A Design of an Eco-friendly Diaper for Babies

release date: Jan 01, 2019
A Design of an Eco-friendly Diaper for Babies
For many generations, parents have used disposable diapers for their infants. These diapers have played a major key role on their health and well-being. As such, it is a necessity for both parties. It is the default choice of most, if not all, families and is important for their way of living. Unfortunately, most brands tend to sell diapers that can cause rashes to the baby and a huge financial burden to some families when it comes to the cost. Disposable diapers are usually expensive and not all family incomes can afford them. Which leads to some parents not changing their baby''s diapers frequently, which causes numerous health problems. In addition, parents dispose the fecal matter and urine of the baby in the trash that contaminates the groundwater and spread diseases. Furthermore, the materials that compose a diaper are a major environmental threat. Disposable diapers are the 3rd largest consumer item in landfills and represent 30% of non-biodegradable waste because they do not degrade well in landfills. As a solution to these problems, a redesign should be made. The product should be low cost that can be accessible to everyone. It must not be changed without disrupting the comfort of those who wear them. Moreover, it should be environmentally friendly to reduce the environmental drawbacks of disposable diapers. If a product can be low cost for consumers and that, at the same time, be able to help the environment, then it will reduce disposable diapers in landfills and will greatly help all family households afford a comfortable brand of a diaper.

Vernacular Revitalization in South Minneapolis

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Vernacular Revitalization in South Minneapolis
"Urban revitalization has often been associated with negative outcomes of minority displacement and gentrification. In an era of globalization, the need for planning approaches that encourage redevelopment without discounting the diverse local community is more pressing than ever. This case study of the redevelopment of Midtown Global Market in a low-income, multicultural neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota, finds that planning processes which encourage citizen participation in the highest form of collaboration and take advantage of endogenous community resources, specifically in terms of social capital and diversity, are effective for achieving vernacular revitalization--one that reflects and values the local context; local residents, thereby, are able to shape and adapt to the changing environment rather than be forced out. Additionally, findings suggest that place attachments a can significantly color the development environment with an air of benevolence as stakeholders rally together around a building that serves as a place of community identity and gathering"--Abstract.

Understanding how Harvest Influences the Life History and Demographics of Shovelnose Sturgeon in the Middle Mississippi River

release date: Jan 01, 2007
Understanding how Harvest Influences the Life History and Demographics of Shovelnose Sturgeon in the Middle Mississippi River
Shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus in the Middle Mississippi River is one of the last commercially viable sturgeon populations in the world. To determine whether commercial harvest of the black-egg (sexually mature) females is impacting this population, information regarding sex-specific demographics and the reproductive life history is required. Adult shovelnose sturgeon were sampled using gill nets (5-cm bar mesh) monthly during February 2005 through July 2006 at three sites on the Middle Mississippi River between Cairo, IL and St. Louis, MO; (RKM: 201-198; 191-188, and RKM 127-124). Of all shovelnose sturgeon sampled, 363 were females and 416 were males, deviating from 1:1 (p=0.06). Sex-specific length frequency distributions differed (p=0.03) with females having a larger median fork length (614 mm). Compared to historical data, the population shifted towards longer fish, and somatic growth declined. The population also shifted towards older fish with reduced recruitment. Age at maturity was later than previously reported, with females maturing at a mean age of 10.5 years and males at 9 years of age. Total egg count was slightly lower than previously reported with a mean of 29,573/female. However, the spawning cycle had not changed with most males and females spawning every 2 and 3 years, respectively. Larval sturgeon were also sampled to link age at maturation, timing and periodicity of spawning, and larval growth rates. Larval sturgeon occurred during June and July of 2005 and May and June of 2006, confirming successful spawning. Larval sturgeon grew between 0.69 to 1.69 mm total length per day among four distinct cohorts produced each year. For the first time for this population, sturgeon were found to spawn during the fall. Fall sturgeon contained ripe eggs with polarization indexes (PIs)
