The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man

release date: Jul 25, 2023
The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man
NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • The raw, candid, unvarnished memoir of an American icon. The greatest movie star of the past 75 years covers everything: his traumatic childhood, his career, his drinking, his thoughts on Marlon Brando, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, John Huston, his greatest roles, acting, his intimate life with Joanne Woodward, his innermost fears and passions and joys. With thoughts/comments throughout from Joanne Woodward, George Roy Hill, Tom Cruise, Elia Kazan and many others. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: TIME and Vanity Fair "Newman at his best…with his self-aware persona, storied marriage and generous charitable activities…this rich book somehow imbues his characters’ pain and joy with fresh technicolor." —The Wall Street Journal In 1986, Paul Newman and his closest friend, screenwriter Stewart Stern, began an extraordinary project. Stuart was to compile an oral history, to have Newman’s family and friends and those who worked closely with him, talk about the actor’s life. And then Newman would work with Stewart and give his side of the story. The only stipulation was that anyone who spoke on the record had to be completely honest. That same stipulation applied to Newman himself. The project lasted five years. The result is an extraordinary memoir, culled from thousands of pages of transcripts. The book is insightful, revealing, surprising. Newman’s voice is powerful, sometimes funny, sometimes painful, always meeting that high standard of searing honesty. The additional voices—from childhood friends and Navy buddies, from family members and film and theater collaborators such as Tom Cruise, George Roy Hill, Martin Ritt, and John Huston—that run throughout add richness and color and context to the story Newman is telling. Newman’s often traumatic childhood is brilliantly detailed. He talks about his teenage insecurities, his early failures with women, his rise to stardom, his early rivals (Marlon Brando and James Dean), his first marriage, his drinking, his philanthropy, the death of his son Scott, his strong desire for his daughters to know and understand the truth about their father. Perhaps the most moving material in the book centers around his relationship with Joanne Woodward—their love for each other, his dependence on her, the way she shaped him intellectually, emotionally and sexually. The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man is revelatory and introspective, personal and analytical, loving and tender in some places, always complex and profound.

The large sums invested in pension schemes mean that such mistakes are often very costly indeed. This book provides a practical guide to the different methods available to correct commonly-occurring mistakes in the governing provisions of pension schemes. The Lost Queen
"Whosoever shall enter this space... thy double shall seek thee out." Hidden since antiquity, the tomb of the beautiful Lady of The Two Lands is awaiting rediscovery. The dark duality of Ancient Egypt draws in two modern-day twin brothers, Stuart and Harry Knowles. Physically alike but temperamentally different, one is a renowned Egyptologist, one a convicted felon. Their similarities cause both danger and confusion not only in their professional reputations but also in their love lives. Which woman most resembled the fabulous Lost Queen? Was it the cool mysterious Yasmin or the sparky hypnotic Delilah? The fate of the brothers is as much entwined with these two exotic ladies as it is to the golden Mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt. The shadowy underground tombs, where deadly archaic curses mix with twenty-first century skulduggery, reflect the sweet darkness of a cup of Egyptian coffee. "As sweet as love, as black as night and as hot as hell."

JUKE BOX BOOGIE Music Magazine

release date: Dec 04, 2017
JUKE BOX BOOGIE Music Magazine
Hello readers, and welcome to my new magazine. It's an exciting brand-new project that I hope you will enjoy. Writing about Rock'n'Roll through to Rockabilly and Country is not new to me however; my first article was an interview I did way back in 1996, later published in Crazy Bear magazine. From there I wrote for several others and finally ended up writing for the French magazine Rock & Roll Revue until it ceased operation. Instead of putting my pen and notebook back in the drawer, my partner Judith (Page) and I decided to create our own music journal. Our idea didn't stop at one magazine, but two versions; one in French and this one in English. The next thing I needed was a team - an Anglo-French one. For the French version I work with Eric Galland, and on the English side I work with Judith and Paul F Newman. My team have other lives; my partner Judith is an author of over a dozen books, and Paul is also a published author and an authority on cosmic astrology. This issue will include an interview with Freddie 'Boy' Burns, articles on singers: George Jones, Johnny Bond, Sheb Wooley, Kid Thomas and Eddie Noack. There's also a superb article on Mahalia Jackson by Judith, and another by Paul who will have his own unique page highlighting 'the story of a song'. It's an amazing experience having to write the majority of articles and editing a magazine in the two languages French and English. The common language in both is 'music', and inside these pages you can read about Country Music, Hillbilly, Blues, Country Boogie, Rock'n'Roll, and the joy of all...Rockabilly. The name for the magazine I've chosen is 'Juke Box Boogie', a tribute to my old friend Freddie Burns, who sadly died in 2015 at the age of 102. This first issue of Juke Box Boogie is dedicated to the late Bernard Boyat. We, the team salute you. You were a giant and the voice and life of Rock'n'Roll.

Lost Gods of Albion

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Lost Gods of Albion
A uniquely British phenomenon, the 30 or so figures cut into the turf of southern England have excited antiquarians, archaeologists, and the general public for generations. However, their origins are enigmatic. Paul Newman shows how hill-figures reveal Britain’s darkest past: Druid massacres, conjectured human sacrifice, and strange phallic and pagan rites that in milder form survive even today. In recent years much has changed in the world of hill-figure studies, most significantly perhaps the absolute dating by scientific means of early silts incorporated into the Uffington White Horse, which can now be seen to date from around 1000 BC. These and other discoveries and reinterpretations are among the many features which make this book essential reading for all those who have been captivated by the potent symbolism of chalk hill-figures.

Career Concerns and Mandated Disclosure

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Career Concerns and Mandated Disclosure
This paper examines the effects of mandated disclosure on the design of contracts and induced behavior in the presence of career concerns. We analyze the impact of two key properties of a mandated performance measure that is publicly disclosed: its sensitivity to the agent''s effort and its informativeness about the agent''s ability. We find that when the mandated measure is highly sensitive to the agent''s effort but the measure is relatively uninformative about the agent''s ability, the agent''s effort (and the firm''s output) will be higher and the pay-for-performance sensitivity will be lower relative to a scenario in which the measure is not mandated. In contrast, if the mandated measure''s informativeness dominates the measure''s sensitivity to effort, then effort is lower and the pay-for-performance sensitivity is higher in the mandated setting. We also characterize settings where a mandated disclosure would be desirable or not; variations arise because mandated disclosures can increase both effort and risk. Our results imply that mandating the public disclosure of performance measures, particularly measures that are relatively informative about ability but are difficult to influence through managerial effort, may have the unintended consequence of generating inefficiencies in firms'' employment contracts.

Newman's Own Cookbook

release date: Oct 15, 2008
Newman's Own Cookbook
For years, Paul Newman and his longtime buddy A. E. Hotchner filled old wine bottles with their homemade salad dressing to give to friends as Christmas gifts. Reasoning that what was good enough for their pals was good enough for the public, they formed Newman''s Own to sell the dressing. Their entrepreneurial adventure was a smashing success; to date, Newman''s Own products have generated more than $100 million in after-tax profits, all of which have been donated to charitable and educational causes. In that same generous spirit, Newman, Hotchner, their families, and friends now share more than 125 of their favorite recipes with you. From simple to sophisticated, these dishes are imaginative and delicious, and while some use Newman''s Own products, you can substitute your favorite brand of salsa, salad dressing, or spaghetti sauce without a problem. Some dishes are Newman household favorites, like The Newmanburger, Joanne''s Cereal, and Nell Newman''s Cauliflower and Parmesan Soup with Essence of Lemon. Some are contributions from friends, like Robert Redford''s Lamb Chili with Black Beans, Julia Roberts''s Fresh Peach Crisp, Matthew Broderick''s Grilled T-bone Steak with Sweet Onion Marmalade and Campfire Mustard Sauce, and Whoopi Goldberg''s Big Bad Ass Beef Ribs. There are winners from the Newman''s Own/Good Housekeeping recipe contest, Sundance''s Salsa Steak in a Sack, Towering Inferno Creole Posole, Paul''s Picture Show Popcorn Crunch, and Sockarooni Orange Kiss-Me Cake among them. Illustrated with wonderfully candid photographs and illuminated by Newman''s own trenchant observations, Newman''s Own Cookbook is a treat for the eye and the palate.

Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good

release date: Nov 04, 2003
Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good
“There are three rules for running a business; fortunately, we don’t know any of them.” In 1978, Paul Newman and A. E. Hotchner decided that rather than just distribute Paul’s own salad dressing at Christmas to neighbors, they would offer it to a few local stores. Freewheeling, irreverent entrepreneurs, they conceived of their venture as a great way to poke fun at the mundane method of traditional marketing. Much to their surprise, the dressing was enthusiastically received. What had started as a lark quickly escalated into a full-fledged business, the first company to place all-natural foods in supermarkets. From salad dressing to spaghetti sauce, to popcorn and lemonade, Newman’s Own became a major player in the food business. The company’s profits were originally donated to medical research, education, and the environment, and eventually went to the creation of the eight Hole in the Wall Gang camps for children with serious illnesses. In these pages Newman and Hotchner recount the picaresque saga of their own nonmanagement adventure. In alternating voices, playing off one another in classic “Odd Couple” style, they describe how they systematically disregarded the advice of experts and relied instead on instinct, imagination, and mostly luck. They write about how they hurdled obstacle after obstacle, share their hilarious misadventures, and reveal their offbeat solutions to conventional problems. Even their approach to charity is decidedly different: every year they give away all the company’s profits, empty the coffers, and start over again. The results of this amazing generosity are brought to life in heartwarming stories about the children at their camps. With rare glimpses into their zany style and their compassion for those less fortunate, Newman and Hotchner have written the perfect nonmanagement book, at once playful, informative, and inspirational.
