The Moral Rights of Authors and Artists

release date: Jan 20, 2025
The Moral Rights of Authors and Artists
Moral rights are held by authors and artists under copyright laws around the world and serve to recognize their role and rights as creators. In the technological context, these rights have acquired a new importance. Moral rights respond to a growing public need for the integrity of knowledge, while providing much-needed support in the struggle against copyright piracy. Crucially, they affirm the basic human dignity of authors and artists everywhere. They offer the potential for new approaches to copyright conflicts - for harmonizing public and private interests, commercial and cultural priorities, copyright and Copyleft, through a time-tested and universally relevant idea. Moral Rights of Authors and Artists: From the Birth of Copyright to the Age of Artificial Intelligence tells the story of moral rights as the idea developed through the ages, from their antecedents in Asia and Europe to their modern emergence in British and European copyright laws, and their recent, reluctant yet powerful acceptance in the United States. It paints an unparalleled comparative picture of copyright law, reaching from North America to Australia and New Zealand, India, Japan, Korea, and all across Continental Europe - drawn from the author''s rich international experience, and her practical insights as an author and artist herself. Above all, this book explores the unprecedented relevance of moral rights in the age of artificial intelligence, where they can help to affirm the importance of human creativity at its most vulnerable. It is a powerful work of illumination and advocacy.

Diplomatic and Political Interpreting Explained

Diplomatic and Political Interpreting Explained
The role of the interpreter at international meetings of politicians and diplomats is a critical one. This book examines the history of diplomacy and diplomatic interpreting as well as the rules and realities of modern diplomatic relations. Building on interviews with interpreters, diplomats and politicians, it examines language as a tool of diplomatic and political communication, the role of interpreters in diplomacy, and the different forms of interaction and communicative behaviour interpreters face and exhibit. The book covers the different ways in which interpreters manage information, expressivity, and interaction, and what diplomats think about it. Each chapter presents key concepts and definitions; examples from existing literature are combined with interviews conducted with professional interpreters as well as seasoned diplomats and politicians to illustrate their relevance in interpreting practice. With activities for group work and self-study, including analysis and discussion of real-life interpreted diplomatic or political events, this book offers a range of interpreting exercises that encourage students to apply the different strategies discussed in the book. Weaving together the voices of interpreters, diplomats, and politicians with a systematic look at the theory and practice of interpreting in diplomatic settings, this is not only an essential textbook for interpreting students and educators but will also be of interest to professional interpreters and students and scholars of politics and international relations. Why Couples Fight

release date: Jan 26, 2021
Why Couples Fight
Bestselling author and relationship expert, Mira Kirshenbaum examines power dynamics in relationships and teaches couples her three-step method for ending their power struggles and finding their way back to love. How do two well-meaning people who genuinely care about each other end up in a damaged, unsatisfying relationship? Every couple faces conflict and often the root of the problem is how we''re not getting our needs met. Initially, we will try to remedy it with reasonable requests--or hints--and a kind tone. But when that fails, we feel disempowered, which leads to sighs, eye rolls, silences, subtle put-downs, insults, and even threats. These are power moves. And while we often engage in power moves unintentionally, the result is the same: our partner feels disempowered and will try to re-empower themselves. Thus the continuous, endlessly destructive dynamic takes hold. Relationship expert Mira Kirshenbaum, bestselling author of Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay, reveals a better way with her three-step method for conflict-free problem solving. By recognizing each partner''s power moves, we can instead find mutually satisfying ways to heal our hurts and meet each other''s needs. Non-judgmental, compassionate, and wise, this is an indispensable guide to help couples end the negative cycle and get back to the loving understanding that brought them together in the first place.

release date: Dec 14, 2018
Infertility Caused by Decreased Oxygen Utilization and Jinn (Demon)
There are two main causes of Infertility: Decreased Oxygen Utilization and Jinn (Demon). When the environment or body has too many Positive Ions, the result is Decreased Oxygen Utilization. Positive Ions are produced by the manmade atmosphere, and they increase the acidity and inflammation in the body. These Positive Ions can affect the body in numerous ways, including decreased fertility. Many times, medicine cannot solve the problem—what people must do is to expose themselves to the Negative Ions. Dr. Mira Bajirova, an Associate Professor, Obstetrician-Gynecologist, and In Vitro Fertilization Consultant from Paris, explores what this means to those suffering from Infertility. She also highlights how Evil Jinn—through Jinn Possession, Black Magic and Evil Eye—can lead to disastrous consequences including the Infertility. Filled with insights from the Quran and medicine, this is an informative guide for anyone seeking to improve their health and expand their family.

India in the 21st Century

release date: Apr 04, 2018
India in the 21st Century
India is fast overtaking China to become the most populous country on Earth. By mid-century, its 1.7 billion people will live in what is projected to become the world''s second-largest economy after China. While a democracy and an open society compared to China, assertive Hindu nationalism is posing new challenges to India''s democratic freedoms and institutions at a time when illiberal democracies and autocratic leaders are on the rise worldwide. How India''s destiny plays out in the coming decades will matter deeply to a world where the West''s influence in shaping the 21st century will decline as that of these two Asian giants and other emerging economies in Africa and Latin America rise. In India in the 21st Century, Mira Kamdar, a former member of the New York Times Editorial Board and an award-winning author, offers readers an introduction to India today in all its complexity. In a concise question-and-answer format, Kamdar addresses India''s history, including its ancient civilization and kingdoms; its religious plurality; its colonial legacy and independence movement; the political and social structures in place today; its rapidly growing economy and financial system; India''s place in the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century; the challenge to India posed by climate change and dwindling global resources; wealth concentration and stark social inequalities; the rise of big data and robotics; the role of social media and more. She explores India''s contradictions and complications, while celebrating the merging of India''s multicultural landscape and deep artistic and intellectual heritage with the Information Age and the expansion of mass media. With clarity and balance, Kamdar brings her in-depth knowledge of India and eloquent writing style to bear in this focused and incisive addition to Oxford''s highly successful What Everyone Needs to Know series.

Blood for Thought

release date: Sep 26, 2017
Blood for Thought
Blood for Thought delves into a relatively unexplored area of rabbinic literature: the vast corpus of laws, regulations, and instructions pertaining to sacrificial rituals. Mira Balberg traces and analyzes the ways in which the early rabbis interpreted and conceived of biblical sacrifices, reinventing them as a site through which to negotiate intellectual, cultural, and religious trends and practices in their surrounding world. Rather than viewing the rabbinic project as an attempt to generate a nonsacrificial version of Judaism, she argues that the rabbis developed a new sacrificial Jewish tradition altogether, consisting of not merely substitutes to sacrifice but elaborate practical manuals that redefined the processes themselves, radically transforming the meanings of sacrifice, its efficacy, and its value.

The Wonderling

The Wonderling
In this extraordinary debut novel with its deft nod to Dickensian heroes and rogues, Mira Bartók tells the story of Arthur, a shy, fox-like foundling with only one ear and a desperate desire to belong, as he seeks his destiny. Have you been unexpectedly burdened by a recently orphaned or unclaimed creature? Worry not! We have just the solution for you! Welcome to the Home for Wayward and Misbegotten Creatures, an institution run by evil Miss Carbunkle, a cunning villainess who believes her terrified young charges exist only to serve and suffer. Part animal and part human, the groundlings toil in classroom and factory, forbidden to enjoy anything regular children have, most particularly singing and music. For the Wonderling, an innocent-hearted, one-eared, fox-like eleven-year-old with only a number rather than a proper name — a 13 etched on a medallion around his neck — it is the only home he has ever known. But unexpected courage leads him to acquire the loyalty of a young bird groundling named Trinket, who gives the Home’s loneliest inhabitant two incredible gifts: a real name — Arthur, like the good king in the old stories — and a best friend. Using Trinket’s ingenious invention, the pair escape over the wall and embark on an adventure that will take them out into the wider world and ultimately down the path of sweet Arthur’s true destiny. Richly imagined, with shimmering language, steampunk motifs, and gripping, magical plot twists, this high adventure fantasy is the debut novel of award-winning memoirist Mira Bartók and has already been put into development for a major motion picture.

Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature

release date: Feb 15, 2014
Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature
This book explores the ways in which the early rabbis reshaped biblical laws of ritual purity and impurity and argues that the rabbis’ new purity discourse generated a unique notion of a bodily self. Focusing on the Mishnah, a Palestinian legal codex compiled around the turn of the third century CE, Mira Balberg shows how the rabbis constructed the processes of contracting, conveying, and managing ritual impurity as ways of negotiating the relations between one’s self and one’s body and, more broadly, the relations between one’s self and one’s human and nonhuman environments. With their heightened emphasis on subjectivity, consciousness, and self-reflection, the rabbis reinvented biblically inherited language and practices in a way that resonated with central cultural concerns and intellectual commitments of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean world. Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature adds a new dimension to the study of practices of self-making in antiquity by suggesting that not only philosophical exercises but also legal paradigms functioned as sites through which the self was shaped and improved.
