Genetic counseling is a process that incorporates education and counseling principles. The literature suggests that there are fewer well-established mechanisms to maintain counseling skills. We used a combination of qualitative methods---focus groups, telephone interviews, and email questionnaires---to ascertain genetic counselors'' views on professional development of psychosocial counseling skills. Specifically, we asked if supervision was considered a useful tool for continued postgraduate professional development of counseling skills by practicing genetic counselors. Data gathered during this study have been translated into supervision feasibility guidelines in an effort to promote the continued use of this practice for the improvement of professional skills.
