On English Poetry

On English Poetry
The greater part of this book will appear controversial, but any critic who expects me to argue on what I have written, is begged kindly to excuse me; my garrison is withdrawn without a shot fired and his artillery may blow the fortress to pieces at leisure. These notebook reflections are only offered as being based on the rules which regulate my own work at the moment, for many of which I claim no universal application and have promised no lasting regard. They have been suggested from time to time mostly by particular problems in the writing of my last two volumes of poetry. Hesitating to formulate at present a comprehensive water-tight philosophy of poetry, I have dispensed with a continuous argument, and so the sections either stand independently or are intended to get their force by suggestive neighbourliness rather than by logical catenation. The names of the glass houses in which my name as an authority on poetry lodges at present, are to be found on a back page. -- The Author

Good-bye to All that

Good-bye to All that
"The unsentimental and frequently comic treatment of the banalities and intensities of the life of a British army officer in the First World War gave Graves fame, notoriety and financial security, but the book's subject is also his family history, childhood, schooling and, immediately following the war, early married life; all phases bearing witness to the "particular mode of living and thinking" that constitute a poetic sensibility."--Wikipedia

The Feather Bed

release date: Nov 22, 2019
The Feather Bed
In "The Feather Bed," Robert Graves intricately weaves a tale steeped in the nuances of human emotion, vulnerability, and existential reflection. With a lyrical prose style that deftly balances modernist sensibilities with mythic undercurrents, Graves crafts a narrative that explores the intimate relations between lovers amidst the backdrop of post-war disillusionment. The text's rich symbolism and unconventional structure invite readers to unravel layers of meaning, presenting a poignant commentary on the fragility of human connections and the quest for identity in a rapidly changing world. Graves, an accomplished poet and novelist, draws upon his own experiences during World War I, which deeply informed his views on love and loss. His rich background in classical literature and mythological studies further enriches the thematic depth of "The Feather Bed." Graves's personal struggles and philosophical inquiries resonate throughout the novel, reflecting his belief in the essential human experience as a tapestry of desire, fear, and revelation. For readers seeking a profound exploration of love'Äôs complexities and the human condition, "The Feather Bed" offers an illuminating dive into Graves's literary genius. Embrace this evocative work to experience not just a story, but an inquiry into life itself, artfully rendered through the eyes of one of the 20th century'Äôs most significant literary figures.

Hebrew Myths

release date: Dec 01, 2004
Hebrew Myths
This exhaustive exploration of the Hebrew myths and the book of Genesis resulted from a remarkable collaboration between one scholar raised as a strict Protestant and one raised as a strict Jew. It goes beyond Christian biblical and Judaic myth and incorporates midrashes, folk tales, apocryphal texts, and other obscure sources to extend and complete the stories. An intriguing view of the suppressed and censored pre-biblical accounts is the result, along with a rich sense of a culture consisting of oral and literary traditions, where the spiritual is deeply rooted in landscape and history.
