Monotheism and Religious Experience

release date: Dec 31, 2024
Monotheism and Religious Experience
In the monotheistic traditions, there are people who report having special experiences that justify their monotheistic beliefs. They see, hear, or otherwise experience directly the one true God, ruler of the universe. In order to understand what is going on in these experiences and how we should respond to reports of these experiences, it is important to understand what religious experiences can and can''t be, what the claim of monotheism entails, and therefore how what reports of such experiences mean, both for the experiencer and for the recipient of the report.

Candles: Some Burn Bright... Mine and Others Don't...? Humorous Short Stories by Mark Owen Cope Sr.

release date: Apr 01, 2015
Candles: Some Burn Bright... Mine and Others Don't...? Humorous Short Stories by Mark Owen Cope Sr.
"This is a compilation of stories that cumulatively have become an explanation of how lucky and unlucky a person like me can be," Mark Owen Cope Sr. writes in the introduction to this book. In his seventy years of life, he has witnessed over and over again the manic whims of Fortune-often with hilarious consequences. Whether it''s the baseball bat he''d always wanted leading to the near-drowning of an old lady ("A Lovely Little Baseball Bat") or a former circus performer''s mobile home falling literally under the Arkansas Guarantee ("The Dog Poop Lady and the Arkansas Guarantee"), each story turns on those real-life twists of irony that are always stranger than fiction. Some of these anecdotes are jokes, others probe at darker points in Mr. Cope''s life, but throughout this collection of stories, as in life, the author never loses his sense of humor. Mark Owen Cope Sr., originally from Idaho, has lived across the United States, in California, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina. Since his teenage years, he''s worked a number of jobs, from electrician''s helper to air-conditioning repairman to mobile-home salesman to plumber (and everything in between)-jobs which have brought him into contact with the comical cast of characters that populates this book. In his youth, Mr. Cope spent two terms enlisted in the Air Force, working primarily in radio repair, photo interpretation, and intelligence. Mr. Cope has four children and survives his late wife, Betty, to whom he was married for more than forty-five years and to whom this book is dedicated.

Love and Other Poems

Love and Other Poems
"Harmony... is a most wonderful thing. Within harmony everything has balance. Good and evil, joy and sadness are all in tune and perfectly aligned. Yet harmony is difficult to achieve in a world of constant change"."Love and Other Poems", is a collection of poems by British born poet, Mark Williams. This is Mark's fourth collection of published works and his first to explore poetry within a classical Japanese context. Having a modern, philosophical feel, each poem is accompanied by an explanation, as well as both English and Kanji translations. Yet, while having the elements of classical Japanese styling, Mark's poems are still very approachable and easy to relate to, covering a wide range of issues placed into three broad categories - wisdom, love, and life. Within each category is a plethora of ideas and concepts, some full of joy, others, torrid despair. These poems will touch and guide you on a pathway, a pathway perhaps to... harmony itself.

A Comparative Doxastic-Practice Epistemology of Religious Experience

release date: Aug 18, 2014
A Comparative Doxastic-Practice Epistemology of Religious Experience
u200bThis book takes a theoretical enterprise in Christian philosophy of religion and applies it to Buddhism, thus defending Buddhism and presenting it favorably in comparison. Chapters explore how the claims of both Christianity and Theravada Buddhism rest on people’s experiences, so the question as to which claimants to religious knowledge are right rests on the evidential value of those experiences. The book examines mysticism and ways to understand what goes on in religious experiences, helping us to understand whether it is good grounds for religious belief. The author argues that religious language in both Christian and Buddhist traditions is intelligible as factual discourse, and so reports of mystical experience are true or false. The book contends that those experiences can be fruitfully thought of as perceptual in kind and that they are therefore good prima facie grounds for religious belief, in the absence of defeating conditions. The work goes on to explore Christian and Buddhist testimony and how the likelihood of self-deception, self-delusion, imaginative elaboration and the like constitutes a defeating condition. It is shown that this defeater has less scope for operation in the Buddhist case than in the Christian case, and therefore Theravada Buddhism is better grounded. This work will appeal to students and scholars of philosophy and philosophy of religion, and those interested in the study of religious experience.

The Perils of Bipolarity

release date: Jan 01, 2012
The Perils of Bipolarity
Intrastate conflicts, ranging from localized rebellions to civil war, increased linearly from 1946 through 1992 and then dramatically decreased in the post-Cold War era. This rise and fall of subnational conflict closely mirrors the proxy wars fought by or between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the United States. Proxy refers to (g)reat power hostility expressed through client states and describes superpower use of these states to pursue strategic and ideological goals within the confines of nuclear deterrent postures extant during the Cold War.1 This was done in large part to achieve strategic national interests and other political goals without risking nuclear war. In its waning years, the USSR could no longer afford to fund these wars; America ended support to many of these commitments soon after the Cold War ended.2 The United States emerged from the Cold War as the sole superpower in a unipolar international system. However, evidence suggests this unipolarity could soon change as a new bipolar system emerges with China as the next challenger superpower. Scholars debate the likelihood of future war with a rising China, with each side arguing With resources dried up, former client states and subgroups had little choice but to resolve these conflicts, either via negotiation or decisive victory.
