Sacred Magic Core Training

release date: Sep 07, 2023
Sacred Magic Core Training
Inherited from the ancient shaman and inspired by the natural energy of the universe, WICCA is the path to natural magic. Inheriting the ancient system of Wicca, and free from the strict confines of religion, Cunningham wrote this classic of magical rituals in 1989. Published over 30 years ago, it is still a favorite among readers of all generations and continues to sell well. It opens up the connection between man and nature and creates the harmonious movement of energy that individuals need in their lives. It is a Wickham book tailor-made for "solo practitioners" and is also recognized as a must-read reference book for entering the magical world. Without the need for initiation, without following any traditional rules, you can use this book to practice magic independently, create your own rituals and spells, and write your own "Book of Shadows".

Causal Inference

release date: Jan 26, 2021
Causal Inference
An accessible, contemporary introduction to the methods for determining cause and effect in the Social Sciences “Causation versus correlation has been the basis of arguments—economic and otherwise—since the beginning of time. Causal Inference: The Mixtape uses legit real-world examples that I found genuinely thought-provoking. It’s rare that a book prompts readers to expand their outlook; this one did for me.”—Marvin Young (Young MC) Causal inference encompasses the tools that allow social scientists to determine what causes what. In a messy world, causal inference is what helps establish the causes and effects of the actions being studied—for example, the impact (or lack thereof) of increases in the minimum wage on employment, the effects of early childhood education on incarceration later in life, or the influence on economic growth of introducing malaria nets in developing regions. Scott Cunningham introduces students and practitioners to the methods necessary to arrive at meaningful answers to the questions of causation, using a range of modeling techniques and coding instructions for both the R and the Stata programming languages.

The Long-Term Effects of the Rwandan Genocide on Child Work

release date: Jan 01, 2019
The Long-Term Effects of the Rwandan Genocide on Child Work
We estimate the long-term effect of the Rwandan genocide on the work of the children born after the genocide, using variation in genocide intensity across communes and child work incidence in the 2010 Demographic Health Survey. We instrument for the number of killings at the commune with its distance to the Ugandan border. We find evidence for a lingering effect of genocide. The genocide causes an increase in work and a decrease in school attendance of the children born after the genocide. Doubling the number of killings per capita increases the probability of a child working for someone who is not a household member by 3.35 percentage points, while decreasing the probability of a child attending school by 3.68 percentage points. Our empirical results suggest a long-term impact of the genocide on human capital development that is likely to contribute to Rwanda''s underdevelopment in the future.

Ya Te Veo

release date: Mar 01, 2018
Ya Te Veo
Finalist, 2018 Miller Williams Poetry Prize Ya Te Veo takes as its title the name of a mythical tree that eats people. Like the branches of that tree, the poems in this book seem to capture and nourish themselves on a diverse cast of would-be passers-by, drawing their life-force from the resulting synthesis of characters. Among the seized are poets and painters alongside musicians from Garth Brooks to Wu-Tang Clan to the composer Morton Feldman, whose mysterious personality serves as a backdrop in many poems for meditations on intimacy, ethics, and anxiety. As the phrase “ya te veo” (“I see you”) implies, this is a book interested in revealing what we think is hidden, in questioning the gap inside all of us, a gap between what we feel and what we say and do, making space for our many contradictions. Like the works of Feldman, these poems focus and recede, experimenting with form in order to accomplish a state of deep concentration. They impersonate sonnets, ghazals, terza rima, monologues, translations, and freestyles, but inexactly, embracing failed imitation as an opportunity to remix the familiar.

How Far Is Too Far?

release date: Jan 01, 2017
How Far Is Too Far?
We estimate the effect of Texas HB2, a TRAP law that shuttered nearly half of Texas'' abortion clinics in late 2013. After demonstrating that pre-existing trends in abortion rates were unrelated to the changes in access caused by HB2, we implement a difference-in-difference research design to identify the effects of abortion access. Our results suggest a substantial and non-linear effect of distance to abortion services. As the distance to the nearest abortion provider increases from less than 25 miles to 25-50 miles, there is little change in rates of legally induced abortions. But an increase to 50-100 miles reduces legal abortion rates by 16 percent, an increase to 100-200 miles reduces abortion rates by 32 percent, and an increase to 200 or more miles reduces abortion rates by 47 percent. We also introduce a proxy for congestion that predicts additional reductions in abortion rates as fewer clinics serve more women.

Last Night I Dreamt I Was a DJ

release date: Nov 20, 2014
Last Night I Dreamt I Was a DJ
Miami, FL''s Jai-Alai Books proudly presents, Last Night I Dreamt I Was a DJ (2014), Frank Bez''s debut volume of poetry in English, translated by P. Scott Cunningham and Hoyt Rogers. A former resident of Chicago, Bez''s poetry highlights the deep connections between the United States and the Dominican Republic. He celebrates the lyrical possibilities of Santo Domingo, while also lamenting its systemic failures. He delights in the cultural influence of the United States, while also recognizing the failed exportation of the American dream. Most of all, though, Bez''s poems are funny. They laugh at the spectacle of their creator and his struggle to exist as a poet in world hostile to poetry, and they dare to talk back to capitalism with the voices of the voiceless: the poor, working class people haunting the streets of Santo Domingo "like a new Night of the Living Dead sequel."

SHOULD U.S. COMICS BE BANNED? "SATANIC" HARRY POTTER BOOKS BURNT PLAYGROUNDS POSE THREAT TO CHILDREN TEXT-MAD YOUTH LOSING WRITING ABILITIES CHILD SUSPENDED FOR BRANDISHING CHICKEN SOCIAL WEBSITES HARM CHILDREN''S BRAINS STUDENT ARRESTED FOR "PASSING GAS" AT SCHOOL These are all real headlines screaming about the terrible stuff that''s out there . . . stuff that''s supposed to be BAD FOR YOU. But, honestly—is it?! Bad for You asks this question and many more—and not just about the things that modern parents fear like violent video games, social media, and dirty hands. Stuff in this book goes back centuries—all the way to Plato (yeah, that one) and his worries over the new "technology" of his time: the written word! Kevin C. Pyle and Scott Cunningham cleverly expose the long-standing CAMPAIGN AGAINST FUN for what it really is: a bunch of anxious adults grasping at straws, ignoring scientific data, and blindly yearning for the good old days that never were. Bad for You presents the facts, figures, and a whole lot more—in eye-grabbing graphics—to debunk these myths and give kids the power to prove there''s nothing wrong with having fun . . . or with being young.

Parental Substance Use and Foster Care

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Parental Substance Use and Foster Care
Foster care caseloads have nearly doubled over the last three decades. Parental methamphetamine (meth) use grew significantly during the same period. While child welfare workers and law enforcement claim that parental meth use contributes to foster care growth, the evidence for a causal effect has not been determined. This paper presents the first evidence of a causal effect of meth on foster care admissions using two exogenous supply-side interventions in meth markets from the late 1990s for identification. First, we find that restrictions on meth precursor distribution caused meth use (proxied by white meth self-referred treatment cases) to decline 4.1%. Second, using two-stage least squares, we estimate a positive elasticity of foster care cases with respect to meth use of 1.54. We also estimate elasticities of 1.03 and 1.49 for cases of child neglect and parental abuse, respectively. These results suggest that child welfare policies should be designed specifically for the children of meth-using parents.
