Dalla fine del Settecento fino al 1912, l’isola di Malaga accolse una comunità di pescatori composta da afroamericani, bianchi poveri e altre etnie che avevano trovato rifugio su quel lembo di terra nel Golfo del Maine. Un atto che sancí con efferata violenza la fine di quella comunità. Il romanzo si apre nel 1793 con l’arrivo ad Apple Island – cosí l’isola viene ribattezzata nella finzione letteraria – di Benjamin Honey, nero nato in schiavitú, e di sua moglie Patience, irlandese di Galway. Aspirante frut-ticultore, Benjamin Honey sbarca sull’isola con dodici sacchetti di iuta contenenti semi di diverse varietà di mele e, con ostinata pazienza, riesce a creare il suo piccolo Eden: un frutteto di trentadue meli. Piú di un secolo dopo, nel 1911, una manciata di esseri umani vive sull’isola: i discendenti di Benjamin e Patience Honey, innanzi tutto, Esther Honey e suo figlio Eha, i figli di Eha; le sorelle McDermott, che passano le giornate a lavare i panni e ad accudire tre orfani; i fratellastri Lark, abili pescatori dai capelli e dagli occhi incolori, ereditati da padri africani, mamme irlandesi e nonni svedesi, e i loro quattro figli, vaganti per l’isola come spettri gentili e affamati; la vecchia Annie Parker e Zachary Hand to God Proverbs che vive in un albero cavo. Gli abitanti di Apple Island conducono un’esistenza semplice e povera nel loro piccolo Eden, in cui ciascuno è libero di prendersi cura delle proprie ore e dei propri giorni. Ignorano, dunque, che qualcun altro possa decidere del loro tempo e decretarne addirittura la fine. Ignorano anche i tormenti di Matthew Diamond, il missionario bianco che ogni mattina rema fino all’isola per predicare e insegnare tutto lo scibile ai bambini. Fermamente convinto che ogni uomo è suo fratello, Matthew Diamond non può, tuttavia, fare a meno di provare un istintivo e viscerale senso di repulsione ogni volta che si trova, come afferma con candore in una lettera, «alla presenza di un negro».
