Penal Power and Colonial Rule

release date: Feb 03, 2014
Penal Power and Colonial Rule
This book provides an account of the distinctive way in which penal power developed outside the metropolitan centre. Proposing a radical revision of the Foucauldian thesis that criminological knowledge emerged in the service of a new form of power – discipline – that had inserted itself into the very centre of punishment, it argues that Foucault’s alignment of sovereign, disciplinary and governmental power will need to be reread and rebalanced to account for its operation in the colonial sphere. In particular it proposes that colonial penal power in India is best understood as a central element of a liberal colonial governmentality. To give an account of the emergence of this colonial form of penal power that was distinct from its metropolitan counterpart, this book analyses the British experience in India from the 1820s to the early 1920s. It provides a genealogy of both civil and military spheres of government, illustrating how knowledge of marginal and criminal social orders was tied in crucial ways to the demands of a colonial rule that was neither monolithic nor necessarily coherent. The analysis charts the emergence of a liberal colonial governmentality where power was almost exclusively framed in terms of sovereignty and security and where disciplinary strategies were given only limited and equivocal attention. Drawing on post-colonial theory, Penal Power and Colonial Rule opens up a new and unduly neglected area of research. An insightful and original exploration of theory and history, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Law, Criminology, History and Post-colonial Studies.

Emergency!:

release date: May 15, 2013
Emergency!:
Long before the hit TV show E.R., emergency room doctor Mark Brown decided that the world just had to know about real life in a hospital's E.R. The emergency room is a cauldron of human emotions. The anguish, fear, need, and gore is wearing. As the protective layer of the self is weakened, the pain seeps through and begins to stain the soul. The protective layer grows thicker. But the patients’ needs call out to a sensitive heart, and a balance is struck. Survival in this place requires a deep kindness nestled in a very dark sense of humor, and a strong faith tempered with cynicism. The people who work in this place refer to it as the Pit. What follows is a collection of true stories from all over the country about what the ER doors bring. These stories are irreverent, funny, horrifying, and heartbreaking. They will buffet you. These stories are presented randomly, not neatly categorized as one might desire but in the disorderly manner in which the doors might bring them. They are written not by writers and reporters but in the words of the doctors, nurses, and paramedics who were there.—From the Introduction

Your First Week With Node.js

release date: Nov 30, 2018
Your First Week With Node.js
While there have been quite a few attempts to get JavaScript working as a server-side language, Node.js (frequently just called Node) has been the first environment that's gained any traction. It's now used by companies such as Netflix, Uber and Paypal to power their web apps. Node allows for blazingly fast performance; thanks to its event loop model, common tasks like network connection and database I/O can be executed very quickly indeed. From a beginner's point of view, one of Node's obvious advantages is that it uses JavaScript, a ubiquitous language that many developers are comfortable with. If you can write JavaScript for the client-side, writing server-side applications with Node should not be too much of a stretch for you. In this book, we'll offer a beginner's introduction to Node and its related technologies, and get you under way writing your first Node applications. It contains: What Is Node and When Should I Use It? by James Hibbard A Beginner Splurge in Node.js by Camilo Reyes and Michiel Mulders A Beginner's Guide to npm- the Node Package Manager by Michael Wanyoike and Peter Dierx Forms, File Uploads and Security with Node.js and Express by Mark Brown MEAN Stack: Build an App with Angular 2+ and the Angular CLI by Manjunath M Debugging JavaScript with the Node Debugger by Camilo Reyes Using MySQL with Node.js and the mysql JavaScript Client by Jay Raj How to Use SSL/TLS with Node.js by Florian Rappl and Almir Bijedic This book is for anyone who wants to start learning server-side development with Node.js. Familiarity with JavaScript is assumed, but we don't assume any previous back-end development experience.

JavaScript: Best Practice presents articles discussing modern JavaScript best practice, enabling you to write more powerful code that is clean, performant, maintainable, and reusable. 6 JavaScript Projects presents six complete JavaScript projects; each taking advantage of modern JavaScript and its ecosystem. Modern JavaScript Tools & Skills contains a collection of articles outlining essential tools and skills that every modern JavaScript developer should know.
