Rockez!

release date: Mar 31, 2026
Rockez!
November 1960. The Beatles have just been kicked out of Hamburg, and their future looks bleak indeed. Meanwhile, in Paris, the very first French rock group, Les Chaussettes Noires [The Black Sox], have just passed their first record company audition. Before the Beatles play their first gig at the Cavern, the Black Sox already have a hit, and they will soon be besieged by screaming fans. Their charismatic lead singer, Eddy Mitchell (just fifteen days younger than Paul McCartney), will become one of the greatest lyricists of the 20th and 21st centuries - the equal of both Chuck Berry and Hal David. March 31, 1963. Elvis Presley's latest unfortunate film, It Happened at the World's Fair, is about to be inflicted on the American public. The Beatles have just released their first album, but the term "Beatlemania" won't be coined for another six months. On the other hand, a phenomenon that can be best described as "Johnnymania" is already raging in Europe, and when Johnny Hallyday, the French Elvis, takes the stage tonight in Amsterdam, he will whip the crowd into a frenzy, ultimately inciting a near riot. A year before the Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and a year and a half before the legendary duel between James Brown and the Rolling Stones at The T.A.M.I Show, this televised concert is one of the first great audio-visual documents of the rock era. The American Elvis will not awaken from his self-induced musical coma for another five years. It is a truth universally acknowledged that French rock music is a joke, but this received wisdom is the product of decades of egregious misinformation purveyed by lazy, ignorant and arrogant music critics. ROCKEZ! The Rise of the French Elvis, the French Beatles, & the Miniature Golf Course Where It All Began demonstrates conclusively that the best French rockers were just as cool, crazy and creative as the American and British musicians who inspired them.
