A History of the Diocese of Charleston

release date: Jun 01, 2020
A History of the Diocese of Charleston
In 1820, the Catholic Diocese of Charleston was established, and Bishop John England arrived from Ireland. His new diocese encompassed North and South Carolina, Georgia and, for a time, Haiti. From 1859 to 1885, when Patrick Lynch and Henry Northrop were bishops of Charleston, the diocese included the Bahama Islands. However, the history of Catholics in the diocese--which now covers all of South Carolina--began much earlier. The arrival of Spanish settlers and missionary priests dated back more than 150 years before there was a diocese on American soil. Sister Pam Smith charts the history of the diocese from the first words of prayer uttered on Santa Elena in the sixteenth century through the interfaith singing of a reformed slaveholder''s hymn at a painful funeral in the twenty-first century.

The Body of the Artisan

release date: Jan 16, 2018
The Body of the Artisan
Since the time of Aristotle, the making of knowledge and the making of objects have generally been considered separate enterprises. Yet during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the two became linked through a "new" philosophy known as science. In The Body of the Artisan, Pamela H. Smith demonstrates how much early modern science owed to an unlikely source-artists and artisans. From goldsmiths to locksmiths and from carpenters to painters, artists and artisans were much sought after by the new scientists for their intimate, hands-on knowledge of natural materials and the ability to manipulate them. Drawing on a fascinating array of new evidence from northern Europe including artisans'' objects and their writings, Smith shows how artisans saw all knowledge as rooted in matter and nature. With nearly two hundred images, The Body of the Artisan provides astonishingly vivid examples of this Renaissance synergy among art, craft, and science, and recovers a forgotten episode of the Scientific Revolution-an episode that forever altered the way we see the natural world.

Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace

release date: Apr 12, 2017
Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace
Fiery trials, like a controlled fire, leads to better growth. After a controlled fire, the soil is richer, and the trees are stronger. Likewise, after a fiery trial the Christian is stronger, and their character is richer. Adversity enters the Christian''s life only through, and by, the permission of God. It doesn''t come to weaken us, but to strengthen us. When we learn how to tap into God''s anointing for our breakthrough, we can then be instrumental in blessing others, as God has blessed us. "Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace" is about the struggles Christians encounter during their faith journey, and God''s divine interventions. It will teach you how to walk by faith, and encourage you on this Christian journey. It will inspire you when your light of hope grows dim, and comfort you when despair constrains your progress. Excerpts from "Tried by Fire, Shaped by Grace": The anointing is given to empower you for the greater works ahead. Job likened the trying of his faith to that of gold being purged of its impurities. Job was tested to see if he would remain faithful to God when God doesn''t answer, and to reveal unto others the awesome resurrecting power of God to restore double, and even more, what Satan steals.

Salmos from South Bethlehem
This collection of 20 poems is spoken in the voice of a character named Rosa Celestina Morales, a 17 year old Puerto Rican girl living in South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in the early 1970s. Rosa''s hopes and dreams, frustrations and torments are expressed in a mix of street talk, self-mumbling, and phrases from familiar prayers in Spanish, imported from the Spanish Mass and the first 20 psalms. The content is drawn from the author''s own experiences during the year she lived in Rosa''s neighborhood as well as from stories she heard and people she met around the neighborhood. Several of these poems have appeared previously in the New York Quarterly, Cimarron Review, and Woman Song III. This is the first time the set of 20 have been collected in book form. The work is framed as a poetic memoir. A prose introduction by the author and an afterword in Rosa''s voice round out the series of poems and project what Rosa''s life might have turned to some forty years later.

Begging for Justice -The Silent Coalition

release date: Oct 04, 2009
Begging for Justice -The Silent Coalition
This book is about a woman fighting for justice, her cry silenced. An inmate, abused, raped, whose cries were ignored. I took my fight to the streets with a Grand Jury Petition, after begging the District Attorney in Tulsa for help. From prison walls I took on the battle to stop prison rapes. I begged for help but my voice was not heard because of the Silent Coalition. The State Driver Examiner that raped me was never charged, being represented by the State of Oklahoma Attorney General''s office. I took my fight to Washington, to no avail. I grew up in Cushing, Oklahoma. My parents worked in the cotton fields. I am the seventh of eight children, the baby girl, a Child of God, married to a wonderful man, mother of one, Maurice, grandmother of one, Kyante. I owned several beauty shops. I love fighting for inmates'' rights and am a proud fighter for civil rights. I love Gospel music. I stand on faith and God''s word. My book was inspired by the pain and suffering that life dealt me.
