New Releases by Ruth Sawyer

This issue, we seem to have a wee bit of a sea theme. But there’s more than enough variety to go around, with original crime and mystery tales from Hal Charles, Neil S. Plakcy, Pam Barnsley—plus original science fiction and fantasy from Steven Mathes, Tim Fahlstedt, and Maureen Bowden. As to classics, we have a Sherlock Holmes parody from Maurice Baring and a rare Irish fantasy from Ruth Sawyer (who is a writer I’ve recently become interested in—she published a significant body of supernatural fiction, but in literary and mainstream publications). We also have classic novels from Victor L. Whitechurch and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (of Sherlock Holmes fame)—though this one is a science-fantasy tale of lost Atlantis! And here’s a giant salute to Ron Miller. This is his 75th issue as Art Director. He’s been either using his own artwork or that of his friend, the late Stephen Hickman (courtesy of Vicki Hickman), for covers since he took over. Hickman’s cover this issue is another great one. This Way to Christmas is a tale about a young boy David whose parents go on a trip and leave him in the care of an Irish couple, Joanna and Barney. In each chapter David listens to a new Christmas story or folk tale, learning more and more about the magic of Christmas, and its tradition and customs.

Ruth Sawyer (1880 - 1970) was an American storyteller and a writer of fiction and non-fiction for children and adults. She may be best known as the author of Roller Skates, which won the 1937 Newbery Medal. She received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 1965 for her lifetime achievement in children's literature. Sawyer's first book was an adult novel, The Primrose Ring. It appeared in 1915 and was made into a silent film in 1917, starring Mae Murray and an uncredited Loretta Young in her film debut as a fairy. The next year Sawyer published her first book for children, This Way to Christmas. The story is about a young boy--based on her son, David--whose parents go on a trip and leave him in the care of an Irish couple, Joanna and Barney.

An unashamed and quite delightful tale of 'Fancy and faeries', as the author terms it in her short foreword, where a magical bunch of primroses bought on May Eve brings the Little People into the life of the staff and children of a hospital, to benevolent effect. The buyer of the flowers is Margaret Maclean, nurse to the nine 'incurable' children of Ward C at Saint Margarets. She was once herself an 'incurable', before the old Senior Surgeon saved her against the odds. But the new Senior Surgeon and compassionless Trustees have some drastic plans for both 'Miss Peggie' and the inhabitants of Ward C - only they picked the wrong night to bring their plans into being. Despite the obvious pathos inherent in the characters and their situation, 'The Primrose Ring' keeps its good sense and doesn't succumb to sentiment or offer any false hopes with the way the story plays out. The children's night journey through the magical primrose ring to the Land of Tir-na-n'Og is particularly pleasing. A superior fairy story in the Celtic strain, for both children and adults. When he arrives with his favorite toy, a little red horse, he is rather afraid of the ocean, but after he had to rush in to save his toy, wading seemed easy. After wading up to his middle to collect shells, swimming was inevitable. Michael makes friends on the island and the red horse had the golden sea horse in Michael's aquarium for a friend. As he learned about shells, and swimming, and fishing, Michael also learned how to part with a thing you love and not to mind.
