The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) has a pronounced seasonal cycle, drifting from the Southern Hemisphere in boreal winter to the Northern Hemisphere in boreal summer, with a maximum intensity during boreal winter in the Southern Hemisphere. The reason for this maximum intensity during boreal winter is not fully understood. In this study we perturbed the seasonal cycle in the Superparameterized Community Atmosphere Model, which reasonably represents the MJO, by changing Earth''s orbital parameters. In response to the orbital forcing, boreal winter mean precipitation increases, consistent with a stronger Hadley circulation, and the mean lower-tropospheric westerly winds shift southward over the Indo-Pacific warm pool. The increase in the tropical precipitation variance are explained using the linearized approximation of the non-linear moisture-precipitation relationship. The increase in the tropical precipitation variance is mostly due to a decrease in the convective moisture adjustment timescale, which is mainly due to the increase in mean precipitation. The seasonal cycle of the MJO is amplified, with the largest increases in the MJO''s precipitation variance occuring during boreal winter. The changes in the convective moisture adjustment timescale and MJO scale moisture predict a larger increase in the MJO precipitation variance than in the tropical precipitation variance. Additionally, a weaker damping effect from the latent heat flux is found due to the southward shift in the mean lower tropospheric westerlies.

This study aimed to examine who participates in extreme obstacle courses (EOCs) and why. Drawing from the Big Five theory of personality, and the self-determination theory of motivation, this study examined the interaction of individual difference variables (IDVs) and motivation in a sample of 79 people interested in running extreme obstacle courses. Specifically, demographics, extraversion, openness to experience, general self-efficacy, and physical self efficacy were examined regarding how they relate to the number of EOCs participants run, and whether they run for intrinsically motivated reasons. Findings suggest that most participants were male, European-American and of high SES. The majority reported being intrinsically motivated (with "fun" being the most frequently endorsed reason for being interested in or having participated in EOCs). Extraversion was significantly positively correlated with intrinsic motivation, and significantly negatively correlated with the combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and physical self-efficacy was marginally related to the number of EOCs participants run. No interactions between personality variables and motivations were found to affect number of EOCs ran. Interpretations of these and other findings, as well as study limitations, are discussed.

It is used in many settings (e.g., outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment, schools, juvenile justice, and private practice).Voices is based on the realities of girls'' lives and the principles of gender responsivity; it is also grounded in theory, research, and clinical experience. The Voices curriculum advocates a strength-based approach and uses a variety of therapeutic approaches, including psychoeducational, cognitive-behavioural, and expressive arts.
