This is the second of my planned trilogy about my experiences in social work in Edinburgh. Between 1989 and 1996 I was the last Manager of 'Thornybauk' This was a unique unit, opened in 1974, which offered a therapeutic living environment and individual and groupwork support for men and women with alcohol problems.

I began writing creatively in 1968, my last year at King's College, London, where I was studying Theology. Little survives from those early efforts. These stories- some serio-comic and others semi-autobiographical as well as the purely fictional- were conceived and written between 1970 (when I had given up teaching and was working as a postal clerk in London) and now, when I am retired after a career in social work in Edinburgh. The poems are mainly from the last several years. Previous works by the author include two novels -'Dream under the Hill' and 'A Canadian Childhood'.

"A Canadian Childhood" is the story of Robert Pace, one of three young boys, whose family came to Canada in 1946. Growing up in the Beaches area of Toronto, life is described through his eyes as he learns about his wider family roots; explores the Lake area and Taylor Creek ravine; day-dreams about ''The Fox'' cinema, Buck Rogers and Max Bentley; and starts his schooling. Unexpectedly the family return to England in 1953, disrupting his fragile sense of Canadian identity.
