The intention of this research was to apply the DMAIC tool and other Six Sigma tools to assess the reliability of diesel generator peaker units when called into activation. While this is not strictly a manufacturing application, this study makes adequate use of the Six Sigma methodology to evaluate a non-manufacturing engineering process. This research and associated case study aim to evaluate the reliability of the current system and compare that process sigma to a Six Sigma process. By establishing a quantifiable metric by which reliability can be compared, DMAIC analysis can be used to develop a process for evaluating improvements in reliability and suggest realistic improvements that can be implemented and measured to show improvement upon the current reliability. Furthermore, this research will also suggest methods of process control that can be developed and utilized to ensure that the solutions presented here continue to be effective as they are continually utilized and improved.
