Family history and genealogy of Ruth Martin (1873-1967), daughter of Gov. John Alexander Martin and Ida Challiss. She was born in Atchison, Kansas, where she also died. Her parents were born in Brownsville, Pa., and Moorestown, N.J. She was married to Paul Gerhardt Tonsing (1870-1936), son of Ernst Frederick Tonsing and Anna Maria Gertrude Walker, in 1893. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio of German parents. His father Ernst, a cabinet maker, landed in Baltimore on Oct. 15, 1845. His mother, Anna Maria Gertrude was of Brachhausen, Germany. Another early immigrant ancestor, Gebhard Harres (1801-1863), was born in Brunswich, Vallstadt, Germany, and died in Atchison, Kansas. Family members and descendants live in Kansas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and elsewhere.
