path. Pickard and Lott call these steps Unhappiness, Wanting, Commitment, Wavering, Letting Go, Immersion, and Fulfillment. Are you sunk in a pit of loneliness and confusion, burdened by pressures you can neither name nor escape? Welcome to the stage of Unhappiness, what Pickard and Lott call the "precreative state." Don''t worry, Tolstoy and Stephen King have been there before you, and somehow they cleared the abyss of Wanting (desires you can''t shake, jealousies that sting like bees) and climbed the ladder of Commitment. Wavering is where you hit the wall, tread water, and succumb to the dread paralysis of writer''s block and the abuse of unsympathetic editors and critics. E. B. White said a writer is like a surfer waiting for the perfect wave -- and in the stage of Letting Go, that wave finally crests, releasing the torrent of creativity that carries you through the deeply satisfying stages of Immersion and Fulfillment. Pickard and Lott are the buddies every writer dreams of -- always there to light the way and lighten your mood, generous with advice and sympathy, and bold enough to give you the occasional kick in the pants. Whether you''re a "wanna-be" writer or a published literary veteran, you''re bound to find this book a source of true delight, vital wisdom, and lasting inspiration. Book jacket.
