Family history and genealogy of Ruth Martin (1873-1967), daughter of Gov. John Alexander Martin and Ida Challiss. She was born in Atchison, Kansas, where she also died. Her parents were born in Brownsville, Pa., and Moorestown, N.J. She was married to Paul Gerhardt Tonsing (1870-1936), son of Ernst Frederick Tonsing and Anna Maria Gertrude Walker, in 1893. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio of German parents. His father Ernst, a cabinet maker, landed in Baltimore on Oct. 15, 1845. His mother, Anna Maria Gertrude was of Brachhausen, Germany. Another early immigrant ancestor, Gebhard Harres (1801-1863), was born in Brunswich, Vallstadt, Germany, and died in Atchison, Kansas. Family members and descendants live in Kansas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and elsewhere.

James T. Martin, Anson County, North Carolina
James T. Martin was born in 1818, in Anson County, North Carolina, the son of William H. and Temprance Parker Martin and grandson of Kinchen Martin, a Revolutionary War soldier. He married Ann Carpenter (1831-1910), daughter of William and Mary Allen Carpenter. They had fourteen children, 1848-1878. He served in supporting forces of the Confedracy during the Civil War. James T. and Ann Martin are buried in the Mount Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery, near Ansonville, North Carolina. Descendants lived in North Carolina and elsewhere.
