Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has become an epidemic in the college-age population with young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 be ing the highest risk group for the behavior. Many college counseling center directors report that treatment with individuals who engage in NSSI is often not successful. A major hindrance in the treatment of NSSI is a lack of motivation in the individual to give up the behavior and, within the college setting, there is the further complication of the short-term model of therapy employed by many college counseling centers nationwide. A form of treatment is needed that could help build an individuals motivation to change self-injuring behavior within a time-limited framework. Motivational interviewing (MI) is one such treatment that shows potential as an appropriate addition to current treatment to enhance efficacy or build basic motivation for change. This critical review of the literature synthesizes, critiques, and analyzes the research literature related to training clinicians generally and training clinicians in MI in order to determine how college counselors can best be trained in MI to address the problem of NSSI.

Lacan's psychoanalytic take on what makes a pervert perverse is not the fact of habitually engaging in specific "abnormal" or transgressive sexual acts, but of occupying a particular structural position in relation to the Other. Perversion is one of Lacan's three main ontological diagnostic structures, structures that indicate fundamentally different ways of solving the problems of alienation, separation from the primary caregiver, and castration, or having limits set by the law on one's jouissance. The perverse subject has undergone alienation but disavowed castration, suffering from excessive jouissance and a core belief that the law and social norms are fraudulent at worst and weak at best.
