Hello, My Name Is Max and I Have Autism

release date: Jul 02, 2014
Hello, My Name Is Max and I Have Autism
Max Miller is a 12 year old high functioning autistic. Max was diagnosed with autism at age 5. His original prognosis was that he would never learn and was deemed “unteachable.” It was recommended to his parents that he be institutionalized as he would never thrive. His parents defied this assertion and pressed forward with a blend of traditional and non-traditional therapeutic methods. The blend of methods worked and Max began to communicate. Max was non-verbal until age 6. He did not learn to read and write until age 10. He is now integrated in the classroom and reads at grade level. Due to his disability, Max encountered many forms of discrimination, mostly due to ignorance. He was denied access to the many things allotted to children—sports, education, scouting, birthday parties, even playdates. Despite these harms, Max chose not to be bitter. He embraced his autism and became an advocate for himself and for other children on the spectrum. When words were difficult to come by, Max would use art to communicate his feelings to his mother. He now uses art and essays as a tool to educate others about what it is like to have autism. An aspiring artist, his art has been displayed at the Denver Art Museum and 40 West Gallery. His art show, Insight into the Autistic Mind, is on constant display as part of Max’s in-services for groups interested in autism. He was profiled in the local media for his advocacy. Max has his own Facebook page for his art show and at present has 200 likes and growing. Max lives in Denver, Colorado with his mom and dad and four cats. He has a love of skateboarding, his PS3, writing, art and music. He wants to be a DJ and play in a jazz band when he grows up.

I Cover the Waterfront

I Cover the Waterfront
“Distinctive, original, fresh in in tone and manner, with a quaint whimsicality of feeling and expression.”—The New York Times Life on the Western waterfront has always fascinated Max Miller, a special reporter for the San Diego Sun. Embraced by all the waterfront folk, he has joined them on their cruises, has learned the mystery of their crafts, and knows them like brothers. Max himself has become a part of the waterfront. Not a fishing boat ties up to the wharf without Max Miller getting the story. Not a submarine comes in nor an airplane soars out over the water without Max Miller’s being invited to go. He is one of the first men to climb up the ladder of the Pacific lines, especially when celebrities are aboard. A combination of newspaper reporter, philosopher, and poet, the author writes his charming sketches in his “studio” upstairs in the tugboat office, where he can look out over his domain. But reporting is not simply a job with Max Miller; it is the greatest pleasure of his life. He delights in setting down his impressions of the Western shore, where life is a constant flux and reflux, seasonal, immutable, and yet ever exciting—the departure of the sardine fleet, the hunt for elephant seals for the zoo, the sailing of the California fruit liners. I Cover the Waterfront was first published in the early 1930s and has since gone on to become a classic. It is as memorable for its unique stories as it is for its individual style—so keenly sensitive to the personalities of men and to the romantic environment of the harbor and deep-sea life.

Daybreak For Our Carrier

release date: Jul 19, 2017
Daybreak For Our Carrier
The aircraft carrier is the dramatic new naval vessel of this war. Its development has revolutionized the techniques of naval strategy. Equipped with aircraft carriers, two huge task forces—one American and one Japanese—have twice fought major sea battles in this war without a ship on either side ever firing a gun. Lt. Com. Max Miller of the United States Naval Reserve, in peacetime a writer of considerable repute, has here set down the whole feel of life at sea on one of the great American aircraft carriers on task-force duty. The carrier is any carrier. The battle is any battle. Here is the way the men of the carrier think and feel, from the moment of leaving port, through the long days of zigzagging into enemy waters, the mounting tension as the moment of battle draws near, the furious hours of attack, the losses and the triumph, the return homeward. Here, on duty and at play, are the pilots and gunners, the plane-handlers and the ammunition passers, the flight officers and the chaplains—all the hundreds and hundreds of young Americans who work and fight the carrier, key weapon in modern ocean warfare. The picture is authentic. Lt. Com. Miller spent many weeks at sea gathering this material, soaking up these impressions. He served in the navy in the last war and subsequently spent many years as a newspaperman in San Diego, California, covering the waterfront of this great naval base.
