Für den breiteren Leserkreis, der Interesse daran hat, einmal nachzulesen, wie und mit welchen Argumenten Copernicus das (theologisch begründete) alte Weltbild aus den Angeln hob, bietet die vorliegende Ausgabe eine ausführlich kommentierte Auswahl der zentralen Texte, in denen Copernicus seine Entdeckung erklärt und begründet. Gegeben wird das 1. Buch von »Über die Kreisbewegungen der Himmelskörper«, in dem Copernicus seine Entdeckung auf den Punkt bringt, vorangestellt sind die kurze Abhandlung »Über die Erklärungsgrundlagen der Bewegungen am Himmel« und der »Brief gegen Werner« - zwei Texte, die für das Verständnis der Genese des von ihm begründeten »Kopernikanischen Weltbilds« von großer Bedeutung sind. Alle Texte werden zweisprachig (lat.dt.) präsentiert und sachkundig erläutert.

"Commentariolus", from Nicolaus Copernicus. Nicolaus Copernicus, Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at its center (1473-1543)

The Ptolemaic system of the universe, with the earth at the center, had held sway since antiquity as authoritative in philosophy, science, and church teaching. Following his observations of the heavenly bodies, Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) abandoned the geocentric system for a heliocentric model, with the sun at the center. His remarkable work, On the Revolutions of Heavenly Spheres, stands as one of the greatest intellectual revolutions of all time, and profoundly influenced, among others, Galileo and Sir Isaac Newton.

Der Band enthält - mit dem Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit - kritische Editionen aller Copernicus-Biographien und biographischen Texte des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts. Alle lateinischen, französischen, italienischen und polnischen Texte werden sowohl im Originaltext als auch in deutschen Übersetzungen wiedergegeben. Einen umfassend kommentierten Katalog der frühen Copernicus-Bildnisse stellt der zweite, ikonographische Teil des Bandes dar. Dieser Katalog, der weit über alle bisherigen Publikationen zur Copernicus-Ikonographie hinausgeht, umfaßt alle Darstellungen von Copernicus in der Malerei und Grafik des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts, sofern es sich nicht um bloße Nachstiche handelt.

Die Briefausgabe enh lt in ihrem Kernbereich 20 Briefe bzw. Nachrichten von Briefen, die von Copernicus stammen oder ihm zugeschrieben werden und deren h ufigster Empf nger der erml ndische Bischof Johannes Dantiscus ist. Im Unterschied zu anderen Ausgaben ber cksichtigt diese Edition auch solche Briefe, deren Echtheit umstritten ist. So ist der Brief von Copernicus an den "Knaben Georgius" vom Januar 1514 (Nr. 6), der aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach unecht ist, ebenso aufgenommen worden, wie die verifizierbaren Nachrichten von ehemals vorhanden gewesenen Briefen.
