Viktor e Liesel Landauer sono una giovane coppia di sposi in viaggio di nozze. Sono a bordo di una Landauer 80 cabriolet, una macchina dell’azienda di famiglia di Viktor, un vero e proprio impero industriale che produce automobili e motociclette. Viktor è di religione ebraica, ma non praticante. Liesel appartiene a una famiglia dell’alta borghesia tedesca. Nella casa dei suoi genitori gli ospiti possono ammirare, tra le numerose opere d’arte esposte, un ritratto della madre realizzato da Klimt. Dopo aver attraversato la Carinzia, i Landauer si dirigono a Venezia, dove soggiornano al Royal Danieli. In occasione di una festa in un antico palazzo sul Canal Grande, incontrano Rainer Von Abt, celebre architetto dai modi eleganti. Von Abt è galante con Liesel, giovane donna attraente e sofisticata e loquace con Viktor, con cui si impegna in appassionate conversazioni sull’architettura moderna. Zatím poslední autorovo prozaické dílo, Skleněný pokoj (The Glass Room), se v roce 2009 dostalo do užšího výběru knih nominovaných na prestižní Man Bookerovu cenu a zaslouženě sklidilo u nás nebývalý úspěch. Také román Mendelův trpaslík (Mendel''s Dwarf) patří mezi nejúspěšnější Mawerovy knihy. List New York Times ho zařadil mezi nejpozoruhodnější díla vydaná v roce 1997, zájem o něj projevili také filmaři (práva ke zfilmování drží Barbra Streisand). Líčí příběh vědce, který zasvětil svůj život studování genetické poruchy, jež těžce poznamenala jeho samotného. Benedict Lambert je nejen trpaslík, ale také vzdálený příbuzný slavného genetika Gregora Mendela, v románu se tedy – podobně jako v již zmíněném Skleněném pokoji – objevuje i řada českých, respektive moravských reálií. O autorovi Simon Mawer (1948) je úspěšný britský autor, který si navzdory tomu, že svou prvotinu vydal poněkud neobvykle až na prahu čtyřicítky, již získal svými romány popularitu mezi čtenáři i přízeň literární kritiky jak v Evropě, tak v Americe. Po studiích zoologie na Oxfordu se několik let živil jako učitel biologie v Anglii, na Kypru a na Maltě. Pozornost literárního světa upoutal už svým prvním románem Chimera (Chiméra), který vyšel v roce 1989 a získal McKitterickovu cenu udělovanou nejlepším románovým debutům vydaným ve Velké Británii. Očekávání, která úspěch prvotiny vyvolal, bezpochyby naplnil jeho dosud nejúspěšnější román Mendel ́s Dwarf (Mendelův trpaslík). Sklěněný pokoj byl přeložen do češtiny v roce 2009 a sklidl velký úspěch u českých čtenářů.
