Promising Digital Risk Management

release date: Oct 05, 2021
Promising Digital Risk Management
Digital Risk Management is a subject filled with question marks---related to cybersecurity, it''s a maze of obscure definitions, standards, compliance rules, and incrementally developed technologies to delight and confuse. Leaders have to integrate security into their teams and organizations to create an on-going learning environment. Without a coherent framework for putting it all together, it''s easy to get lost in claims and jargon. This simple guide explains the big picture of how to assess vulnerabilities and risks and produce actionable policies, that meet external standards and compliance guidelines. It''s aimed at anyone who seeks answers to these questions. Without technicalities, it explains the concepts to develop readers'' intuitions about the challenges and the threats faced by security planners and reluctant participants.

Money, Ownership. and Agency

release date: Nov 01, 2019
Money, Ownership. and Agency
A survey of the elementary functions of money and its invariant representations, alongside the complementary topic of ownership. The book uses the language of Promise Theory to explain the semantics and lifecycle of money in a concise and semi-formal manner, with the goal of reaching a modern probabilistic view of money and economics as a network, independent of philosophical or political treatments as well as models that build on Game Theory. Relativistic notions like `value'' are distinguished carefully from invariant measures of amount to decouple frequently muddled concepts in the popular literature, and money is distinguished from its many inequivalent representations (i.e. proxy technologies). A key strength of this work lies in the way it exposes money as an interconnection network, which has evolved to communicate intentions and decisions between agents in a network, where prices form a language for information channels that we call markets. This book is aimed at economists, philosophers, and engineers. It introduces readers to the concepts in a practical manner, building on the concept of voluntary cooperation. The book draws on many examples from the real world, with a particular emphasis on semi-formal semantics. ''A must read for anyone involved in designing intelligent digital currency.''--Mike Warner (Senior Strategist, San Francisco Federal Reserve)

Smart Spacetime

release date: Mar 04, 2019
Smart Spacetime
`The err is human, to explain is [Mark Burgess]'' --Patrick Debois `One of the best reads and written by one of the best minds!'' --Glenn O''Donnell (about In Search of Certainty) What if space is not like we learn in mathematics, but more like a network? What happens to the ability to measure things as you shrink or expand? Since Einstein, space and time were the province of theoretical physicists and science fiction writers, but today they are of equal importance in Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and even Biology. This book tells a new and radical story of space and time, rooted in fundamental physics but going beyond to underpin some of the biggest questions in science and technology. This is a book about physics, it''s about computers, artificial intelligence, and many other topics on surface. It''s about everything that has to do with information. It draws on examples from every avenue of life, and pulls apart preconceptions that have been programmed into us from childhood. It re-examines ideas like distance, time, and speed, and asks if we really know what those things are. If they are really so fundamental and universal concepts then can we also see them and use them in computers, or in the growing of a plant? Conversely, can we see phenomena we know from computers in physics? We can learn a lot by comparing the way we describe physics with the way we describe computers---and that throws up a radical view: the concept ofvirtualization, and what it might mean for physics. `I think that it wouldn''t be too much of a stretch to say that [Mark Burgess] is the closest thing to Richard Feynman within our industry'' --Cameron Haight `...magnificent; a tour de force of connecting the dots of many disciplines... Mark''s combination of originality, synthesis and practicality knows no equal.'' --Paul Borrill

Where Did My Industry Go?

release date: Nov 09, 2017
Where Did My Industry Go?
My first experience of an agency was back in the mid 1990s. Since then I have set up and built various successful businesses in the property, marketing, recruitment, publishing and digital sectors. Over all those years I have always remained connected to the estate agency industry in one way or another but the crazy thing is that although my journey over the last 25+ years has been one of discovery and development, the estate agency industry itself has remained largely unchanged. I can still relate with all of the issues and processes that take place on a day-to-day basis, as if feels like it was only yesterday that I worked in estate agency myself. The techniques and technology being used in the big wide world seem to have somehow passed traditional estate agency by and my Proptech company, Iceberg Digital, is on a mission to bring that tech, process and reasoning into estate agency and help traditional agents modernise their business. In this book Mark breaks down some of the key issues that currently exist in most estate agency businesses and explains how those issues can not only be solved but also what needs to be done in order to reinvent your processes and how they will open your eyes to a whole new dawn in estate agency - one where your current competitors simply can''t compete.

Making a Difference

release date: Nov 01, 2011
Making a Difference
Addictions and the problems they produce are not new to the world in which we live. People all over the world are in bondage to the sins of many different kinds of life-controlling habits. This group of people has become one of the largest unreached groups in all of modern societies. There is a sure answer for deliverance and victory. God has given us the answer to these problems in His Word. Although there have been many different approaches to the problem of addictions, the only true cure from addictions is found in the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We must apply this truth in the life of the addict. Without this power, no one could live a life that is pleasing to God. God desires that we live according to His Word, becoming more like His Son as a result. Having a personal relationship with Christ is the only thing that can accomplish this. Making a Difference is a Biblical approach to addiction recovery that emphasizes how to recognize the signs of addiction, the effect addictions have on the local church body, the challenges and goals of an addiction recovery ministry, where addictions come from and to how to gain freedom from them, and many more topics surrounding addiction, recovery, and relapse. It is important that the Christian Worker, whether ordained or layman, understand how to deal with people who are in bondage to addictions and what the Bible teaches about addiction, recovery, and relapse. How do we distinguish truth from error when we are faced with the world''s view of these topics? This book will clear up misconceptions a person may have about addiction, recovery, and relapse. Jesus said we are the light of the world. It is our duty, and should be our desire, to take the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ to the world. One way we can accomplish this is to reach and restore those who are in bondage to life-controlling habits. Jesus Christ gave His life for us on the cross at Calvary. There could be no better way for us to show our love to Him than to reach others with the Gospel.

Slogans

release date: Aug 01, 2005
Slogans
A book about what it means to be in controlIt is a few years from now ... and society''s addiction to smart mobile communications is beginning to drive a wedge between communities all over the world. Citizens no longer talk to their neighbours, they connect electronically through buddy-lists and address-books, using virtual reality meeting places. Society is dissociating into little more than special interest groups and rival gangs, where institutional government and the rule of law have little meaning.Meanwhile, companies large and small analyse `big data'' to track the trajectory of the world, planning out ways to manipulate it to their advantage, and religious organizations imitate the mob to win back their own control. ``Dumbing down'''' and dropping out---the spoilt and the greedy watch the tumble-drier of commerce process an existence that is going nowhere. So much for the knowledge-based economy. In this world of overt information, a new arms race for control is gathering pace. In a desperate effort to cement new public loyalties and consolidate fragmenting government power, American media giant PhoxHollywood is tasked to create a carefully crafted computer game to train citizens into compliance. It is free for everyone on the planet and it entices people to meet and interact as never before. But the game''s moral agenda attracts unwanted attention from the press who claim that it is merely a front for Whitehouse propaganda. When a religious group moves to secure its own share of the power, an unlikely constellation of citizens, from around the globe, interested only in their own futures, unwittingly find themselves pulled together by circumstances, and playing a game of their own... Originally written as near-future science fiction between 2003-2005, in the tradition of John Brunner and Ayn Rand, this novel looks increasingly plausible today as a commentary on the effect of social media and technological propaganda forces in modern society.

PRINCIPLES OF NETWORK & SYSTEM ADMIN. 2nd Ed.

release date: Mar 01, 2004
PRINCIPLES OF NETWORK & SYSTEM ADMIN. 2nd Ed.
Market_Desc: · Students and novice system administrators· Professional network and systems administrators Special Features: · Coverage of both network and system administration from the perspective of the underlying principles that do not change on a day-to-day basis· Shows how to discover customer needs and then use that information to identify, interpret, and evaluate system and network requirements· Fully updated to cover new technologies including Java Services and Ipv6 and both Unix and Windows systems· Extended coverage of security including ISO 17799 About The Book: Burgess approaches both network and system administration from the perspective of principles and ideas which do not change on a day-to-day basis.A great deal of attention is paid to the heuristics of system and network administration; technical and sociological issues are taken into account equally and are presented thoughtfully with an eye to teaching not what to do as a system or network administrator, but how to think about problems that arise in practice. As a result, the author keeps the reader looking forward to what comes next and how to implement what he or she has learned. The focus is on strategic issues, how to keep systems maintainable and how to manage configuration files across an enterprise. During the 80s and most of the 90s the frontiers of system administration were about understanding what the job entailed and building tools in order to manage networks more efficiently. The next phase is about standardization of management and practice, making system administration more formal and less ad hoc, and Burgess'' book is one of the first to begin to push into this area.Whilst there are multitudes of ways to become a systems administrator, many employers prefer to hire people with some formal college education. Certification and practical experience demonstrating these skills will be essential for applicants without a degree. Systems administrators must keep their skills current and acquire new ones.
