Public Lands Grazing

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Public Lands Grazing
The monitoring of public lands is essential for sustaining livestock grazing and rangeland resources. In the Bighorn National Forest of Wyoming, the modified Robel Pole is used as a monitoring tool to measure residual herbaceous biomass after grazing. Initial standards were developed based on a single year of research and states that Visual Obstruction Readings (VOR) are correlated to biomass with an R2-value of 0.81; our research across three years resulted in R2-values of about half (ranging from 0.39 to 0.45) and our results differ significantly from the original paper two out of three years. In addition to VOR and biomass, slope, aspect, plant functional group cover and other variables were measured and included in AIC models to determine the top predictive model of residual biomass including VOR, slope, perennial forb cover and temperature. Including more variables increased the predictive power of our model compared to VOR only and helped explain problems with the current standard. In the Upper Green River Basin, Wyoming, differences in long-term monitoring techniques have made understanding environmental changes through time difficult. Using remotely-sensed data, obtained through Rangeland Analysis Platform, coupled with annual grazing and weather data, I assessed plant functional group trends and drivers. Perennial forb and grass cover, annual forb and grass cover, shrub cover, and total herbaceous biomass decreased and tree cover increased. With linear mixed models we compared weather and grazing data to understand which is driving trend. Weather was more important than grazing in driving land cover changes in this system.

Optically Transparent Antennas and Filters for Smart City Communication

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Optically Transparent Antennas and Filters for Smart City Communication
Incremental usage of mobile devices demand a new generation of wireless networks (5G) to provide faster data rates, more reliable coverage, monitor city infrastructure usage, and increase network capacity. The frequencies proposed for the upcoming 5G network would result in shorter broadcast distances and network dead zones, countered by incorporating transparent antennas into glass high rises. Transparent antennas possess, however a major challenge: low gain. This lower gain can be countered by means of employing antennas in an antenna array, boosting the gain and even giving the array the ability to beam form for the upcoming 5G network. The 5G dead zones can be countered with strategically placed transparent reflectors embedded into the glass surfaces of city high-rises. This dissertation shows there are significant effects due to the transparent antennas'' carrier concentration and film thickness. Changes in film conductivity and thicknesses results in shifts for filter and antenna resonances. A 4x1 GZO antenna array was constructed to operate at 5.8 GHz, and the results show approximately 10dBi of lower aperture gain between a copper version of the array and the GZO version of the array. However, the 4x1 GZO array shows an approximate 12dBi increase in gain over a single GZO antenna element. The technology developed in this dissertation has a broader impact other than for smart cities and the upcoming 5G network. Transparent antenna arrays offer sight insensitive military communication systems and eye-worn medical and commercial devices to monitor eye health and other various health signs.

Events and Periods as Concepts for Organizing Historical Knowledge

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Events and Periods as Concepts for Organizing Historical Knowledge
Events and periods are not objectively existing phenomena, but concepts we use to organize our knowledge of history. They make historical change comprehensible and help us orient ourselves with respect to the history of the culture in which we participate. Thus they are indispensable for describing both the content of history scholarship and the context of documents that serve as evidence for that scholarship. As historical discourse shifts its emphases and new aspects of the past come to be considered significant, periods and events are subject to constant change. Despite this change, we can model periods and events in systems of knowledge organization because it is possible to discern and formally describe relatively stable recurrent patterns in their narration.

The Judge as an Author/The Author as a Judge

release date: Jan 01, 2009
The Judge as an Author/The Author as a Judge
For Federal judges, a life-tenure also comes with a life-long publishing deal. While some judges remain faithful to the rigid framework of judicial opinion writing that dominates the shelves of law libraries throughout the country, others utilize certain cases to summon their inner novelist or poet to add life to the pages of the Federal Register. The use of humor, poetry, and popular culture in judicial opinions is not without its criticism. This paper is divided into two main topics; the first discusses the judge as an author. The section will begin with an examination of the audience of judicial opinions and an outline of the different styles of judicial opinion writing. The section will also examine the advantages and disadvantages of using literary tools to advance the law. The second section addresses the role of the artist as a judge. This section will study a small segment of judges who, in addition to the law, maintain an outside career as an author or artist. Judges who fit into this group include authors of books, operas, and magazine articles, and their opinions are often written in a manner which reflects their experience. This section will also discuss the advantages (and potential drawbacks) of having these unique judges deciding cases dealing with a wide range of author''s issues, including copyright and free speech, both substantively and stylistically.

Stories that Weave, Type that Zooms, Things that Fade Away
I do not deny that I am fascinated by type that zooms across the screen, animated characters, fast paced video games, mouse-overs that make objects dance, and images that appear and disappear. It is not just me. The allure and the appeal of the moving image is making the visual language of motion commonplace, whether on-line, in television advertisements, or in movie-title sequences. From this initial attraction, my work delves into two areas of personal interest. The first is story telling: what is the relationship between traditional narratives and the visual language of new media? The digital narratives are the manifestation of a working methodology that questions the result of combining labyrinthine structures, algorithmic controlled objects, video games, three-dimensional spaces, film, and motion for the sake of motion. The second is the transforming translation of the visual language of new media into printed formats. Motion and interactivity dramatically change the way narratives are communicated; multiplicity and malleability become fundamental elements of writing in an inherently static medium. Reading becomes necessarily both spatial and participatory.
